Sonic Gets Another Shot on TV in Sonic Boom Cartoon Next Year

Sonic and friends get the CGi treatment in Sonic Boom.

Sonic the Hedgehog is coming back to TV, folks. Sega announced that their most popular character will star in a new CG-animated series, Sonic Boom next fall. Co-producers SEGA of America and Genao Productions will produce 52 eleven-minute episodes for the series initial run, which will air on Cartoon Network in the US, as well as Canal J and Gulli in France.

Believe it or not, Boom will be Sonic's fifth TV series in the last twenty years.

Described as a "character-driven comedy," Sonic Boom will follow the exploits of Sonic, Tails, Knuckles and Amy, as they "search for adventure" and square off against Dr. Eggman and other villains.

"Sonic is the star of the SEGA universe and the stage is now set for him to shine like never before. By teaming up with world-class partners in television animation like Cartoon Network, Genao Productions and GULLI, we're ensuring that the Sonic legacy will be introduced to a new generation of children across the globe," said Sonic Chief Content Officer Hiroyuki Miyazaki.

That shadow of Knuckles suggests that he's going to be a lot more imposing than he has been in the past. Kind of... odd. But hey, I'll give it a shot.

I was about to be all "OH GOD WHAT HAVE THEY DONE TO KNUCKLES", but looking at it, I think the redesign might be kinda cool. I mean, it did always seem a bit strange that this massive powerhouse had arms the same width as everyone else.
Still, my opinion doesn't really matter because I doubt I'm going to watch it. Unless everyone who watches it tells me it's really, really good.

Personally I dread the fact Amy is in it more than whatever redesign they are doing to Knuckles.

... wait what?
Of all the things I was expecting to hear about Sonic stuff. Another cartoon, was not on my thought process. It looks as though they really want to try and redesign them a bit too. Even sonic's iconic silhouette has a few extra stray quills. And Knuckles... damn. He's been lifting. Looks though to be American made, or at least Canadian, if it's airing on Cartoon Network.

I'm not sure what I can say, I will probably try to watch it, but I honestly didn't like Sonic X. The production values on that show were really crap. A CGI cartoon series... I dont' know, I'm feeling trepidation.

Let's not jump to any conclusions here. There's no such things as bad characters...only bad ways in which they are written. If Amy is depicted as someone OTHER than a fangirl more obsessed than Kathy Bates' character in "Misery", this could be a step in the right direction.

CAPTCHA: HEARTACHE

You're not helping, Captcha.

Actually...the only way this new cartoon will succeed is if Sega agrees NOT to weigh in on the writing. The Archie comic is kind of struggling right now despite the hiring of Ian Flynn (who proved his worth to fans with his "Sonic - Other M" fancomic) because Sega is paranoid about their precious IP and can't keep their grubby paws off of the writing, which is supposed to be Ian's job but Sega won't let him. As a colleague of mine said: "Sega can't write their way out of a wet paper bag with an acid tipped titanium stylus."

Knuckles better have the Yugioh voice (Dan Green) and for some reason explain why he's buff as shit.

And Amy better die, somehow. I don't care how comedic, no-one likes Amy.

Only 11 minute episodes? How much adventure are they going to get in in 11 minutes?
I suppose the same way Adventure time and Regular show do. Give it a simple plot that can be wrapped up in 11 minutes, maybe extend it to a full half hour if it's something significant. It'll mostly be reduced to silly antics and mayhem.

Oh dear...

I'm not hyped for this. Brings back memories of that lame sonic cartoon where everything was ridiculous to the point of it being stupid.

Well, let's hope it works out I guess.

Yeah, I've heard of shows with only 15 minute runtimes, but I would think Sonic would require at least 25 minutes which his previous cartoons got. With only 11 minutes there's not going to be much substance to this.

Does nobody in any industry have any pattern recognition skills?
And why can't they just call him Robotnik again? To make it more in line with the Japanese version? Just have the Japanese version also call him Robotnik. Problem solved.

Wonder if they are going to bring Jaleel White to voice Sonic...

Not so sure about the series, to be honest.
