Cliff Bleszinski's New Game LawBreakers Revealed

New studio founded by Gears of War creator provides details on first game.

A debut trailer for the first game from Boss Key Productions has announced its official title, LawBreakers, during a livestream earlier today. Previously known as "Project Bluestreak", the game is a team-based arena first-person shooter which will utilize gravity-based mechanics.

The trailer released today provides the post-post-apocalyptic setting for LawBreakers, a world where mankind has rebuilt after an event known as The Shattering destroyed the moon and rendered gravity on Earth inconsistent. The stage for conflict is set when the world's criminal cartels unify under one banner and, calling themselves the "Breakers", begin to spread drugs and violence using the technological advances humanity created to survive in the aftermath of the cataclysm.

A brief follow-up stream [http://www.twitch.tv/bosskeyproductions/v/12922324] on Twitch hosted by Community Manager Rohan Rivas after the announcement (since removed) provided some additional details. Currently, the team is developing content geographically located in the United States, as referenced by the trailer, but the door was left open for the possibility of other locales in the future. Rivas also noted that the game is being viewed as a "service" by the developer, which is planning for long-term content support following launch.

A gameplay reveal has been set for Friday at 9am ET, with a trailer showing the game in action due to arrive on its official YouTube channel.

Boss Key is also not wasting any time in giving players an opportunity to check it out for themselves. A playable demo will be offered this Saturday and Sunday in Seattle (during, but not part of, the PAX Prime show), with more specific details on times and location to be announced soon.

I do not like the way he's brandishing that "service" word about like it's nobody's business. Could take someone's eye out with that thing.

Seems like a neat setting. But any kind of decent singleplayer planned? We have enough arena games imo.

It seems like a fairly interesting setting, but I'm a little worried about the execution. Hell, we don't even know what type of game it is yet.

(The, either you serve the law or you break it thing has me a little worried. Granted Cliffy could intentionally show the law agency going to extreme measures to defeat the cartels, but it could easily try to show them as good guys and look over their more questionable actions.)

Generic the Game: Revenge of the Tired Ideas

Seriously, RoboCop meets Judge Dread meets Elysium and they all have a great big generic missionary position orgy in the Halo multiplayer.

Yay, a video game trailer with no gameplay. Seriously, this doesn't show me a damn thing about the gameplay.

Wow, i didnt set my standards very high for Cliffy when he struck out on his own, and what he has to show for the last couple of years of work sounds even less appealing to me than the new Gears of War.

Mind you, i would have been less pessimistic if be bothered to go loud with a gameplay video instead of a story teaser that, from the sound of things, is going to be all the backstory we are going to get.

I'll give you credit for not taking the easy shot at Gears of War. ;)

I never had a problem with Cliffy. Always liked EPIC Games when he was there. And even though it was a "Big Dumb Shooter", I enjoyed every minute I spent playing Gears of War. But, I do agree with this quote pretty much 100%. This game looks terribly uninspired and not very interesting. And just as a premise to facilitate yet another arena shooter? Ugh.

But hey, I wasn't going to play it anyway since I don't get that in to competitive FPS games so my opinion carries little weight here anyway. I'm interested in games, not "services".

According to the article it's going to be an Arena Based Shooter. So think TitanFall only with more Crack Down and less Gundam. Toss a handful of people into an arena, say "These 6 are the cops, these 6 are the "breakers", go at it until the time limit or kill limit is reached."

(The, either you serve the law or you break it thing has me a little worried. Granted Cliffy could intentionally show the law agency going to extreme measures to defeat the cartels, but it could easily try to show them as good guys and look over their more questionable actions.)
If it is indeed just an Arena Based Shooter, I don't think you'll have to worry about that since the story is going to be negligible. As someone else pointed out already: chances are that trailer contains all the story there'll be.

Hey, if the balls to release the narrator drunk doesn't make you go "MUST BUY AT SOME POINT", I don't know what will.

Meh, these guys didn't invent these ideas. And RoboCop was basically inspired by judge dredd.

I think it'll really depend on the gravity mechanic.

Will it be stuff we've already seen before? Or are we looking at a neat new idea.

And gears of war was a nice game. It's just that everybody imitated them and they're now looked down upon for bring kinda generic. Like when people complain about uncharted being the same stuff we've seen a hundred times already.

And just like that I can feel my interest slipping away. More people shooting at each other in a sixty dollar game...not really my cup of tea.

I was wondering when Clifford was going to stop latching onto the stories of other, more interesting people and begin his own. And if that's all he's capable of, then it's quite clear that he is a boring person. Which wouldn't be so bad if he weren't damn proud of himself.

1000% Agree. For some reason Cliffy B has the aura of a Tobacco Company exec. Part of it is because instead of recognizing what makes us, the consumer, uncomfortable about those business practices he seems to be callings us out as if we're too stupid to understand. He has this air about him that is some how he is above us all looking down... the oculus comment he made was such a tone deaf statement... He's in my opinion running the risk of being another Peter Molyneux where what ever genius he might have had is lost in his ego...

Combine that with possibly the most literal example of generic story doesn't exactly help, either.

I mean, I'd still want gameplay, but some reason to give a crap otherwise might wet my whistle until the gameplay trailer drops.

So it's going to have active multiplayer for about two weeks?

Or bored. This is the tone of voice I get when I'm trying to politely end a conversation, only slightly exaggerated.

Possibly because he's in the gaming industry and breathing?

OK, to everyone who's complaining about the lack of gameplay, the article JUST SAID there will be a playable demo very shortly here. Which is, of course, the exact opposite of no gameplay. So just stahp with that.

I swear, you'd think Cliffy B. is a war criminal from the amount of hate he gets around here.

Other than that, hope the demo's alright... Knowing the Cliff, it just might be... to other people, I guess...
