Wolverine & The X-Men Will Become Spider-Man & The X-Men This December

With Wolverine kicking the bucket this month, Spider-Man will be taking over his lead role in Wolverine & The X-Men.

So in case you haven't heard, <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/wolverine>Wolverine's going to die. We'd call that a spoiler but honestly, when Marvel's currently running a mini-series called Death of Wolverine, it seems a bit silly to even bother. Any who, with the Marvel's premier Canadian heading to what we're sure will be a permanent grave, there have been some questions as to how certain series involving the character will be affected. Case in point, where do you take a series like Wolverine & The X-Men when the title character kicks the bucket?

The answer is that you give it to <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/spider-man>Spider-Man.

That, at least according to recent reports, is what Marvel plans to do. Rather than just end the series outright, <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/marvel>Marvel will apparently be renaming the book this December and injecting everyone's favorite web head into the lead role. The resultant book, dubbed Spider-Man & The X-Men, will follow Peter Parker's exploits as the new guidance counselor at the Jean Grey Academy. The comic will be written by Elliott Kalan (The Daily Show) and illustrated by artist Marco Failla. Kalan, speaking about the new book, expressed his desire to hone in on the contrast between Spider-Man's experience as a superhuman and the X-Men's experience as a hated, separate race.

"He's not a mutant, and though he may be a friend of the X-Men, he's not a member of the family," he said. There's a lot of tension between mutants and an outsider whose true identity they can't even know for sure. But before Wolverine died he made it clear he wants Spider-Man at the school, and he asked Spider-Man to go on a mission for him. Unfortunately, Logan also wanted the mission kept secret from the other X-Men, so all they see is Wolverine's crazy pal inserting himself into their business."

All in all, it's certainly a novel way to keep the series going in the wake of Wolverine's demise. That being said, time will have to tell if Kalan, Failla and Marvel are able to push passed mere novelty and deliver something genuinely worthwhile.

Well if I recalled correctly, Peter does sometime become a teacher or being part time so I guess it is alright. Still I wonder how he was manager inbetween being a superhero in New York and being a staff in the school. Still if Wolvering can doit (part of the X-Men and also part of the Avengers) I suppose he can too.

Yes. Yes they are; and that is why I love them.

Beast was doing that before it was cool.

OT: Could be good. That team usually does a decent job. I would still rather have Jason Aaron back on that series but he is killing it with Thor right now. At least this series could last a couple years, Wolverine isn't coming back for at least year if Marvel is smart (I think I read somewhere that they won't consider bring him back until 2016 but I call BS on that).

Well to be fair there, Spidey has been long considered "The Fifth member of the Fantastic Four" so that one made more sense.

To be honest I'd prefer it be called Storm and the X-Men since she's Headmistress of the Jean Grey Institute after Logan dies and they did a storyline where Spidey taught at Avengers Academy for a day and decided never again.

Nope! The way the title of this article was phrased, I also thought they were launching another Marvel animated series. I often fantasize about where "Wolverine and the X-Men" would have gone if it were given another season. My thoughts:
-Logan/James Howlett, Jean, and Scott settle the relationship trouble
-Magneto learns the Inner Circle played him and the X-Men for chumps and he single handedly kicks their asses (which only gets funnier when you recall Magneto was a Jewish peasant in Nazi Germany and the Inner Circle are a bunch of blue-bloods, who may or may not have Nazi connections)
-More building up to the OTHER horrible future with Mr. Sinister and Apocalypse
-Wolverine picking up where he left off on the hunt for Weapon X, with the rest of the X-Men insisting they go along for the ride, and finding out its WWII origins as Weapon I, a.k.a. Project Rebirth, the same project that turned scrawny Steve Rogers into the first Captain America

When your eyes are set in a mass of translucent gelatin that surrounds your body rather than in your skull behind actual opaque flesh, you will always look surprised.

Like someone else said, I would prefer it was Storm and the X-Men since she is running things, but she's also in a relationship with Wolverine at the moment so maybe she leaves the school for a bit rather than this being a straight forward case of them short changing the black woman character by making her play second fiddle to Spider-Man.

I'm still intrigued enough by the idea of Spidey trying to run the strangest school in the world for a dead friend. I was planning to take the title off my pull list before if it didn't continue with Storm in charge, but perhaps I'll wait a bit.

That's what I meant, it doesn't really make sense for it to be Spider-Man and the X-Men other than Spidey is a popular character that will bring in sales (valid enough reason I suppose.) Me personally, I'll be getting it because I am a Marvel Zombie and I like the characters involved. Just there were other titles and focuses for the book I would have prefered.

No, that was my reaction as well. Well maybe not so much "sweet!" But I did think they meant the return of the TV show.

OT: Spider-man isn't even a mutant, why is he going to be leading the X-men? Also why are they killing off Wolverine?

Same reason why they "killed" Cap, Thor, Spidey, Human Torch, etc etc etc: to get people talking and hopefully to jump into comics to see the fallout before bringing that character back to life a year or so later.


More on topic I guess it'll make some interesting stories, but it's not like the school was short on actual mutants to take Wolverine's place. Although Wolverine has been to the go-to guy for Marvel to stick into books where he sticks out like a sore thumb, so I guess now that he's going to be "dead" Spidey will be taking that spot. Like he wasn't doing enough of that already.
