Wonder Woman's Movie Origin Revealed?

Producer may have revealed Dawn of Justice's Wonder Woman will use the "New 52" origin-story

A Vine clip of "New 52" [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/dawn%20of%20justice] origin-story, rather than the classic version.

Originally, rebooted [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/the-big-picture/2628-All-The-World-Is-Waiting] its entire Universe three years ago, it was changed. The current "New 52" version of Wonder Woman is a demigod - the result of a sexual tryst between Hippolyta and Zeus - with the "classic" origin explained-away as a lie spread for Wonder Woman's protection.

In the Vine clip, Roven describes Wonder Woman as "the daughter of Zeus." It remains unknown the size or scope of Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot's) role in the film, including whether or not the origin will be mentioned at all or saved for her hypothetical solo feature later.

Of course, since this is WB, we are not even going to get THAT origin story (I have no problem with WW being a demigod, there has been versions that walked around the issue).

Instead, Wonder Woman will be the result of a rape of a regular human being and Hippolyta (the Zeus version also being told as a lie to protect her), because having mythological gods walking around is not gritty and realistic enough for them...

Not surprised, didnt think WB would have the balls to tell the original origin story - the 52 origin is a far safer option. The original would of been great in a movie, the same way the Thor movie worked well with the Norse god stuff. I think you have to believe in the characters and treat it with the respect it deserves. If DC has no confidence in its source material, why would the fans watching it? But then maybe they tried it and couldnt make it work. After all they are going dark and gritty so couldnt do the original origin and make it work in a dark, gritty and realistic way.

Let's be honest: BOTH are conventional as hell. Seriously, making people out of clay and then given life by the gods is nothing new to storytelling. Heck, it's just as likely as Zeus being the father considering how Greek mythology works.

I'm not a particularly big fan of Wonder Woman and I haven't read her comics prior to the New 52. That may skew my opinion somewhat, but am I the only one who prefers the Zeus origin story? I mean, seriously, she was made out of clay? That's the stupidest origin I've ever heard, and I just recently watched the CW's Flash pilot.

This seems like an odd decision. I thought the whole idea of resurrecting Wonder Woman was to make a movie about a strong, feminist womyn who don't need no man. But this makes it hard to ignore the fact that the mythological Hera was a jealous wife who wasn't very feminist-friendly at all. I guess the movie could be about generational differences, where Hera doesn't approve of Wonder Woman wearing pants and having premarital sex?

I could say this isn't as stupid as making Wonder Woman into a man-hating psycho who wants to be sexually conquered by a man or a Superman (for a better explanation, go to www.atopthefourthwall.com and find the reviews on The Dark Knight Strikes Again and All-Star Batman & Robin), but its still pretty fucking dumb.

Congratulations DC and Warner Bros, you couldn't be more out of touch with your fans if you were sealed inside a plastic bubble and locked inside a underground bunker that is 100 miles below seas level. -_-

Anything can sound stupid on paper. Execution and good story telling can change your entire outlook. One of the things you'll realize early on is that the clay origin has more to do with Hippolyta's character than Diana herself. Through her story we learn about her beginnings, how the Amazons transformed the island of Themyscira into their home, their mistreatment at the hands of Hercules and their loyalty to the gods they believe in. What Diana represented to the Amazon culture wasn't just another warrior amongst their ranks, but an entirely new outlook on life. She was the first Amazon to be born on the island of Themyscira and was the first child ever seen by the Amazons.

One of my favorite depictions of this origin came from Gail Simone's run where a silent Hippolyta approaches her Amazon sisters with what they believe to be a fake clay figure of a child in her arms. When she removes the cloth and raises the very living child into the air, she declares to her sisters

"I give you your Princess. I give you our daughter!"

And that's when it hit me. Wonder Woman being born of clay isn't really meant to be original or unique for the sake of it. It was meant to distinguish DC's Amazons from all the rest of the Amazon depictions in the past. Being made of clay means that Diana is a part of the Amazon society since it was their centuries of hard work and devotion that made Diana possible. She literally is the daughter of the Amazons.

But now that mythology is gone. With the New 52 origin, what makes her unique is that she's Zeus illegitimate daughter who was apparently an accident. She is now associated with a male god than a warrior race of women. THAT to me betrays the entire idea of Wonder Woman.

