Flagship Trailer Gives a Glimpse at First Person Fleet Command

Urban Logic Games has released a new teaser trailer for its first-person, space-based RTS Flagship.

For the most part, real-time strategy games put player's in the commander's seat and the drag it far and away from the battlefield so they're less a participant and more of an omnipotent hand guiding their troops to victory from afar. With its game Flagship however, Urban Logic Games hopes to force players to the forefront. Giving the player their own fleet of warships, the game aims to drop players into a vast universe where they can forge their own fate among the stars.

Hoping to give prospective players a peek at the game to come, its developers have recently a trailer showcasing its combat and how it utilizes its unique first person view within the confines of a first person perspective. Commanding ships for instance, seems to be a task delegated to a control table at the center of the bridge on the player's ship. While the trailer only offered a few brief peeks at how this works, the controls themselves don't seem all that different from your typical RTS.

The first person view in turn, looks as though it will provide gamers with a view on space combat that will be flat-out thrilling to watch. Just personally, it reminded me of snapping the camera to the back of a ship in Homeworld and watching it up close as it duked it out with its foes. Put shortly, if Flagship can manage even a fraction of the fun I had doing that, then we'll have ourselves a winner. Give the trailer a watch and let us know what you think. Are you ready to command from the frontlines or would you prefer to keep things strictly top-down?

Well, it's a cool idea, but... I don't really see the point.

The trailer shows the player using a map screen type thing to issue orders anyway, so what's the point of looking out the window?

Interesting concept, although I can't help but frown at such terrible ship design.

I mean, seriously, a big glass sky-deck? Have we learnt nothing from the Geth about structural integrity?

Yesssssssssss. I've always wanted to do this in space battles.
I second this thought. Always wanted this kind of game to be available, so far with no luck. Hopefully this will be a decent game to look at.

If they add economics and an open world, it will be the game X-Rebirth never was.

Let's just say I shall be watching this. Closely.

It looks cool but for this type of game (what it tries to achieve) the visuals are a big part of it and what is shown here is a bit lackluster.

Also the character moves very stiffly, I dont like using the word immersion but for an RTS to be played in first person using an actual strategy table I think immersion is the actual selling point of the game. This is the sort of game where your ship taking a hit should send you and your teammates flying across the room, where when charging up the cannons should make the view tremble (I mean, if its a Big Mc Huge -One-Shot- Cannon), the sound design also really needs to be on par.

Basicly, all that AAA shit is very needed for a game like this to really work on its promise.

If its doesnt succed at that it just ends up being a crappy RTS. If it does its close to a space war commander simulation.

Another cool thing that it could have its multiplayer for the guys sitting on the other posts of the ship that would do the actual controlling of the ship (like that other game). The commander would issue the orders and "control" the other ships of the fleet while the rest would manually control their ship, and since this uses Occulus they could just be sitted in front of a computer and use their actual mouses to use that computer, basicly a virtual computer that works like a real computer, with a windows tab and the option to open and close them depending on what is needed to do

Kind of like this:

So basicly you would be using a computer inside a computer.

The graphics and models were obviously pre-alpha placeholders, so complaining about that is pretty pointless.

I think it's a really cool idea, but they'd definitely need a very robust way of controlling the rest of your fleet. Just a screen on your bridge ala Homeworld isn't going to cut it.

What would also be needed is great characterbuilding between your different shipmates and fellow captains, that could truly make it something great.

My first thought was: Those ships looked like ass design-wise.

The main site does have some screenshots of the fighters which gives me hope that the current ships are rough placeholders.

Otherwise, colour me interested.

I have two words for many of the complaints people are giving here, including visuals, UI, ship design, and so forth.

PRE.
ALPHA.

This looks so awesome it might finally make me play an RTS (not my style of game). Considering this is pre alpha I'm pretty excited about what they can do. For people saying it's a gimmick I don't buy it, placing you in the cockpit of one your ships really enforces the sense of scale that large battles and ships can have, and hopefully they do something in a campaign with your other ships and crew members. It would feel pretty bad getting to know a crew on a ship and then having to send them too their deaths to stall time or draw away or attention etc. This looks promising, I'll be keeping my eye for this one.

My thoughts while watching the trailer:

"Okay, that's kind of cool, but it's just going to be a pain in the ass to try and..."

"And there you have it."

Personally, I think it would be more awesome if they did what Guns of Icarus did, play a crew manning an airship, but with FTL style gameplay mechanics like venting oxygen and boarding.

Rule of Cool. With enough epic effects and sound assets I could see myself almost forgetting the mini map.

Not if it's the primary method of input you won't.

Granted, it's a very early trailer of an incomplete game, but the only player input I saw was through the map table thing. So running over to look out the window seems like a waste of time, beyond seeing some pretty explosions.

Hah, I never said I was going to be an effective player. I'm quite vulnerable to pretty explosions if I turn off my brain.

Of course, thinking rationally, this concept has a lot of question marks coming with it. How will the actual RTS gameplay get any depth, will the first person view also add more to the game (for instance you launch yourself in a fighter) or any other question one could come up with.

This...looks like it might have potential, I dig the idea of LARPING as a commander of a fleet.

I do hope the ship designs get better (and seeing by others comments I'm not only one to feel the designs are a bit uninspired), if this game is gonna be all about battleship combat then make some cool battleships!

The bridge is a bit small and narrow for my liking too so here's hoping bridges are dependent on ship classes and get more grandiose later on+u get a cool looking chair.

This is also one of the few games I reckon voice commands could be cool even if I wouldn't be using them.
