It's just that game features take precedence, at least as far as the first few weeks and months are concerned. Music was pretty low on Sony's list of priorities, given the other things it had to worry about, [ ... ]
Yeah. Because downloading and compiling 'ffmpeg' or 'libmp3lame' or even 'libvorbis' was just too much damned trouble...
Yeah, because installing an OS on Sony hardware is just too much damn impossible.

Yeah? Well I like having the ability to play mp4s on my TV, instead of having to sit in front of my computer.

Like many I was shocked when people were disgruntled when they found out the PS4 didn't play music. For the most part I only played music on my PS3 (fat) was via the card slots. After awhile I just listen music via my computer while playing games. It's not that bad a set up. Console being a game system not an entrainment system isn't such a bad thing. Yet, that's what Xbox One is trying to be and everyone seems unhappy with it. You can't make everyone happy, just try to aim for least amount of people unsatisfied than anything.

Prioritizing games.... yeah... maybe. at least it can play games at launch.

It makes sense, really. When the PS3 launched it could do everything BUT play games (it had none)
There's 2, maybe 3 dozen games coming out for the PS4 (even fewer when you take out the ones that have been delayed), I'd say it still doesn't have any games. Plus no games from previous gens plus almost none of the features from the previous console.
I dont know. Maybe my math is wrong but "3 dozen" =/= 0

If you want to use them commercially, yeah.

Who cares if it plays music or not,
Probably people who want to listen to music on it?

What makes me laugh here is that looking back Xbox One got a lot of hate because Microsoft marketed it as a media device rather than a gaming console. Now PS4 is focusing on games leaving media features for later... the result is the same.

We don't want a media device, we want a gaming console that function as a media device apparently. I'm growing tired of this.
We want a device that is primarily for games but can also function as a media device. You know, sort of like how every other device of such nature. Seriuosly, neither Sony nor Microsoft should have ever released such uncompleted OS to begin with.

I don't care either way. My TV can play all the mp3 and video files I want and it's not even a good TV.
Thats kinda the point, if even your bad TV can do it, and a device which is centered around reading media from discs cant, isnt there something wrong with that?

Also, my car doesn't play cassettes. Seriously, there's no place to even put them in to play them! WTF car manufacturers of the world?
funny that you used car as your sarcastic example when cars players are known for thier notoriuosly outdated standarts, like not being able to read MP3s (remidns you of something?) or even read DVD discs at all. It is infact amazing that they managed to get out of cassete stage by now.

It's a device I buy because I want to play games on which is the function you said you wanted out of such a system... so no.

Regardless if you use specific functionality, the fact that every device but this can do it speaks of how unfinished this device look and raises suspicion on what else will be unfinished/buggy.

That's an entirely different discussion than the one I was making. Do you want to explain Einstein's theory of relativity while you're already off topic?

Here' s a few options in making you music listening needs easy!

Option A: Turn on Ipod/MP3/Phone, turn up volume and hit play

Option B: Turn on Radio

Option C: Use your computer for your musical needs

Option D: Hook up Ipod/MP3/Phone to computer

Option E: Find some CD's and a CD player

Option F: Break out a boom box

Tada! Problem solved! Thank you choosing CatInaBox help center for your tech needs. Have a nice day!

Honestly there are other ways to listen to your music without being restricted to the PS4. Just find a alternative method until they patch the MP3 functions in.

A: Ipod, really, because there are no other music players out there.... either way, crap quality, low battery life.
B: Because radio plays what i want!
C: fair enough, i already do.
D: how is that different from C?
E: People still use cds for music? ITs all digital and if in discs its either Lossless or MP3s here.
F: break out what? (i know what boom box is, noone here has one, we never had that phase)

There are other ways to to play music. there are alternative ways to get to stop a car so lets not use breaks.

Yes, because potentially dying in a car crash is at the same level of listening to music in other ways. Oh the poor music deprived people~

Oh boo hoo you can't use a PS4 as a MP3 player, there ARE other ways of playing music. Doesn't matter if it's low tech or new tech, don't limit your music devices to one thing.
Option D works because people do have quality speakers attached or built into their computers it'll work better than using your phone/MP3. Yes people still buy and use CD's even with digital downloads.

The point was: just because there are other, inferior methods, does not mean the main method is not needed.
