It's probably one of those bullshit Final Fantasy X attacks that instakills you. Several enemies in the game have one and they are quite ragequit inducing.
I haven't played FFX in nearly 15 years, so... I don't remember that.
I'm going through it again to try to beat the point I last ragequit at, the bossfight on Mount Gagazet. First it uses a movie that gives your whole party the zombie status ailment then it mass heals you, given that to the undead healing magic is murder you know how that works out. I never figured out the whole customizing items thing so that'll hopefully solve my problem this playthrough.

Time for an overly dramatic death scene... again. Getting stabbed straight through didn't kill Gunny, why would getting shot straight through kill Not-Cloud?
Well, Gunny did have the advantage of being someone with enough character and personality to be worth keeping around. I'm not certain the the great overlord Grey Carter sees fit to spare this one.
If we go with that, the medic is the one we'll keep around, not the guy that knows exactly one word.

Right. Besides, Gunny's already got the muscle covered in Erin's growing party.

That's what happens when you don't level grind and do sidequests, actually. This was obviously final dungeon, Erin was supposed to get new levels, equipment, OP skills and more superleveled characters in the party before even trying it.

Maybe now Not-Cloud will go all chatterbox on us, in some long-winded dying speech.

Don't mean to be thick, but...

...is it role reversal because she held the door for him?
Hehehe. That's one way to look at it. xD
I think it's a FF7 reference though.

OT: So, if he's going to die, will his last words be, "Whatever..."? ;p

Not-Cloud stayed behind in order to fight of the guards, allowing our heroes to escape unharmed and confront the big bad.

But our heroes didn't do that, stayed right where they were, and ended up pulling him into the elevator regardless.

So Not-Cloud is going to die for literal nothing.

Critical hit.
Or cinematic that breaks the in-game rules. The lack of damage numbers makes me think the later.
Most JRPG deaths are cinematics. If rules applied to aerith's death you would just use a phoenix down.

If rules applied to Emmyrins deaht you would just relaod an earlier save and send in heavy cavalry first instead of pegasus knights

The later is not the same. Unless it's Undertale, saving and loading isn't considered part of the in-game world. Phoenix downs are.

Should they be firing that indoors? A shot like that could drill a hole right through the entire building.

The fire meblem reference was meant as a joke about savescumming to combat permadeath.

Seeing that I don't play Fire Emblem (and don't know the details of its permadeath system), that went pretty much way over my head.
