Papers, Please Creator Is "Kinda Sick to Death of Papers, Please"

Lucas Pope has no particular interest in revisiting Papers, Please with sequels or DLC expansions, despite the enormous success of the game.

By this point, everybody's aware that Papers, Please was the indie smash-hit of 2013, something that became exceedingly clear <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/10892-The-Escapist-Readers-Choice-GotY-2013-Recap-and-Winners>when it was nine votes away from our Reader's Choice Game of the Year award. Even though indie success-stories are increasingly common in our post-Minecraft world, that's an incredible achievement, and left us wondering what creator Lucas Pope will do next. According to a recent interview, Pope's next project probably won't have much to do with Papers, Please, because he's become rather fed up with the amount of time he's spent focused on a single game.

"Leaving Naughty Dog was like, 'I want to work on small experimental games'," Pope told VG247. "I've already worked on it for a year and four months, so it's already to me like I'm kind of sick to death of Papers, Please.

"My plan is to make a quick, short, free game. And then once I've gotten a little distance from Papers, Please, come back to it and do the iPad port, but I don't have any plans for a sequel or DLC or anything like that, at least not right now."

I'd say Pope's decision is for the best; even if Papers, Please practically <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/columns/extra-punctuation/10550-Bureaucracy-Em-Up>created a never-before-considered genre, the game is essentially a complete experience already. There's really no need to rework the forumula as is, so Pope will move on to new projects instead. It's also worth noting that this is a similar approach Notch took after Minecraft's success, which is why <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/128889-Scrolls-May-Go-Free-to-Play>we have games like Scrolls instead of Minecraft 2.

Even though Pope has no plans to make Papers, Thank You, that doesn't mean that the universe itself will be off-limits. "There's always a chance I could reuse some of the setting like I did with Papers, Please and Republia Times," Pope continued, "but the interesting part is the new concepts where I have a lot of challenge in trying to figure out what to do. If I was going to do a sequel or DLC, those challenges have been met and the problems have already been solved, so it's not that interesting to me anymore."

Whatever, just wash your hands.
Well, for those wanting more, I'm sure someone is working on a real working version of this.

The game was incredibly engaging, I still can't decide if I was having fun or not, but it certainly grabbed me like very few games ever did. I didn't knew the guy was an ex-Naughty Dog dev, that's quite awesome actually.

Captcha: Snow shovel. No thanks captcha, it's 31 °C over here, I certainly don't need it.

Perfectly reasonable and even a bit admirable, Lucas. Do what you love to do, mate.

Seems like a sensible attitude to have. I know I'm echoing something I said in the recent Jimquisition thread here, but "Papers Please" was a success because Pope had a vision and stuck to it. So why compromise that for his next game? He'll probably have a lot of customers because of his name alone (and I might be one of them, I thought "Papers, Please" was great.)

In this day of 10 Call of Dutys and horse armor, it's OK to not have a sequel. Many people liked Papers Please, and as far as I know, it didn't end on a cliffhanger.

I for one am excited for that iPad port. I've always wanted to try playing this game with a tablet to see how it goes. I think it'd be easier, too.

Good on ya, dude! I mean, the closest thing you could do with a game like this is to make a LOT of different versions of the game itself... It would be the Tetris and Bejeweled of this generation!

But, yeah, I'm glad to still see this dude wanting to work on something different in the near future... Sure, we should probably lower our expectations so that we do not cloud our judgement on it for not being as good (or as bad[footnote]Can't believe I have to say that to stay neutral in this context...[/footnote]) as Papers, Please, but at least we can't say that there was a lack of passion put into that particular project of his...

And now, for the last time, Lucas... *stamps his papers* You are free to go on with your next project...
Glory to Lucas Pope!

We are still working on the Prototype to our game, that been going on for a year, it is finally coming together, but it will take many more months. Someday I want nothing more than to work on another game, we came within days of putting the game on hold for a while, but a second wind with some fresh perspective on the game made us keep pushing. If he wants to work on something else, I totally sympathize.

You criticizing Mojang for releasing updates to Minecraft that those owning the game will never ever have to pay extra for?
Ummm, I think he's referring to the infamous Horse Armour DLC for Oblivion...

OT: Good for him. I haven't played Papers, Please (it's on my Steam/GOG Wishlist though), but I've heard a lot of good things about it and it's good to see a developer choosing to make a stand-alone game rather than churning out sequels they have no real passion for, despite the success gained from making the original game.

Great game but it's refreshing to hear someone avoiding the easy "quick cash" of a sequel or a DLC.

Looking forward to your next move Lucas

It really doesn't surprise me when critics like Adam Sessler laud and praise and hang so much on Papers Please that it becomes more like a ball and chain than a platform to greater things.

I think of it like an actor becoming typecast, and I believe for any creative individual, that's a poisoned chalice to be avoided.

Sense when is a game not getting made news, I could understand if he talked about a follow up and then changed his mind but until the next game from him is announced. Is game that was never planned on not getting released really worth reporting?

It's less than he doesn't want to do a sequel, and more that he's spent so much time fixated on this one game that he really wants to do something completely different.
