The movies may have been successful, but so far they haven't lived up to the promise of the setting. I think the biggest issue that it is such a stupid and unbelievable idea and the other is that they don't show anything to explain the setting.
So all crime "up to and including murder" is permitted. But for some reason it is ONLY murder that happens. Why isn't there a load of people and/or kids being sexually assaulted? I mean Sodom and Gamorrah level of hedonism here. Why isn't there looting/arson? Why aren't there tons of thieves profiting from the right to steal anything legally? No, only murder. It's basically a stupid setup for a horror movie where people are killed. I'd like to see a diamond heist where the criminals can steal anything and the law PROTECTS the thieves from legal prosecution.
Don't mistake, I didn't think the films were bad. They were alright. Good 7s I would say. But it's a silly setting that makes no sense. I mean which people, anywhere in the world, would elect a government that legalises killing them? Yes, I'd love for you to make it legal for anyone to kill me and my family with no repercussions, that sounds fun.
I get the idea, they've contrived a reason for people to give in to their "animal nature" without such petty things as the justice system getting in the way. But the movies do a terrible job of portraying it, wasting the idea on a poor horror/thriller.

Am I the only one who thinks he whole premise of the Purge is conceptually stupid?
I've just lambasted the premise, you guys aren't the only ones. The second film does make *an* attempt of one-upping the idea by making it a government ploy to manage population numbers. The net result of the "Purge" is always that poor and/or homeless people are killed in greatest numbers. But I agree it is totally preposterous. No one would elect a government that won't protect them from crime and for a night where all crime is permitted, remarkably only killing seems to happen.
I think you have to suspend disbelief a little more than usual for these films.
