Call of Duty: Ghosts Made $1 Billion in One Day

Every year somebody says; "there's no way this game will do as well the last one." And every year they're wrong.

The fix is in: Call of Duty: Ghosts global sales topped $1 billion dollars on day one, according to publisher Activision. Though the publisher is quick to boast about the figure, they have not yet released specific sales figures, including the number of units shipped or sold. Activision was also quick to point out that Ghosts is currently the number one game on Xbox Live and the most pre-ordered game at GameStop, which held 15,000 midnight openings Tuesday morning.

"This is the must have launch title for the next generation of consoles," says Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg, "and we expect Call of Duty: Ghosts to be the most successful launch title for the Xbox One and PS4 by a wide margin. In fact, according to GameStop, Call of Duty: Ghosts is their most pre-reserved next gen title."

Call of Duty: Ghosts is currently available on Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U and PC. The game will launch alongside both the PS4 and Xbox One. Despite some single-player struggles, we found that Ghosts has plenty to offer: Check out our review [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/reviews/10713-Call-of-Duty-Ghosts-Review-Dogs-of-War?utm_source=reviews&utm_medium=index_carousel&utm_campaign=all] for the full report.

Correction: Activision's statement refers to retailer to "sell-in" sales from publisher to retail, not generated at retail. As such, it has not actually broken any sales records.

You know, if some of that CoD money is going towards funding smaller, riskier projects...then I can deal with it. Nobody's forcing me to play it after all (the last one I bought was MW2 for $10). And it means that there's a lot of happy people playing the game and getting paid for making it.

Out of curiosity, if JUST the campaigns were bundled onto a disc (something like "The Modern Warfare Campaign Trilogy"), how many would be interested in grabbing that thing?

If you read the first paragraph of the article you sourced, they are bragging about selling $1 Billion in copies to retailers. This doesn't mean that it sold $1 billion to customers on day 1.

GTA's records are safe for now.

Well, color me impressed: Here I was thinking that CoD: Ghosts would sell less then Black Ops II. I admit I was wrong, and Congratulate Activision on their success.

I'm glad you pointed that out, now I don't have to. I'd be surprised if it actually did even as well as GTA V, and even then when you consider the PC version of GTA V still isn't out yet vs Ghosts multiplatform launch I imagine Rockstar can expect more sales in the future.

Yes and apparently it also (possibly) includes the PS4/XBone copies as well; if so they're counting figures for games that aren't available to the consumer yet.

Maybe they should spend some of their funds on creating games that don't look about 6 years old on 'next-gen' systems, hire some decent animators and get some actual writers on board, as opposed to whatever tree-branch swinging creatures they currently have.

Also: "Johnson! I want those keyframes copy and pasted by 9am tomorrow morning!"

There's re-using assets, and then there's just laziness on something that should be unique.

That's something that a lot of game developers are guilty of. It's simply a means to save time and money (although I suppose money hasn't been an issue with Call of Duty development since CoD4).

OT: Congrats I suppose. I generally like the single player in the CoD games (at least the Infinity Ward ones, but I do admit I love Call of Duty 2: Big Red One and the Russian campaign in World at War), and regardless if they did sell a billion dollars worth of games or not, you know they made a shitton of money.

Whatever. It's a game for the PS3, Xbox 360, PC, Wii U, PS4 and Xbone. On top of that they're selling a version that costs $120. Of course it made a billion dollars.

Come back when it's the actual sales numbers and not how much retailers have bought (a lot of which aren't even available for purchase yet).

They never bragged about 'sell in' sales with the previous titles... It's almost as if they want you to think COD is more successful than another series that shattered their records...

I definitely would. When Steam had the last few BLOPS 2 weekends with Multiplayer only, I think I clocked less than 6 hours over all 3 or 4 times its been done. It's really only the campaigns that interest me.

Those animators and minds are where they should be, at Respawn working for EA of all people after Activision tried to back stab them all. Infinity Ward's days of being the 'good' Call ofDuty developer are over, it's Treyarch games that are exciting(ish) now and it's entirely the fault of Bobby Kotick and friends.

After that situation played out hiring new talent to work at IW must be all but impossible, which is showing with Ghosts.

Actually COD has always prided itself on having rather tame ( i believe the largest was 60 million) budgets and selling far more than those 200 million budget titles.

Yeah, cause they've handed out the copies for the PS4 and Xbone as well. A bunch of people at my work now have Call of Duty: Ghosts for PS4, but can't do anything with it but lovingly stroke the box. So technically they cheated just to beat Grand Theft Auto V.
