The MMOG Overload of 2009

No one can say for sure exactly how many massive role-playing games will see release in the next year, though the amount of which is sure to be staggering.

Once upon a time there was a genre of videogames known as massively multiplayer online role-playing games. Each one contained fantastic new worlds to explore, amazing creatures to meet and blunt instruments of death in which to interact with them. The MMOG's, as they are called, saw release perhaps only once or twice a year, the populations of which would shift and fluctuate with each new world as the virtual tourists would seek newer and greater nesting grounds.

Then Blizzard released IGN Vault [http://worldofwarcraft.com] has put together a massive list of some of the MMOG titles that may see release in 2009 and the scary thing is, it may not even be complete, though there's enough vaporware (Huxley, The Agency) to keep it from being too frightening. The list itself is worth a gander should be you be jonesing for a new addiction, though here are the ones I feel may be worth your attention.

make you forget [http://www.aiononline.com/us/] everything terrible about Korean-made MMOG games. Create a porcelain god, earn your wings and PvP your heart out in this fantasy epic.

Champions Online [http://www.champions-online.com/] (Cryptic) - From the developer that brought you City of Heroes ... another superhero MMOG! Cryptic looks to be trying to accomplish everything they couldn't with its original capes-and-tights online game, only this time its not just for PC, but Xbox 360 as well.

LEGO Universe [www.legouniverse.com] (NetDevil) - No one is quite sure what to make of the upcoming Lego MMOG, but playing virtual LEGO with hundreds or thousands of other people sounds like a compelling enough experiment.

Star Wars: The Old Republic [http://www.swtor.com/] (Bioware) - It's (possibly) got microtransactions and developed by the kings of western role-playing games. Bioware has a lot to prove and a backlash at hand with this one, but if anyone can squeak out a win, it would be them.

freak out [http://www.startrekonline.com/] and do your best Jean-Luc impression and more in what could end up being a nerd paradise.

How about yourself? Do any of the upcoming MMOG's interest you enough to pull yourself away from your current addiction?

I should point out that this is not confirmed yet. A representative from EA stated that the microtransaction talk was a misunderstanding.

Hoooo, crap. Why would I ever write that this game is free? Sorry, major brain fart there ... especially since I don't remember doing it!

Thanks for the catch.

Probably Blade and Soul. Just because Western MMO's don't exactly fly here. Blame it on Ragnarok Online.

I wish that I had more time on my hands to play games. It's gotten so that I can't play MMO's anymore. I really want to see how Star Wars: The Old Republic turns out though.

Most of these sound rather stupid, and I will definitely not play them in 2009 anyway.
I've learned my lesson on MMO's and launches.

I'd like to see how the whole Stargate MMO would pan out as well, but I doubt we'll see that this year, if we'll see it at all.

There's way too many of these MMOs now, and franchises I enjoy seem to now be focused on some crappy, social networking site of a game.

I'd much rather get my hands on a new KotOR single player game.

Methinks you're misunderstanding the definition of "Vaporware."

If Star Trek Online can make good on the promise of its namesake's exploratory mindset, I might actually be willing to pay for it. I still play Guild Wars on occasion, but that was a one-time purchase rather than a continuing expense.

Huxley looked pretty interesting. I don't recall any other game that's really put an emphasis on a first person shooter mmo. I might try that out at some point when more details are released

Maybe it doesn't really qualify as an MMOG (since I think he only plans on supporting a few hundred people per server) but Love [http://gamevideos.1up.com/video/id/22185] is probably my most anticipated MMOG.

I have no interest in these other games that rehash the same old formulas.

Out of the ones listed above I guess the Lego one sounds the most interesting since I imagine it allows you to build stuff. Hopefully it doesn't have any "I need 100 red blocks to finish my house!" NPC quests.

There's also the Shin Megami Tensei MMO: Imagine Online. It went to open beta fairly recently so I'd wager it'll be finished soon. I would have gone with that as my top choice until a few months ago, but having played the closed beta, I'm glad to say there's no way in Hell I'm getting addicted to that one. My social life is rejoicing right now. The graphics are surprisingly bland, the grind is as plentiful as it is painful, the story is laughable if you can even consider it a story, and the interface is about as easy to get accustomed to as herding a pack of feral cats.

The Star Trek and Star Wars ones still have me intrigued, but they're still in relatively early development. I don't really expect either to be out this year and I'll be reserving my excitement until I can see some gameplay footage.

I was thinking 'shuvvelware' for some reason... But my point still stands.
The startrek mmo is definately vaporware!
How many times has it been 'remade' in the past year? ;)
Its kinda like Duke Nukem: Forever...
