Tales of Zestiria Goes Classic Fantasy with Dragons

<youtube=qJfBkw1hYCs>
Nothing screams and sets fantasy ablaze like dragons, and Tales of Zestiria plans to use this fantasy classic.

Namco Bandai recently announced the next game in the nearly 20-year-old Tales of franchise. Tales of Zestiria will be all about dragons as the series looks to more traditional fantasy elements.

Tales of Zestiria's story will involve dragons in some way, possibly featuring as an important and central plot element. Producer Hideo Baba said during the reveal that dragons symbolize fantasy, so the team wants to focus on the mythical creature for the upcoming Tales game. A dragon is depicted in the game's logo. This will be the first game in the series to strongly focus on dragons.

The next Tales of game will have some new kind of battle system, most similar to Tales of Graces, released on PS3 in the West, in which players could rotate around opponents and balanced attacks around a character's attack gauge that increased or decreased depending on the actions taken (as opposed to the use of "technical points" used in other games in the series). Baba said he will announce more details concerning the battle system later, but he noted the team took fans' feedback to heart when designing the battles.

Four character designers are collaborating for Zestiria: Mutsumi Inomata (Tales of Graces), Kosuke Fujishima (Tales of Symphonia), Daigo Okumura (Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World), and Jin Iwamoto (Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology). So far two characters have been revealed.

Dragons certainly are a piece of the fantasy genre everyone recognizes. From The Hobbit to Dragon Age to Skyrim, dragons symbolize power and wisdom. Even so, no two dragons are portrayed the same. Exploration is common in these sort of stories, and Baba said the team will be focusing more on exploration in this game than in previous Tales games.

Tales of Zestiria is currently in development for the PS3. With a few other great RPGs set to release for PS3, there are still reasons to hold onto the console of the previous generation.

I'm just waiting for PS3's to hopefully drop in price... still don't have one, but there are so many games for it that I'd like to play someday. Loved Vesperia on the 360, watched the anime for... Abyss? Not sure, red-headed kid. Great games, wish I had gotten into them sooner. And there are, what? 3, 4 Tales games on the PS3 now? That there's like a year of gaming.

I have a growing suspicion Namco titles these games based on sneezes. For example, Symphonia. It's not a real word, and is never uttered once in game. It has no story significance, but it does sound like a noise a person would make after inhaling too much dust. While I have not played them, I assume the same goes for Xilia, Vespiria, and probably Zestiria.

All of that doesn't matter though because Tales of Symphonia is one of my all time favorite games. If the same people are working on this game, I wil definitely be keeping my eye on it.
Symphonia refers to the two worlds derived from the word symphony (shouldn't be that hard to get). Vesperia is the name of a star in the game and they name their guild Brave Vesperia. Xillia is a play on the word Zillion replacing the Z for X because it's an unknown variable which is meant to mean "countless" (silly, but they have put some thought into it).

There are currently 2 Tales games for PS3 with two coming up in the coming year (unless I am forgetting something Namco didn't localize... which is plausible) so there are two right now and then Symphonia Chronicles (technically two games) coming in March and Xillia 2 coming later this year. Oh and that was most like Abyss you watched.

OT: I bought a PS3 mainly because of Tales of Graces F. That was enough for me, but then they also gave me Tales of Xillia which made me overjoyed. Then they outdid themselves and announced both Symphonia Chronicles and Xillia 2. Yeah, getting a PS3 was worth it for me. I even got to play Valkyria Chronicles which I ended up loving.

-A Tales game
-A focus on dragons
-An emphasis on exploration
-A focus on dragons
-A focus on dragons

This game looks like it was made for me.
I hope the dragons aren't all villains or some afterthought (like they are in DA:O).

Dragons are becoming the next fucking zombies, good christ, why can't we get something original again? Y'know, something less about crappy ass dragons for the 10,000th time.

But why not just say that instead of making fake words? There are plenty of real words that convey those meanings just as well. I'll give you Vesperia, but it still sounds like a mouth spasm than a name.
Vesperia is probably a reference to the word "vesper", which means "evening prayer", "evening bell", or "evening star". Given the way the word "Vesperia" is used throughout the game, this makes a lot of sense. All they did was add "-ia" at the end, but pretty much every Tales game feels the need to add that.

Edit: Probably should have added that it basically means "evening", but the three definitions above tend to be extensions of that from what I understand. Either way, it all plays very well into the game's imagery and commentary, so I doubt "Vesperia" was just some random name.

Color me interested...then again, I say (internally anyway) the same of just about every other Tale's Of game whereas the only one I ever actually played was Phantasia...which I don't even own...I need to really assess my life up to this point, don't I?

Symphonia is supposed to be about the story, in Symphonia the central plot element is trying to join two worlds back into one, to bring two worlds into perfect harmony, hence Symphonia. every Tales game has a meaning in it's name that is central to the plot, for example Tales of the Abyss is quite literal as there is an Abyss in the game that you go to.

dragons greatly outdate Zombies by far, thanks in part to the Hobbit. modern fantasy is all modeled after Tolkien's books, which also happens to be the greatest work of christian apologetics ever written as you don't need to be a christian to truly enjoy the books.

Beyond this title...there be dragons.

Just as long as this title doesn't have heroes shouting at the dragons or taking arrows to knees, this should do well.

I will take that into account as I really need more PS3 games but I need to point out, PLEASE watch your post-count and, double posting habit! It's more acceptable to have one giant post than a triple-hit. Welcome to the Forums! (I know I'm a couple hundred posts late but still...)

Dragons are infinitely more original and interesting than zombies IMO. That however, doesn't excuse poor dragon games, which sadly is the majority of dragon games.

Keep talking and you'll end up with a zombie dragon game.

I'm sure there will be heroes shouting at the dragons, what I'd be more interested in seeing though, is the hero working with the dragons. It's too much to ask the game to star the dragons, I haven't really seen that since Spyro.

This actually looks pretty cool (plus it has dragons in it!)... though I wish I knew what was being said... ah well, guess I'll just have to wait for the localized version...

But we already have a zombie dragon game (kinda), World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King.

Because Tales of Symphony sounds more like a music game. Tales of countless sounds lame.

Why use the real name when they can actually make us wonder why it was named the way it was. Tales of Xillia and its explanation is silly regardless though.

Using the real names for things just doesn't work. We could call Tetris for block arrangement puzzle, but it just isn't practical. Tetris isn't a real word. Games, movies and books don't always explain their titles. No-one mentions the word Memento in Memento and no-one uses the word throughout the movie. I don't think we need to spell everything out.
