Eidos Exec: People Still See Games as Porn

In fighting for tax breaks for game developers in England, Eidos creative director Ian Livingston has discouragingly claimed that industry outsiders see games "as the red-headed stepchild of the creative industries, one notch up from pornography."

A feature from British publication The Guardian [http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2008/oct/23/games-industry] investigated the ongoing negotiations between industry members and politicians over a tax break proposal [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/83627] for game developers. Eidos, which feels that lower taxes in foreign countries, particularly America which has seen many states drop business taxes [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/83942] on game companies, costs jobs in England, is becoming increasingly irked by England's government.

"In the past six years, half of the independent UK development studios have already closed or been bought by foreign publishers who see more value in our studios and intellectual property than we do ourselves. We'll end up being a work-for-hire nation," complained Livingston. "The inherent intellectual property that is created at those studios will be foreign-owned, and they can move that IP to be produced wherever they want in the world, if it suits them."

Parliament sees the problem, yet is unwilling to change game business policies until they are given substantial proof that the government taxes are causing the industry's pain in the country.

One politician, Liberal Democrat Don Foster, is standing up for the industry, despite self-identifying "I hardly play any games" because he realizes the importance of the jobs created by this newer form of entertainment.

As discussions wage on without conclusion or action, Livingston is running out of ways to emphasize to Parliament just how important gaming has become as a medium.

He stated, "We're still seen as the red-headed stepchild of the creative industries, one notch up from pornography in the eyes of most of the establishment. They forget that half of the world and half of the UK's population play games. Games help define who we are as human beings - they are as important, culturally and socially, as music and films."

Eidos complains about games being seen as low art along the lines of pornography? The Tomb Raider and Kane & Lynch publisher? Really?

How about releasing games that don't rely on blatant T&A or gratuitous violence that'd make Tarantino flinch? Considering the reaction to Kane & Lynch, however, I'd stop complaining about taxes on your profits and just be grateful people are still giving you any money at all.

There is not a British mainstream publisher around that doesn't have offices in Canada due to the government's easy-going outlook and tax breaks when it comes to videogames. I agree somewhat with Livingston, although he is probably not the best role model to be fighting for respect (as Simu points out) or representing the indie studios.

Yeh, and I apologise for the ever-increasing tendency of my government to censor video games.

On topic, it's a shame that video games are seen as such. Though, you can tell how out of touch the government is if they don't see the economic importance of this entertainment industry.

Now thats not fair, Eidos gave us one of my all time favourite games.

But yeah, if we're ever gonna get anywhere with mainstream acceptance, we really need to shut down Team Ninja. That doesn't really have anything that redeems it.

"costs jobs in Englad"?

Englad? What is this strange country?
I'm not sure, I'd have gone with England, but as this article talks about the UK as a whole I'm not even sure that's correct. Seriously though, when one of the UK's most valuable developers, Rockstar North, is based in Scotland, using England as a synonym for the UK is incredibly sloppy. Note: England != UK, and there is no such thing as the 'English government.' While it is true that some legislation will effect England alone (some powers having been devolved to regional parliments in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland), taxation is all controled from Westminster, with the exception of council tax.

- Too many taxes kill burdened industries.
- I require proof of this.

*sigh*

While were at it, I apologize for the tendency of MY government to invade foreign countries, execute the ruling hierarchy and destabilize the region, then spend eight years bawling "WHY DON'T YOU LIKE US!?" That aside...

There's problems like this all over. The film industry is really important in South Carolina (where I live) for instance, but the state government in it's infinite wisdom decided not to pass taxbreaks and incentives for production teams to come here and film. Result?

They all just went the next state over where they did get incentives. Oops. We almost completly lost the Army Wives shoot, but they came back after the writers strike.

And the reasons for it being your favourite game are far more indicative of the problem at hand.
Team Ninja didn't actually make my favourite game; I just found it funny that you defend one company that another poster insulted, and go on to insult another company, which another person would have equal reason to defend.

Though I think it loses something when I have to explain it like that.

I'm still cautiously optimistic. Before too long, people will just get used to games. Just as they got used to every other type of media (fingers crossed).

i think it's kinda fun eidos is complaining, considering the crap they keep churning out, tho they do have a point about not giving breaks and losing jobs

a similar issue came up in our election about the gov giving money to corps, but that's what makes corps want to stay there

Personally, I still love Ninja Gaiden, and only partially because of the T&A and gore, but mostly because of the challenge. But I will admit that some games are little better than porn (Heck, some games ARE porn), but there are also games that are genuine works of art.

That's OK, we know the US can't help it...

Anyways, I didn't think the problem arose for the other types of entertainment as well. Hmm, thanks for the extra info. I suppose that, factoring the new information in, we need to get our politicians' heads examined.
