Fallout 4 Xbox One Mods "Stolen" From PC Modders

//cdn.themis-media.com/media/global/images/library/deriv/1327/1327499.jpg
Some Fallout 4 PC modders are finding their work stolen and re-uploaded to the Xbox One mod database.

Fallout 4 mods have been live on the Xbox One version of the game [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/167573-Fallout-4-Mods-Now-Live-on-Xbox-One] for a week now, marking a first for the series. While no-one can argue that expanding mods to console gamers is a good thing, what isn't a good thing is when unscrupulous types simple steal content from PC mods and re-upload it as their own work on the Xbox One version, which is something that is reportedly happening.

Modders are taking to reddit [https://www.reddit.com/r/pcmasterrace/comments/4m82ix/console_modders_stealing_pc_mods_and_reuploading/], complaining that people are simply using the Xbox One's mod creation kit to re-create popular mods, without giving proper credit to the original creators. Some of these mod thieves are even trying to profit from the stolen works, by asking for donations.

Bethesda has responded [https://community.bethesda.net/message/125193#125193] to the controversy, urging modders report stolen content as a DMCA violation. "A number of you have reported instances of users uploading Mod content that allegedly does not belong to the Mod creator. We take these reports seriously and want to protect copyright holders and authors of the Mod content shared on Bethesda.net," said the studio in an official statement.

So, keep an eye on the mods you download, and don't donate money to a mod creator unless you are absolutely sure he actually created the mod!

There seems to be a lot more to the story. Namely, for some reason some modders are refusing to port their mods to Xbox One, even though the mods are fully compatible and there is minimal work effort required to do so. So some Xbox folks downloaded the mods and then re-uploaded them to the Xbox library (and they worked perfectly). Now, some of the modders are plotting to start including the script extender in their mods even if it isn't really required, just to block this from happening.

So it really seems like a case of PC Master Race trying to keep the good stuff for themselves for no apparent reason, and a plot to get around that. Add into that all sorts of idiotic name calling and Xbox fans sending death threats and harassing messages to mod makers about getting the mods on Xbox and you have quite a show.

Seriously, if the mods work, what is the point of holding them back from Xbox?

You missed a " after the link to reddit in the code which cut half your article, this is it fixed.

On topic: I'd like to say I'm surprised but...I'm really not. :-\

You ask the author for permission, you give credit for their work. That's how it works. Not even Nexus would tolerate stolen mods.

I think there's an option to donate, not to pay for the mods. That wouldn't make sense, especially since they're free on PC.

I wonder if Bethesda will take similar strict punishment routes with mod re-uploaders, that Blizzard has taken with Overwatch.

So? If they don't want to port then they don't have to. That doesn't make it right for someone to take their work without permission and upload it.

Frankly I don't blame them. With how toxic a vocal minority of the console players are being I wouldn't want to port either. If they are already so hateful and entitled before they get the product I can only imagine how bad it would be when , not if when, something goes wrong and it breaks. Many modders are doing this for fun and my not have the time to support a mod on the consoles.

If this keeps up I would fully support modders using FSKE/SSKE/Etc. as drm.

Why should a 'toxic vocal minority' keep the rest of the sane people who want good mods on their console from getting them? 'One bad apple ruins the bunch' logic doesn't work when it comes to things that occur over the internet, since anyone could send a 'death threat' to anyone else while pretending to be from a group that their 'victim' supposedly has reason to dislike. The PC modders themselves could just as easily be sending the death threats themselves in order to justify themselves.

If the mods work perfectly well on consoles, then they should very well upload them given Bethesda's desire to reach a certain sort of parity in experience on console and PC. Mods that require KB + M support specifically for their functionality or mods that act as hardware strainers in order to achieve some graphical advantage are understandably absent, but simple cosmetic changes and potentially useful gameplay changes are so trivial that preventing anyone from using them is just asking for someone else to give it out first, and that's a fact. Leave it to PC gamers to find a way to turn their 'fuck you got mine' attitude into a victim status.

