This gag was planned from the inception of the character. Generally, however, my callbacks are off the cuff. Example: All the raccoon callback gags are spur of the moment things.

As for punch/reveal spoilers: I generally don't write EDA with comments in mind as one of the problems with weekly or biweekly comics is that it gives people a lot of time to digest each page and read between the lines. When you've got twenty or thirty people speculating about a gag or a twist, at least one of them is bound to get it right.
