Dawn of Justice's Aquaman Revealed

[tweet t=https://twitter.com/ZackSnyder/status/568650209581858817]

Jason Momoa's version of Aquaman from Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice was revealed today via Twitter.

While we feel safe saying that enthusiasm for Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice isn't quite as high as DC Comics and Warner Bros would probably like it to be, there's no lack for people who are eying the film with a healthy dose of curiosity. And while much of the movie is still understandably under wraps, director Zack Snyder has periodically been kind enough to let out <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/136438-SDCC-2014-Dawn-of-Justices-Wonder-Woman-Revealed>a few snippets revealing how certain characters will be realized in his growing superhero universe. The latest addition to that list? <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/135396-Report-Jason-Momoa-is-Aquaman-Will-Appear-in-Dawn-of-Justice>Jason Momoa's version of <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/136800-Aquaman-Film-Two-Screenwriters-Hired>Aquaman.

Revealed by Snyder <a href=https://twitter.com/ZackSnyder/status/568650209581858817>in a Tweet earlier today, Momoa's Aquaman will be long haired and bearded with minimal armor and a lot of tattoos. The new look also comes equipped with the character's trademark trident which, according to canon <a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/136734-Batman-v-Superman-Director-Zack-Snyder-Defends-Aquaman-Bashing>and Snyder himself, is powerful enough to cut even Superman's skin. Along with revealing the new Aquaman, the poster in Snyder's Tweet includes the words "Unite the Seven." The meaning this could vary depending on whether they're attached to Dawn of Justice itself, or if they're just meant for Aquaman. If they're a tagline for the movie it could mean uniting the Justice League. If they're exclusive to Aquaman however, we're probably talking the seven seas.

Just reacting to this image personally, I'm going to say that I don't hate it. Granted, the dull, washed-out color palette is the same one that's already elicited groans from DC fans on several occasions. Moreover, when you really get down to it, this isn't too far off from how Momoa looked during his famous performance as Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones. That said, it's still not bad, and it certainly doesn't look like a character that mainstream audiences will make fun of, something that constantly happens to Aquaman for some reason. Heck, if anything, this take on the character could finally reverse the never-ending stream of undeserved ridicule he receives. What do you think? Is Momoa's version a keeper, or should Snyder and company throw it back into the water?

.....So hands up here who doesn't think this movie is gonna be a cluttered mess?

Anyway, great casting for Aquaman. Momoa knows how to act as a formidable force, and I think that's exactly what the character needs.

washed out color pallet and busy ascetic aside I still think Momoa can do a decent to good job with this character.

But.....is anyone else bothered that his trident has 5 prongs not 3? it's not a trident it's a pitch fork

I think the casting is great... but I also think Zack Snyder has ruined the film a bit. It's amazing how afraid of the DC comics universe WB is when you consider how popular the television series associated with DC are.

I think the casting is great... but would it have killed them to make him blond?

I also wonder what obstacles come up from giving a guy who lives in the ocean tattoos.

It's because magic.... When something is magic it can be trident no matter how many points it has. It can be a Menorah and still be a trident!

Good point... Still, Aquaman's mighty pitch fork doesn't have the same ring to it.

It's like that in the comics occasionally. I guess when your king of Atlantis you make your trident with as many prongs as you please.

*raises hand* I honestly believe they can pull this off. One of the things I think (hope they're competent enough that) they would have picked Snyder for is to use the visuals in the story for character development. That would make the narrative significantly less... cluttered.

I commend DC for it's ballsy decision to take this stance to remind us of the 80's and the dark age of comics, but I feel that he needs more belts, pouches, smaller and more pointed feet, for the pitchfork to be some sort of gun, but I'm afraid the name aquaman has to go, henceforth by the power invested in me by Rob Liefeld I now dub this character SharkGunToothBlood.... gun.

I actually quite liked Man of Steel, you see...
However, still looking forward to Suicide Squad a bit more.

Yah, I didn't even know aquaman was being added in. Maybe I missed a lot of news on this. I'm sure this has all been planned in advance; but it has the feel of something they are making up as they go along. Surely, that can't be the case.

As for the casting - sure Momoa seems a good fit. No reason for me to think other wise. The tats though. You know the grown ass man that still buys stitched and bejewelled shirts at Buckle with lots of tats, but none of them of any personal significance - they are all just designs and tribal stuff picked out of the badassery cliché book? I'm instantly reminded of that guy. (NOTE: Those of you that have tattoos don't take that as a slight -- well-designed, skillfully-applied ink, esp. when the image is something of personal interest or passion to canvas, is always awesome. I also feel very honored when someone commissions me for a design) The scale theme is cool and all, but what is the rest of that mess?

All those beautiful colorful fish in the ocean - or the cool sleakness of a shark or marlin - or the mirror sheen of so many others, and the disign crew goes with the scheme that's all camoflaged and washed out. Awesome. So exciting.

Like that of a flounder or something. Flounder Man.

He certainly doesn't look kingly, or even the least bit regal. But this is the Zack Snyder aesthetic now; and it's a given. Some people will like it and that's ok. Others won't like it and that's ok too.

Aquaman's trident is only sometimes actually a trident. One older version had three prongs but practically came together in a complete circle, while the New 52 has 5 points.
Anyways, I'd wish they'd put a shirt on him. I guess they're going to play up the "iron hard Atlantean skin" to explain it, but if he's trying to be all dark and gritty some actual armour beyond rippling pecs might help.

I've got no problem with the casting (that Kubrick stare he's got is almost frightening), but that body art... if I'd been asked to imagine a tattooed-up Aquaman, I would've envisioned something more... well, aquatic. What we've got here is more akin to what the Jack of Spades might look like in a gritty reboot of Alice in Wonderland.

Well, it's not like "trident" means "three teeth" or something!

I was assuming the "seven" referred to members of the Justice League, since thats what they're making Bats v. Supes an obvious lead in to. Which would be Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and I believe Flash as characters they've got confirmed actors for (oddly for Flash they haven't used the guy currently playing him in the TV show...), so who's the seventh? They got a Martian Manhunter they haven't told us about?

It looks like someone went through Lordi's discarded costume choices and decided to put that on.

Seriously, I think I have a metal album that looks similar to this.

It managed to look generic and desperate at the same time.

I think the with the 5 version the two outer prongs, are not technically prongs.

3 prongs, 2 hooks.

As you can see in both the comic version posted and can sort of see in Momoa's the central 3 are much thicker and have a "teeth" ends, whilst the outer two are smaller and are hook's (well they are in the comic one, we can't see in Momoa's).

So it still technically counts as a trident because it only has three teeth.

I'd like to see it in actual colour before I say whether or not I like the design.

Either way, I still think the movie will fail.

That's about what I expected. Heck, I approve of it because it gets away from Arthur Curry white-as-a-freaking-sheet depiction which isn't what I think of when I imagine the king of the seven seas. I think more of a pacific islander look (which Mamoa is, being native Hawaiin) and the tribal markings help give this idea that this is a guy at one with the seas, in fact even being their king. What's gonna be funny is whenever Aquaman is next to anyone else from the Justice League because Mamoa is freaking HUGE. Seriously, this means the shortest (confirmed) member is Superman.

You clearly haven't been paying attention recently, Aquaman is only a joke in the context of Superfriends because he was a joke then. But now...

He's popular.

It is certainly a cool concept, but it is just too dull for my liking. I have a feeling that this film is going to fail for the same reason why Spider-Man 3 and Amazing Spider-Man 2 failed: Too many big characters having introductions at the same time, with each needing screen time, but none having enough to be effective.
