Recently a 14 year old girl shared naked pictures of herself on myspace. She faces criminal charges of distributing child pornography, and if sentenced could have to register as a sex offender.

Full Story here: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=102386952

My question is this: with all of the amatuer porn coming out of places like the -chans and other unmoderated sites could children become the next target for the crack-down on child pornography?

Another thing that concerns me is the amazing lack of technical information the prosecutors seem to have in the matter. They say "We're only going to charge the people who downloaded the pictures, not the people who accidentally viewed them." but unless you have your browser set not to cache pictures, you could already be guilty in their eyes if you've ever gone on a site where the age of the participants may be in question.

Really thats just disturbing.

Inform the girl of the legal ramifications of her actions, and get her a therapist.

I suppose its good to see them taking some action against this sort of stuff, just the way they are going about it seems to be odd.

What? I can kind of understand where they're coming from... but she's a minor. I suppose the police simply want to oppress this sort of idea all together, lest it become a new way for pedophiles to distribute their filth.

It is not a crime to view the photos, Maer said, but it is illegal to download them.
Okay this just shows how f***ed up the world really is. Come on its a 14 year old girl for crying out loud. She can use the excuse "It was to show my boyfriend" but HELLO, WAKE UP there 14!! this is so plainly wrong

Kinda silly really, she is 14 and she gets put as a sex offender? Wow talk about touchy, if anything put as a warning, not something that is going to effect her for the rest of her life.

The police REALLY need to be focusing on the recent migrations of pornographers to social sites like Myspace, Bebo and Facebook. Seriously, it ticks me off so much when a would-be porn star adds me as a "friend."

But yeah, this girl should be reported to her parents, who should take care of her punishment.

It's an interesting little mess.
On one hand, prosecuting the poor stupid girl will show that it doesn't matter who you are, if you host or distribute underage pictures then you'll be prosectured no matter what. Possibly helping a little to reduce the kind of thing in the long term.

But in the real world prosecuting her and registering her as a sex offender is just stupid. I'm not sure what should happen but her parents need to be shot and her boyfriend too.

I hate to sound all conservative here, but...

Considering the oversexualization the media puts out, its to be expected. We are living in the age of sex, drugs, and guns, these are the things currently driving our society.

Where I live, she'd have had a kid or two by now, and people would have labeled that 'normal.' Maybe even 'she's doing good for herself. Only two kids at that age.'

I grew up in a bad neighborhood T_T

She deserves whatever she gets really, i mean if your 14 and publishing naked photos of yourself you are indeed a f*cking idiot and she deserves to be punished for acting in such a dumb way.

Same principle as a drunk driver who's never done it before, and decides to try it out one night, he deserves everything he gets because its really freaking stupid.

I just hope they make an example of her and really wail on her legally, so that other stupid kids will be detered for doing the same, cause i would really want to be able to surf the internet safer and Not have to worry about naked 15 year olds showing off their new boobs.

Take "Bilddagboken" for example, a swedish site where i share photos and talk to friends and such, there i can see what photos other people upload all day long, and there are some really desperate kids here in sweden, i've seen 15 year olds take photos having sex with older men, i've seen 14 year olds take photo of their vag...And its freaking sick, i dont want to have to worry about seeing child pornography everywhere i go, so they really should add more police to this issue, cause child pornography is a serious issue with all the pedo's around, that and its freaking gross.

"Unfortunately, youths don't have the same judgement as adults, and often, adults don't have the same technical savvy as the youth,"

Good point

I would have understood it if she posted photos of someone else, but it seems a little harsh that she will be convicted as a sex offender because she posted naked photos of herself..

Hah! That's where unfettered liberty gets us as a society! Hate to sound triumphant here but sexual liberation isn't always a good thing! Like any other kind of liberty, it has bad side effects

It's funny that Myspace aren't being called into question. Do they not have filters like other social networking sites to block this sort of thing from happening?
