Something like that happened recently in Vienna. A 14-year old girl killed her mother with a knife because she had forbidden her to surf the Internet.

Holy shit, this article scared the hell out of me... that is until I noticed the kid was in Russia, weird... Either way I'm hiding all the blunt and pointy objects in a locked cabinet from now on.

In addition to what everyone else has already said, I have a couple questions:

1) Why did the parents wait an entire week before taking the keyboard away? Surely even 24 solid hours would be cause for concern.

2) Where did the kid get a sledgehammer? That isn't exactly a common household object.
I have a sledgehammer.

And I dont think it is possible to play for 24 hours straight, but if he did, that might explain his crazyness

Holy shit, guys. I mean what is wrong with the world? Are we honestly at the point where you need to have some sort of license to game?

Don't get me wrong, this kid wasn't "driven to kill by video games", but the fact is that a lunatic kid just murdered someone over a game. Not, he murdered someone and also played video games like we usually get. He did it, over a game. Sure, if the Dad had taken away his skateboard or cupcakes or whatever it surely would have gone the same way....

But this kind of press is going to raise hell, and the whole industry is going to suffer.

This kid needs help, but he has made a serious mistake, not sure what to think about this "not old enough to be charged with murder" thing.

Perhaps it's for the best? But the kid is clearly unstable and needs all the help available.

Sorry old man, did you not know that your son would kill you for being a parent?

...I will say him getting his computer back and him becoming docile is kind of odd...you'd think the adrenaline he likely had would cause him to do more.

This is the part that pisses me off, because somebody ACTUALLY got killed because of video games, so now this will be used as fuel for any other situation even remotely related to games.

You misread it. Under Russian law he is old enough to be charged with murder.

On another note, what was he doing? I didn't see it mention he was gaming, just that he was at his computer.

I agree with point 1. I disagree with point 2.

I have a sledgehammer in my house. It's used atleast once a month for various projects/repairs.

OT: Jesus, That kid had some serious issues.

Some more detail would be nice. He didn't sleep for a week? That would make most people psychotic right there. Why did the kid kill the father rather than just steal the keyboard back? Sounds like there are some major pieces missing in this story.

So many of these stories pop up, you just have to accept that murders happen, and statistically some of them will always be gamers, and find amusement you can.

I think it's pretty fucked up that the kid returned to the game after the kill, it's one thing to kill him and go "oh SHIT! what the FUCK DID I JUST DO!!!" but it sounds like he just went right back to the game

he needs to be in a mental institution rather than a prison, if he just went back to the computer after brutally murdering his father, continueing as if nothing interupted his schedual, but it makes me wonder did his mom just leave his dads beaten bloody corpse on the ground as she crept away to call for help from relatives or what, and didn't anyone else hear what was going on inside the house? I could imagine there'd be a lot of screaming

Woah holy crap thats scary. I mean part of me wonders if the mom was cowering in the corner and then crept around while he was sleeping in fear of the little demon or something, and called relatives. Me personally, I'd probably have backhanded the little kid into the next room if it had been my fictional son killing my fictional wife.

I mean seriously, thats just wrong. The part that disturbs me more isn't that he killed his father, but that afterwards he went back and sat down at his desk and played his games until he went to sleep. Thats one screwed up, scary little kid.

One of these pops up every other week on The Escapist I swear. At this point I really don't give a damn if people blame video games or not, its not on my mind when reading these articles since I apparently care more for the family of the deceased than my entertainment games, my heart goes out to those who have lost their lives in these tragic incidents.