I didn't like the new 'Zeus is her daddy' origin.

I'd rather it have been either the clay story, or the whole 'Hades is my daddy' bit they tried in the DCAU.

Actually, I'd like it to be Hades. Poor guy doesn't get any recognition as the only half-decent god in that whole pantheon.

Zeus as her daddy... eh, that's cliche. I mean, clay is nothing new either, but it's not as widely used these days.

I'm not sure why everything involving WW has to turn into an intifada.

First no WW on the big screen and we scream, "Where is Wond Woman? We have Batman and Superman where is the last piece of the trinity?". So they add her to the cast of Batman v Superman. And we scream, " Why can't she have a solo movie?"

They give us Gal Gaddot and we scream, " Who is this twig of a woman and why is she Wonder Woman?" So she hits the gym. And we scream, "She still isn't buff enough."

They tell us they want to try to fit her into the established movie universe by making her a Kryptonian off shoot and we scream, "Why are you disrespecting Wonder Woman's mythos?" So they use the currently employed backstory and we scream, "Why won't you use the classic back story!"

I suppose next we get to look forward to complaints about screen time, how much she appears in promotional material, how she fares in a fight against supes, how high she is on the cast list in the credits.

Almost wonder why the studio even bothers. Damned if they do damned if they don't. Still it's good that people care hopefully the movie will be both good and successful and we'll get a solid Wonder Woman movie franchise.

But they're obviously going to "do". WB obviously cares about getting a WW movie made, they scrapped plans for a straight Batman vs Superman movie to add her.

I really can't address this because I don't know what you think is stupid about it or why, but I will say I am not at all a fan of the Zeus origin. In the previous continuity, Wonder Woman's immaculate birth among the Amazons left her free to find her own self-definition without having to either reference or refute the ideology of "man's world." In Nu52, she becomes defined by her father...and apparently that holds true in the movie too, if they're describing her as the daughter of Zeus and not as, y'know, Wonder Woman.

We are annoyed because she's getting a bit role in a movie by a creator we do not trust (look at the trailers for Sucker Punch, then look at how badly Zack Snyder screwed it up), and people like you are talking about it like it's the capital trial for the survival of Wonder Woman in film.

We do not want Zack Snyder to produce a Batman v. Superman movie as bad as Man of Steel was, and have people use Wonder Woman as a scapegoat for why it failed.

We do not want Wonder Woman to miss out on the possibility of a movie franchise just because DC stacked the deck against her in a manner they never would against Batman or Superman.

We do not want to spend another decade listening to troglodytes pretending they gave her a fair go, and saying they won't make /that/ mistake again.

arm I'm pretty sure that movies still being made...she's just in it

of coarse this is WB/Zach Snyder I don't trust their ability no matter what superhero theyre adapting, so maybe I shouldn't care to much

I'm new here so hopefully I didn't butcher this. Doesn't help that I'm on a phone trying to quote people.

We don't know for sure how big of a role she'll get yet, but I'd be surprised if it was a bit role when she hit comicon with Afleck and Cavil. On the Snyder issue, I thought he did an admirable job on The Watchman. Also unlike a lot of potential directors he cares about comicbooks, he cares about the source material I trust him to make a solid effort to bring these characters to life. But I guess this could be his chance to prove one way or another. I don't think you need to worry about the movie failing Batman prints money they could have thrown in plastic man and he could safely coast his way into a leading movie role.

Sorry, I meant it as short hand for fans; while trying to share the responsibility and thus blunting the potential for the perception that I was attacking fans. I considered saying, "you people." But I was concerned this would not likely prompt healthy dialog. I agree it sounds awful in retrospect and I will strive to do better going forward.

Exactly. They hastily put her and Batfleck in what was supposed to be a simple Man of Steel sequel, hire the bad actress of the F&F franchise
In all fairness to Ms. Gadot, I don't think we can dismiss her as a bad actor. She's only been in crap movies with crap directors. It's possible a good director will be able to get something better out...not that I think Zach Snyder is that director, but still.

Ah, okay. I still disagree (I'm a fan, and I've never once said a word about Gal Gadot's physique for the role), but good to have clarification.
