DOOM Finally Gets a Release Date of May 13

After years of uncertainty and even starting over again, DOOM finally has a release date. And it's May 13 of this year.

After departures [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/123065-Rumor-Doom-4-Development-On-Shaky-Ground] from developer id Software during development, DOOM (formerly Doom 4) finally has a release date of May 13 of this year.

After seeing the game at E3 last year, we knew the game was going to be bloody and violent [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/video-games/conferences/e3-2015/14193-DOOM-E3-2015-Trailer-Violent-Bloody-Perfect], a staple for the franchise. The video released with today's announcement appears that little has changed since last year.

In addition to the main game, which will hit PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, Bethesda announced a collector's edition, complete with metal case and a 12"-tall statue of the Revenant mounted on an LED-lit base with internal, slow-spinning turbine from the UAC facility on Mars. It's only $119.99, and is available for pre-order through most retail game distributors.

Pre-ordering the game or the collector's edition will also grant you a Demon Multiplayer Pack, which contains "a unique demon armor set with three skin variations, six metallic paint colors and three id logo patterns that can be applied to weapons and armor, plus a set of six Hack Modules - one-time consumable items that can give you an edge in a multiplayer match."

DOOM will also support mods created through the new SnapMap editor being released with it, but not through third-party modding.

That timing.

Battleborn releases 10 days beforehand and I'm looking forward to both games. Oh well, guess Doom 4 will have to wait.

You know... I still have not gotten my early access code, due to pre-ordering Wolfenstein.

I almost never fall for pre-ordering, and I guess this reinforces my doctrine on the matter. :p

The graphics engine looks fantastic, I do look forward to games that will be using the engine. Also the monster contrast vs environment, based on the pictures they appear to blend in quite a bit. If the mod support is good maybe there will be some tweaks for that. The paid for combat boosters is an eyebrow raiser. I wonder if they intend to be selling booster packs for the multiplayer games?

Beta still hasn't happened yet. Last closed alpha session was somewhere in November. Wolfenstein codes haven't released yet because the promised Beta still hasn't been scheduled.

I'm really curious as to how powerful SnapMap will be in practice, and how usable it is. LittleBigPlanet was insane, but wasn't terribly easy to get going. Anyway, I'm pretty excited for DOOM, terrible cover art aside.

It's funny... the amount of violence that you can perform in the last clip, if that's any indication of game play, actually turns me off. What the hell is wrong with me? Hmmm... I was cooler with the impartiality and casual coldness of shooting them from a distance, or the less detailed berserking and chainsawing as in the originals... I guess I'm a bigger fan of monsters doing more monstrous things than the protagonists.

We'll see where this thing goes, however, those MP power boosts... Really, Bethesda? Ah well.

Why do I keep getting a Colonial Marines stink from this game? Maybe I'm cynical, but I'm guessing the actual game will be nothing like the trailers show it to be.

I dunno, CM took six years and a whole console generation to come out, it was a storm of suck from before announcement.

This one, I expect it'll be much slower paced than Doom should be. But beyond that I expect it to be pretty solid, although paid boosts is a real stinker.

Its trying too hard to be Brutal Doom with the attitude, and thats weird since Brutal Doom is not really Doom. Its like someone made a fan movie of a popular movie series and the new official sequel followed that fan movie instead.

In regards to the actual gameplay it looks too stiff and slow, even in here where the clips are chopped off to make it look more dynamic. The executions really dont help (although if they are very optional like in Serious Sam 3 then it doesnt matter much outside of the use of the chainsaw)

That reminded me to go put my code in on PS4 (the Doom beta code was in an insert in the case). It lets me download an alpha, not sure if it works yet, I'll update later

Excellent. Doom will probably be discounted around Holiday time so I could possibly get it then...but I feel like this is the dozenth game on the PS4 that I've said that about since 2013...Still, the game looks promising...gibbing, monster in-fighting and...oh...Damn, that's one Doomed Space Marine. Hopefully melee attacks aren't all pre-baked like that though. They look neat now but after pulling out the 12-millionth Beholder's eye it might get stale. Possibly.

So what exactly are these "Hack Modules" and what do they do? I honestly don't mind them being a pre-order bonus that much, but the idea of them being sold later down the line seems like a valid concern.
If they're going to add this kind of bullshit in the least they could do is be transparent about it and confirm ahead of time whether they'll be sold separately, since this is likely to be a major concern many customers will have. But I guess if the answer is "yes" then they have some concerns of their own about being transparent.

I am just concerned, because in the case of Bethesda games, the last few months before release, are entirely dedicated towards manufacturing and shipping prep. I am seeing very little window for the game still being in beta, because this close to release, the game should be finished.

Maybe this game is an exception to the rule. If so, I will be greatly looking forward to playtesting the game.

Well, as someone who made a third-party Mod for Doom 3, this is actually a little disappointing.
It's a no deal for me, a sale title, especially with Brutal Doom still receiving regular updates and a new release of the Misery Mod around the corner.

Someone else is reading my mind. It feels like they are trying to balance the slower pace of Doom 3 and something a little more manic but not nearly vanilla Doom level gameplay. An uncoordinated union of old and new that just does not sit right with me.

P.S. Brutal Doom is inspire in part by the Doom comic which was over the top and aside from aesthetics had nothing to do with the game.

This has some longer sequences from the multiplayer levels, which seem to be decently fast, even if not as much as Quake/original Dooms.
I think they're trying to make the MP distinct from Quake 3, since it's playable on modern systems with QuakeLive. I also remember reading that executions will be faster ways to get health/items, but enemies can still be dealt with at a distance - almost like an always present 40K Space Marine rage mode. Executions in Multi appear to be forced, but only when meleeing an enemy at low (like <25) health. And from what I've heard from friends who tried the alpha, they're fast enough to not be in the way, and rare enough to be satisfying. You don't kill enemies often enough in melee for it to be overdone.

All that said, the balance in single player could force executions, which would suck. Here's hoping for more classic map design with health and weapon pickups instead of hiding them inside big enemies.
