Microsoft's E3 Assets Reveal Bulletstorm Remaster

//cdn.themis-media.com/media/global/images/library/deriv/1329/1329489.jpgA remaster of People Can Fly's 2011 shooter Bulletstorm is apparently in the works.

If you were a fan of the raucous 2011 shooter Bulletstorm, you might find this interesting. Microsoft is apparently working on a remastered version of the game.

At E3 this week, the company is handing out USB drives full of game assets, and on that drive is a folder titled "Bulletstorm Remaster." Within that folder are screenshots, a photo of the original game's cast, and even some 4K shots. The shots were located by Polygon's Nick Robinson [https://twitter.com/Babylonian/status/742636284816986113].

There's been no official announcement yet, so despite the presence of these assets, we'll have to wait and see when this might come to fruition. That said, Bulletstorm was a really fun shooter, so it's nice to see that it just might be coming back around again. Now that People Can Fly is an independent developer again, maybe they'll get busy on a sequel.

My main complaint with the game was that it was called Bulletstorm and not Dickstorm, as I felt the characters spat out more dick references than bullets.

Wouldn't you prefer a sequel? I didn't play the original, but if they just made a sequel and made the first backwards compatible, Id be more inclined to go play the first to prepare for the second.

Sure, but as I understand the game was originally kind of a failure. At least it didn't sell enough for ea to keep with it. A remaster is a quicker cheaper way to gage consumer interest, plus if it does well it gives them a bigger budget for a sequel. And I really wouldn't mind playing it again but I don't feel like jumping through the hoops to get my disk copy working.

While consoles might not really need a remaster since the game still looks good, the pc version does, at least for functionality. Plus, who knows, maybe they will throw in some extra content.

Hey, instead of a remaster how about we get a sequel that has the main game mechanics polished up a bit and resolves that cliffhanger ending you left us on!

I think a reamaster draws public interest in a cult title. It also keeps the developers in the mind state of what made people like the game instead of doing modern changes that take away from the title doing a sequel nearly 8 years later. A la Mirror's Edge.

Normally, I'd be kind of meh about news like this, but this is a special case. Bulletstorm was a fantastic game that suffered from unreasonably high expectations and I found it to be worth replaying every so often to realize how great it actually is. Except replaying it was also a painful reminder of how terrible gfwl is/was, so even if they literally change nothing else, it will be worth a re-release outside of that pukefest of a game client.

*double smack* No we didn't. They should just patch the PC version to get the GFWL out of it and make a proper sequel.

*BLOCK Counter SMACK* Would you rather have a sequel now, or a better one later with the cash infusion from a remaster?

Wait, what? Bulletstorm? Remaster?

As others have said, a remaster like this is an easy, cheap way to generate interest, particularly for a title that had such poor audience penetration. It also helps since People Can Fly, as far as I know, are not flush with cash, and are still independent. Time 'wasted' on a remaster may just be the price we have to pay to make a sequel happen, and if so, I'm willing to pay it.

I know it's not official yet, so this may just be random bullshit with no backing, but I'm really hoping. Crossing my fingers and toes.

I just played Bulletstorm recently on PC, its perfectly fine and there is no need to do a remaster.

As Ive said on virtually every other remaster of a last gen game, just make it backwards compatible. I guess this is actually partly Sony's fault, though a better system, the PS4 doesn't have backwards compatibility like the Xbox One now does, but I just want to maintain my library, not rebuy it all.

*headbutt* I'd rather have them make a smaller game to finance the Bulletstorm sequel. A five year old game in this day and age doesn't even qualify as old. I played the original around three weeks ago, it looks gorgeous.

Well, as pessimistic as it is... there you are. You don't want to re-buy it. That is something I completely understand, but you can kind of see the problem.

Also, if one googles Bulletstorm now, there are several articles about the potential remaster. Press. If they simply made it backwards compatible, I can almost guarantee that no one would give a shit.

However, after a bit of checking to refresh my memory, I think I've found the issue - While People Can Fly hold the Bulletstorm rights, including sequels and, if the rumors are true, re-releases, they do not, however, appear to control the previous releases, physical or digital. During an interview, they were asked why they hadn't fixed the Steam version (Windows Live bullshit), and their response was that EA has total control over it, though they'd like to fix it themselves.

So my guess is that making the game backwards (Forwards?) compatible would require People Can Fly to play nice with EA and fork over money for the pleasure. I think we can all forgive them for not wanting to do that, all other considerations aside.

Oh boy! This entire generation seems to be turning out Remasters every other week. Always predominantly preferred my PC, but I've consistently owned iterations of consoles since the NES back in the 80's. This generation, I just haven't seen a single title that made me, "OH GODDAMN I NEED!". It's Remaster this and Remake that, which is cool, but it doesn't seem like anything fresh is surfacing. Well into this current generation and a good chunk of the libraries are *&#$*&#^%@ re-issues of titles I already own (sometimes across multiple platforms). My PS3 and 360 gather dust while I've yet to partition any shelf-space space for the One or the PS4.

Here's hoping that this is a nice opportunity for some fresh eyes to take a look at the very solid and entertaining Bulletstorm (2011). As for me, I have no plans to buy a straight-up remaster because I own the original game, it works fine, and buying it again would be fucking stupid.

I'll give it a think if they add some more storymode content, though my guess is that they'll probably plop in a few new Echo (is that what they're called? Been a while) maps and call it a day.
