Don't Want to Unlock Skate 2 Extras? Buy 'Em

If you've ever wanted access to all the extra goodies in a game, but found yourself lacking the time to play enough to actually unlock them all, then maybe you'd find Skate 2 interesting - for just $5, you can access all of the game's content immediately [http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/games/offers/0ccf0008-0000-4000-8000-00004541087f].

Let's face it - there have been times when even the most hardcore of gamers have just wanted to get their hands on everything that the game has to offer, right at that very moment. Perhaps you've got friends coming over and they'll want all the options (also known as Super Smash Bros. Brawl Syndrome), perhaps you're just dying to check out that last multiplayer map, or perhaps you're just feeling lazy.

So in a way, giving players the option to just automatically unlock every bit of Skate 2 - new skaters, new locations, new gear - is actually pretty cool. Those who treat the challenge and act of unlocking as its own reward can do it the normal way; those who just want the damn content can pick up the Time is Money Pack for just 400 MS Points. The ones who pay aren't getting anything that someone who prefers to go the old-fashioned route can't ever get their hands on, they're just skipping the hassle.

On the other hand: As CVG's Mike Jackson points out [http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=206548], isn't this what cheat codes are supposed to be for? There have been insta-unlocks in games for years now, but it wasn't until now that someone had the bright idea to start charging for them.

Whether or not you're a fan of pay-to-play DLC, for the most part it's usually completely new content. This is something that's already in the game.

While I applaud EA for recognizing that sometimes people just want to skip the bullhooey, I can't help but worry that this might just be the harbinger of an unfortunate trend to come.

I guess i'm pretty old now, since i remember times when you could unlock all content by entering a secret code, and that was for free...

The Times are a-changin. And by that i mean you have to pay for anything

I don't see this as a totally bad thing, it's actually a nice short cut since sometimes... I'd just like to be able to play every aspect of the game and not have to waste time unlocking everything, as long as these extras don't start being cut from games and offered ONLY as additional, downloadable purchases.

I miss cheat codes...but so long as buying unlocks doesnt get u achievement points for doing so then just gonna have to go with the times I guess. Defeats the points of achievements if u can pay for them though.

Tony hawks 3 had this too. It's called a cheat code (yohomies). It seems EA are now charging for laziness. On the other hand it's a bit like buying bread instead of baking it yourself it saves all the hassle of mixing and cuts straight to the toast.

Man, I enjoyed having cheats being free. If others start charging for use of unlockable cheats, I'm going to be a sad panda. =(

"Not only are we going to make your game shorter, but you're going to pay us for it".

Bit I can also see the point, some games may become stale and boring before you manage to unlock all the stuff, and when you finally do, you're too fed up with the game to get much enjoyment out of them.

I know I've become pretty bored with previous Tony Hawk's games in the past, maybe having all the ability to unlock all the costumes, boards and areas without having to endure the 'story-line', would have extended it's appeal for me, who knows?

I think it's a good option to have for some people, and I'm assuming unlike a cheat code it won't disable achievements.

Wait, so you're opposed to completely new content being sold to you, but you're okay with things that should essentially be a cheat code? Am I reading this wrong? (most likely, since I've been doing that alot)

As for the topic at hand, if someone wants to buy it then fine. I won't/wouldn't waste my money on stuff that I could just earn anyway, but hey, money is money.

Actually, I'd say it's more like buying a bread maker and then paying someone to use it for you. And they're really, REALLY fast at making bread.

If there is one thing EA are really innovative at its milking gamers.

Hmm that makes for a slightly disturbing image.

Though maybe not as directly comparable, you could think of this DLC the same way you think of strategy guides. People are quite comfortable with paying for those and their information is usually available free from other sources (gamefaqs) albeit in a less appetizing package. This DLC is a matter of convenience and I don't think it puts us on a slippery slope.

This is gonna be great, now we'll get an even more annoying subgroup of gamers with crazy amounts of cash who just pay their way into accomplishments
