Sony's Yoshida: MP3s Will Be PS4 Playable, Just Not Right Now

Games are more important at launch, says Yoshida; we didn't really think music was that high a priority.

"It's amazing how fast I get to know things, the worst things that's happening about PlayStation in the world," laughs Shuhei Yoshida, but he doesn't regret becoming Sony's public face, even though it means that every day, each morning, he's the one who gets the bad news first. One thing that did catch him, and Sony, by surprise was the reaction to the PS4 FAQ, specifically the bit where Sony admitted it wasn't going to support audio CDs, nor would users be able to play MP3s.

"I think the technology has shifted," says he, "and we're putting more and more emphasis on the software." Including, some grumbled, Music Unlimited, the PS4's cloud music subscription service that seemed to be Sony's preferred means of getting tunes to the populace. Since the announcement, Sony's been "tweaking" its priority task list for the PS4 after launch, Yoshida admits, partly in response to the outburst.

"The biggest surprise for us all," Yoshida says, "is how passionately people reacted to our announcement [http://blog.us.playstation.com/2013/10/30/ps4-the-ultimate-faq-north-america/]." The point was to let people know what features would be available at day one, and it wasn't Sony's intention to somehow trick people into using Music Unlimited by removing all other options. It's just that game features take precedence, at least as far as the first few weeks and months are concerned. Music was pretty low on Sony's list of priorities, given the other things it had to worry about, which was why the music controversy caught it on the hop.

"We're going to do it eventually," says Yoshida. It's just not a priority now, and the sudden outcry caught Sony off guard. "The systems guys are discussing how and when we're going to put these features on."

It makes sense, really. When the PS3 launched it could do everything BUT play games (it had none). This time around they're trying to fix that, but they've over-prioritized many things over those extras and miscommunicated "not now/yet" as "never."

There was an interview with Mark Cerny the other day where the interviewer kept asking him why they made the PS4 a 'games only' console and Cerny had to repeatedly correct him, "It does a lot more, but we're just pushing it as a games console because that's what people wanted."

Even if the foil hats say it's a secret 180 policy reversal, they're at least stating they'll deliver.

Yeah. Because downloading and compiling 'ffmpeg' or 'libmp3lame' or even 'libvorbis' was just too much damned trouble...

There's 2, maybe 3 dozen games coming out for the PS4 (even fewer when you take out the ones that have been delayed), I'd say it still doesn't have any games. Plus no games from previous gens plus almost none of the features from the previous console.

I'm glad mp3's will eventually be playable but this should have been present at launch, when the console's game library would be at its smallest. I suspect after Sony lost most their market this gen by releasing their console well after Microsoft they decided it would be better to just release a new consoles before it was actually ready.

Is this really anything to cry about? Who cares if it plays music or not, I just want to play games on the damn thing. I mean that's what it's meant to do, right?

What makes me laugh here is that looking back Xbox One got a lot of hate because Microsoft marketed it as a media device rather than a gaming console. Now PS4 is focusing on games leaving media features for later... the result is the same.

We don't want a media device, we want a gaming console that function as a media device apparently. I'm growing tired of this.

For MP3 support they need to get a license for it though, is not simples as just compiling.

No, we just don't know what we want...

No, what the big uproar was over was partly because Microsoft focused so heavily on non-game media. For example, at the reveal for the machine, they announced that Halo, formerly mainly a game series, would now have a spin-off TV series. While great for some (not me, I've only ever played the first Halo)...the reveal was supposed to be about the CONSOLE. The TV series is a piece of media that can be played on anything.
Also, the non-ability to play MP3's and CD's is seen as a removal of features that users have to come to expect as standard in their consoles. All Playstations, 1, 2 and 3, have been able to play CD's. While yes, CD's are (slowly) dying off, they are still around. The PS3 was able to play MP3s (can someone tell me if the PS2 was able to play MP3s on a data CD/DVD?). A device that is able to show you video and sound in one form or another (DVD player, CD player, Blu-ray player, portable music player, games console), they are all expected at the very least to play MP3s, because they are the de facto standard for music files. Last I checked, they were still around and still extremely popular. If MP3 was a dying standard that very few people used, I'd understand Sony's decision then, but since it's not...

As I said, I've grown tired of this. If no-one was mad because the Xbox One was marketed as a media device then let's leave it at that. If it's unforgivable that a gaming system can't play mp3 files then let's leave it at that. This is a pointless discussion and I'm not going to spend time or energy arguing it. I don't care either way. My TV can play all the mp3 and video files I want and it's not even a good TV.

Well brilliant works guys. Maybe if you hadn't treated the PS4 features like the secret formula to Coke A Cola you could have gotten proper feedback in time to add the features your customers wanted at launch. Now you nitwits have to spend extra money and time scrabbling around in a panic to fix issues that should never have happened in the first place.

Actually, I'm with Sony on this one.

I haven't put a CD into one of my consoles since Monster Rancher on the PSOne - and even then, it obviously wasn't about the music. Now, the MP3s I can sort of, kind of, get... I guess... I mean, I don't really use that functionality and neither do any of my close acquaintances who own a console - but hey, what do I know!

Somebody must be using it, right?

Why else would there be such an "outcry"?

I mean, it's not like this outburst was generated by just a handful of crybabies with too much time on their hands, right?

...

Yeah, screw that, I'm with the guy who says that game features take precedence.

Never really had a problem with the whole, "doesn't play music" thing. The only reason I'd play music through my TV is if I'm having a party. If I'm having a party, I'm not going to rely on on TV speakers and a shitty UI to do the work. I'll use the excellent interface (list-building, smart shuffle, streaming content, etc.) that I get when I hook up my laptop through my stereo, thanks.

There's a phrase that's applicable here: "Jack of all trades. Master of none." They can add-on all the extraneous media stuff they want to a PS4, but the only thing I need it to do is be a good gaming system. We'll know how well it performs in the upcoming weeks, but at least the emphasis is in the right place.

It's not that easy for corporations. They need to license the software, train staff to support issues that may come up, test software etc. It all takes time and money, Sony decided gaming was the focus so put music as a lower priority/later patch. Makes sense and I figured that was the case, glad to hear I was correct.

Are you kidding? It doesn't play CDs! That's unforgivable. We must destroy this console. And MP3s. It has to play those.

Also, my car doesn't play cassettes. Seriously, there's no place to even put them in to play them! WTF car manufacturers of the world?

Yeah, should be noted that is sarcasm. I don't care about MP3s or CDs in my PS4. I've literally only placed a music CD in a console one or two times. To see if I could. And then, I removed those CDs, popped in a game, and played it. Because it's a gaming console. And honestly, losing the CD function seems more like removing an obsolete technology than anything evil.

As for MP3s, I also don't play music while gaming. Most games have music that I wouldn't want to miss out on. Not to mention voice overs. It's good that they'll add it back in, but it's not a big deal. Maybe I'm stupid, but I buy game consoles for gaming. I know. I just blew your mind. I'm a maverick!
