Sony Admits It "Under-Supported" PSP

Since last year saw some of the greatest software for the PlayStation 3, Sony intends on fixing its past portable mistakes and promises a strong 2009 for the PSP.

God of War: Chains of Olympus and Patapon appeared on the PlaySation Portable last year to rave reviews from critics and gamers alike. Their success was a boon for Sony, but the portable's manufacturer has a major concern: These titles were developed by Sony first-party studios. Where were the third parties?

The answer: On the PlayStation 3, selling millions with Resistance 2, Metal Gear Solid 4 and Grand Theft Auto IV.

Sony senior vice president Ray Maguire assures gamers that Sony, despite having 50 million hardware units sold, recognizes its errors in managing its only handheld machine.

"It was slightly under-supported, mainly because a lot of the energy was going into stuff we're doing for PlayStation 3," Maguire commented to GamesIndustry [http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/sony-admits-it-under-supported-psp]. "There was an added complication in that the UMD model wasn't brilliant for third parties, either."

A lack of software hasn't halted the millions of individuals who purchased the hardware, an audience Sony intends on targeting in partnership with its retailers.

"Retailers are looking at it as well, realizing that they haven't supported it as much as maybe they might have done, and they're also thinking about how we almost reintroduce the PlayStation Portable into the market place, with the confidence that we should have had last year, but didn't," he stated.

Realizing the limitations of using the UMD format for games and dealing with retailers, Maguire expects the PSP's online capabilities to allow for improved digital distribution straight to the hardware, which could potentially receive an upgrade in 2009 [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/89761-Acclaim-PSP2-Is-Real-Could-Come-This-Year].

"My gut feeling though is that people are looking for more snack-type content, and the downloads side of it will increasingly become a bigger part of its future," he said. "It's also something that development can get into at a much, much lower entry cost, and I think we can see this everywhere, whether it be iPhone applications, whether it be mobile phones - there is an appetite for smaller, snack-type games."

Really? I never would have guessed with the fact I haven't bought a new game for it or played it in AGES!

They admitted that they did something wrong? Wow.
Actually they've admitted this particular predicament many times before in many other interviews about the PSP, but I'm to lazy and half-assed to go look for them.

I've seen some of the stuff they're dreaming up, it involves Little Big Planet for the PSP, which I think would work like a dream. It's not graphically demanding, and it would suit a portable well.

The only way I can imagine someone not being able to find a good PSP game is if they have an allergy to JRPGs, TRPGs & puzzle games.
Welcome to the Escapist. Or at least, that certainly seems to be the case. If I mentioned "Class of Heroes" I'm sure at least half the forum members here would have to look it up. Its a game I'm looking forward to, personally.

or just any other genre in general. Well at least 2009 is going to be one hell of a year for the thing with all the announcements just bombarding us. Lookin forward to Tuesday when I can pick me up some of that Resistance Retribution, and all those other games in the coming months.

Funny how it's true, I have not seen much of it but it certainly looks interesting. I really hope Tenchu turns out good though.

Sorry dead thread I know, but I need to say my two cents about this.

Wtf, "Lords of Dog Town" some f'ing ATV off-road game in my psp box? Who the hell do they think plays this thing? I had seen what the system could do so I bought one to play Daxter when it came out, to this date I have that and God of War for it, matter of fact I think I lost the charger in my room at some point I use it so little.

Not enough support for the system? Nonsense sony, keep releasing crappy movies on dvd's for it and I'm sure it will take off as a portable dvd player. bah! I say, BAH!

Didn't that come with the PSP? And I thought it was a skateboarding movie.

Even though the story is kind of old, I can't resist:

"In other breaking news, the sun rose from the east this morning! Oh, and the next DDR game will feature four arrows apparently. Who'd have thought that was going to happen, eh Jim?"

Well, at least they're still trying to make more good games for the thing, if this year's E3 was any indication.

I bought that pack mostly for the 1GB stick. PSPs up to that point only came with 32MB cards. I thought that the game and movie would be at least slightly enjoyable, but they were complete trash. I watched about 20 mins of LoDT before realizing that nothing was ever going to happen in the film besides skating/surfing montages.

Sorry, that was a typo on my part, what I meant to say was that it came with Lords of Dog town AND some f'ing atv off-road game, which I think right now is keeping the short leg of my desk up so it doesn't wobble
