Disney Wants to Release a New Star Wars Every Year Indefinitely

As long as people keep buying tickets, Disney will keep making Star Wars movies.

It's been ten years since Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. It was 15 years between Episode VI and Episode I. How long will it be between Rogue One [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/tag/view/star%20wars%20the%20force%20awakens?os=star+wars+the+force+awakens]? Just one year. How about the one after that? Also one year. In fact, Disney plans on releasing a Star Wars movie every year for... well, as long as people keep buying tickets for them.

"If the people at the Walt Disney Company, which bought Lucasfilm for $4 billion in 2012, have anything to say about it, the past four decades of Star Wars are merely prologue," writer Adam Rogers wrote in a feature on Wired magazine [http://www.wired.com/2015/11/building-the-star-wars-universe/]. "They are making more. A lot more."

"A lot more" to the tune of one every year for as long as they can. In fact, Rogers thinks that Disney will milk Star Wars so hard, and for so long, that if you were alive when A New Hope launched back in the 70s, you'll probably be dead by the time they stop making new ones.

Reportedly, the company plans on achieving this gargantuan level of production by branching out Star Wars films Marvel Universe-style, with lots of stand-alone films focusing on different aspects of the universe. Indeed, next year's Rogue One [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/142099-Star-Wars-Rogue-One-Might-Give-Actor-Peter-Cushing-CGI-Resurrection] is exactly that.

So, if you have hopes for characters and settings from the Star Wars expanded universe, you may one day see them gracing the silver screen in one of many, many planned Star Wars spin-offs. My fingers crossed for a full Knights of the Old Republic feature!

I... HOW!? Unless they really skimp on the budgets for these movies it's going to be downright impossible to do it. Marvel kind of cheats by releasing multiple MCU movies that they develop simultaneously but if these Star Wars movies are going to release yearly than that really makes me worry about their quality AKA Assasin's Creed's problem.

According to the article, they are pretty much doing the same thing as Marvel, but with one movie a year rather than a bunch.

Okay, this sounds cool, but...I'm not going to lie. I really don't want this. I'm afraid this will lead to burn out for me. I mean, I gobbled up the Star Wars books when they came out, each and every one set after Return of the Jedi, but they were books. I just don't think it's a good idea to keep milking the movie aspect. Give it some time to rest. Let people get excited about a new movie, not go, "Oh, it's that time of year again." That is something that should never happen to Star Wars.

Then again, if they somehow manage to make these movies amazing, then I will just eat my words and enjoy them.

Yeah sounds like a great idea! Let's run an already somewhat tired franchise just into the ground! Hey Disney's got to justify that buyout somehow am I right? And let me just say I love the marvel cinematic universe but one, they really took some time with those and more importantly, marvel has a much more structured universe to work with, the star wars universe is kind of...a mess...oh well, I guess I'll just stop watching them when they stop being good

We are either going to get a Marvel Studios situation, 2-3 movies a year, or a Call of Duty situation where... wait... both same thing. It will just get more meh and meher the more it happen. Certain fans will pledge allegiance to an IP thinking, "They are doing this for me because they love me", but they aren't because the clear goals of Disney, EA, Activison, etc., is profit. Time to milk the IP dry.

Too much of something is not always a good thing.

Well they're gonna release a lot of stand alone films based in the star wars universe but separate from the timeline right? so theoretically it would kind of be the same thing right? it's not gonna be the same cast every time, just gonna have crossovers every now and then. Plus I suspect we're gonna see a much wider variety in budges like we do with marvel films.

But the Assassin's creed worry is quite real. I feel like Star Wars is gonna lose some special-ness if they keep using the same crawl, and roughly the same kind of movie year after year.

....and suddenly a new feeling of dread and disappointment washes over me as the idea of yearly installments like madden and assasins creed for star wars becomes realized.

If they don't try to make them all include the same cast and branch into different genres of movie, this isn't necessarily a bad thing. As long as they avoid the marvel trap of having super epic battles at the end of everything I wouldn't mind a star wars detective series about crime in the bowels of Coruscant. Imagine how much fun you could have with conspiracies and crimes in a sci-fi setting that also has just enough mysticism for shit like mind control and spirits of the dead.

Star wars drama about a mother trying to decide whether to hide her child's manifesting force powers, fleeing jurisdiction of the jedi order, or handing them over to be trained and very likely killed lightyears from home in a galaxy on the precipice of civil war.

Drama about a republic clerical worker folded into the new imperial system who must decide between tacit acceptance and support of a new oppressive regime or support of the movement to destroy it and restore what once was.

Heist movie on Nal Hutta. Really don't need to say more

Horror movie about an exploratory expedition crashed on a lush, uncharted world, and their only hope for escape lies in a decrepit confederate cruiser. It's beat up, but still has some power. What little living crew is dead... but there's one body missing. How long do Pau'an live again?

A classic western but with aliens and laser guns.

War movie from the perspective of one of the few non-clones serving in the Grand Army of the Republic. Or hell, even one of the clones.

Crime movie also on Nal Hutta, or really any other heavily urbanized planet.

Lots of stuff you can do, and this is just the time periods the movies have covered. Any older stuff has Epic and Adventure written all over it.

I like Star Wars but I'd rather have a concentrated dosage every once and awhile than an annual installment, thank you very much.

F*** I'm tired of the hype train already and it's not even December. -_- is there a way to blacklist Star Wars on twitter and facebook? If I see one more Darth Vader shower head or Loopin Chewie game I'm going to flip. Seeing Kylo Ren's Not Revan mask pasted on EVERYTING is pissing me off too and I don't know anything about him yet.

Seeing as Disney have apparently stumbled upon some sort of esoteric secret that lets them get away with yearly released for MCU, im willing to bet they can get away with it for Star Wars too.

I don't think we'll be seeing the main trilogy movies on the same schedule. Yes, the current trilogy has a 2-year cycle per movie, but once episode IX hits in 2019 we'll probably see a break of a few years in the main trilogy department while they flesh out a new overarching story and sign contracts. As long as they keep the spin off movies in their own separate teams I'm fine with them being released on a yearly basis.

Really this seems the only way they can really go without running the franchise into the ground. The question of whether or not they will is another matter.

I know you're all eager to take your new multi-billion dollar franchise out for a test ride, and all, Mousehouse, but howzabout you see if you can make one movie, first?

This is not unlike Warner Bros contemplating when they'll make the Wonder Twins movie.

Now, I can imagine this working with, as it was explained, a numbered entry, and then a side entry, off an on for, oh I'd say until this trilogy is completed(So, 3 main entries, and two sides). But after that I would think a break necessary, or face burn out shortly after. A 2-3 year gap at least.
Hell, I'd rather they give something like a five on, five off type of deal, and just spend the five off with, as someone suggested, a detective style story in the bowels of coruscant, but as a TV series.

Is anyone really surprised?

What will actually surprise me if all the Star Wars fans actually don't bother going to these movies instead of routinely giving Disney their money and wondering why they never listen to their complaints.

It's their IP now,so it's literally their business. I'll keep watching them as long as they're good. As soon as they make a shitty one I'll stop watching. It hasn't happened yet with MCU so they have that going for them at least. Tickets are $10. It's not like they're asking $60 + season pass like yearly video game releases. It's fine.
