11-Year Old Stabbed to Death Over Dota Hack Dispute in the Philippines

The 16-year old suspect allegedly stabbed his "friend" over 40 times due to a Dota account hacking incident in Bulacan, Philippines.

In rather depressing news, an 11-year old boy was stabbed to death by his 16-year old "friend" in Malolos, Bulacan in the Philippines, due to an alleged hacking dispute over the suspect's Dota account. According to the report, the victim was last seen with the suspect last Sunday (February 23); and while the unnamed 16-year old boy initially denied seeing the victim, his blood-stained shorts were found near the crime scene, along with the blood trail leading to his house. Additionally, they found deep injure marks in the suspect's hands, which could have resulted from using the knife he used for the stabbing.

The murder itself happened in a construction site near the victim's house, where he was found with 40 stab wounds. It was also shown that one part of the wall was heavily smeared with blood, which indicate the suspect could have slammed the 11-year old's head repeatedly before stabbing him to death. To date, a murder case has been filed, but seeing as the suspect is still a minor, he will be put under the custody of the Philippines' Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

For reference, the report is referring to the original MOBA game based on the Warcraft III mod Dota and not Dota 2. Dota is widely played in gaming cafes across Asia and matches usually involve money. Regardless of what game you're playing, how old you are or where you're based, murdering someone over a video game might be one of the most depressing things to hear and read about.

That many stab wounds along with the blood smear on the wall imply a lot of anger that shouldnt be part of a 16 year old. This kid has serious problems that they should really identify sooner rather than later. Imprisonment alone wont change anything.

Hmmmm... I'm only speculating here but in a lot of Asian cultures gambling is a very big thing. They bet on everything. So maybe the commonality between the east and the west shouldn't be sought in the field of video gaming but in the field of back yard gambling which in some regions in Asia intersects with video games.

Looked at it this way I don't think it happens more in Asia than in the west. Though again, I'm speculating here...

I'd actually say the obsession the media has with its "competition" does nothing but encourage them to report on violence relating to video games... and that leads me to the conclusion that the West suffers from this far less than the East.

My GF is from the Philippines, they are pretty serious about their games over there and game cafe's are pretty dam big. This is saddening but not hugely surprising.

When I get annoyed at games I just kick my computer. Or smash things, violence against people, Australia says no.

This kid clearly has problems. To carry out such a vicious attack over such a little thing indicates this kid has a troubled mind and probably serious anger management issues. Now to wait for the inevitable "video games cause violence" reports.

I'm from the Philippines, and this went all over the news.
DotA and other competitive games here are like gambling games. Kids gamble here in every possible way, from tossing coins to flipping fake pokemon cards.

But I highly doubt the reason for his death is just because of a game. The kid probably used the game as an excuse to cover up personal grudges or just a matter of petty "pride"/"you have no right to talk to me like" attitude.

Children in the poor parts of the cities, live in a dog eat dog world. They would start a brawl from just a simple insult. That kid was a victim of that.

And oh the news channel ABS-CBN is kinda hard to believe. It is like the Fox news version in the Philippines. They sometimes air the wrong kind of news. Like this recent one where there were a "flesh eating" disease/virus in the country. Days later, they found out that it was just a person who received medical help from a news channel for a known skin illness but didn't return to continue the treatment days later. Talk about "well that escalated quickly"

Sounds like your typical depressed easily angered psychotic-episode teenager lashing out irrationally to the point of madness on some poor kid who happened to be the only thing this guy could take out his built up frustrations on. And now the kid is dead and this guy has screwed up his entire life. It's a shame that teenagers in crappy situations who do struggle with dealing with life end up doing something like this because no doubt if he'd had help sooner this whole thing could have been avoided. I wanna know where they were or what they have to say for themselves. Why was an 11 year old allowed to hang out with a 16 year old like this. This teenager must have had a history of aggression or extreme emotional irrational behavior that his age would have only made even worse. How did he get a knife and walk home covered in blood and the police end up being the ones discovering him and not his family?

Their is so much that indicates this guy was screwed up, neglected and dangerous and and that NO-ONE, especially a young child should have been anywhere near him.

Tragic and sad but also makes me angry that we live in a world where this sort of scenario isn't an extreme rarity.

Also, I don't really understand, how exactly do you hack a Dota 1 account? There's no progression. Dota 2 has levels and items, but Dota 1 has none of that. If the kid was just on his account when that guy was trying to play, that's pretty horrid.

Hmmmm... I'm only speculating here but in a lot of Asian cultures gambling is a very big thing. They bet on everything. So maybe the commonality between the east and the west shouldn't be sought in the field of video gaming but in the field of back yard gambling which in some regions in Asia intersects with video games.

The most common form of gambling over DotA/CS/Basketball in the PH:

1. Party challenges another party in a cafe
2a. Winner plays for free, losers pay for the winners' time playing OR
2b. Loser has to buy bottles of drinks (usually soda or tea) for the winners. 1 per person. OR
2c. A combination of both.

Sometimes there's money involved (aside from the money spent for the time playing). Amount varies. Usually it's around 10 USD for college students.

Way to exaggerate. It is leagues away from becoming Fox News. Singling out a news outlet for sensationalism doesn't make sense nowadays anyway, when sensationalism is prevalent in a good majority of media outlets, not only local but around the world.