Mods are made by PC gamers, for PC gamers. I guess modders just don't see a reason to bother with this. They might also not have an Xbone and don't want to release a mod to a platform they can't test it on.

Once again: so?

No one is entitled to mods. No one "deserves" mods. Mod makers pour hours of their lives into their work, it is their right to decide who gets to use it. If I make a blue box and someone wants a red box I have every right to say: "No, I only want to make blue boxes." In neither instance is the creator obligated to do anything they haven't already done. If console players were paying into a pool that funded the modmakers then they have a leg to argue on, but the fact is they are asking people to do even more work for free. Many of the mod makers may not have the time to test and port the mod.

I read posts by mod makers who fully intend to release on consoles but they were waiting until they had the time to test. After this fiasco they are less inclined to bother with it. I don't blame them.

As far as the mods working well: maybe they do now, but there is no guarantee that something won't crop up later. While I do not know your background I have one in game design and I know many programmers. Stuff breaks even when there is no logical reason for it. Mod A may work fine and dandy on its own but breaks when mod B is added. That makes more work for the mod makers that they may not want to deal with.

Frankly if console players want mods and the mod makers can't or won't make them then they should get the mod tools and make them themselves.

Oh and for the whole bad apples thing: welcome to the real world. This bull happens all the time. the bad apples shouldn't spoil it for everyone but they always do. This is no exception.

SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH-ocking

This is like the phone game market it seems, Bethesda really should have done something with mod nexus and maybe some other site to verify mods being uploaded.

It says that they're asking for donations, which is common among people putting their work out for free, including in the PC mod scene.

A rare case where the DMCA isn't full of shit and helps the little guy.

Also bonus points to you Steven for that image.

Also most of the console thieves don't know what they are doing and when stolen mods not designed for console cause corrupt saves and crashing on the consoles the real mod creator is taking the flak for it. Don't blame mod creators for not wanting to deal with the console crowd.

To brings some laughs to this, remember all PC modders are cheaters.

The way I see it is that if someone wants to cheat in a singleplayer game they should have the right to do so. Cheating in singleplayer effects no one but the person playing it. Cheating in multiplayer however is a scummy thing to do.

Yeah yeah, it's not right to take something without somebody's permission, whatever. The question is, why wouldn't they give permission? It's a fuckin' mod. If a mod can work on a console why wouldn't they let console gamers enjoy the freakin' mod as well? This tribal mentality and delusions of superiority that some PC gamers have is pathetic.

Not to mention that porting a fuckin' mod is not some kind of copyright infringement. Modders don't actually have any rights to their mods. It's just tradition and a sense of decency that usually prevents people from stealing mods.

This is purely Bethesda's good will to treat modders as original content creators with actual rights to their mods. But legally those rights don't exist. And where's the sense of decency in not allowing your mods to be used by console gamers just because you think they're somehow inferior to you? Fuck those guys.

Because by giving permission you're sanctioning an effort and the quality of the port reflects on you. This means if the person you give permission to does a bad job, either technically or just doesn't support it you get the flack for another persons shoddy job. Posts above suggest that stolen mods that are ported are resulting in this, who'd want to add legitimacy.

Sure some modders may be refusing just to spite people but many realise that even vetting a porter to ensure they are competent to do the job is a lot of work, and if they lack a xbox one then they can't even QA themselves.

And unless they've agreed to something that says otherwise a creators work is always their own (as an employee you tend not to get any, contractors/freelancers usually agree in advance if they do or don't) copyright and MODs are included, not charging has many reasons not least generally other rights being involved.

I figured this would happen. After all where were the mods going from other than the PC version? Who the hell is going to make mods just for the console version? Everyone knows that PC gamers hate console gamers, especially Xbox bros, so it's hardly surpassing that they would not want to share.
