Call of Duty 4 Boasts at Least 11m Unique Users on XBL

Everyone knows that Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is a supremely popular game, but you might be surprised to know just how popular it really is.

While accepting one of the game's 3 BAFTA Awards [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/90066-BAFTA-Video-Game-Awards-2009] (that's British Academy of Film and Television Arts to us Yanks), Infinity Ward Director of Communications Rob Bowling made a statement announcing the game's milestone 11 million unique players. 11 million players means that a solid two thirds of the 17 million Xbox Live users have played the game at some point.

The 11 million users figure includes Xbox Gold and Silver account members as Microsoft has only roughly 9.5 million paying Gold customers. What the number doesn't include is those without any internet connectivity to their 360s, or no registered Live account, meaning the number of CoD 4 players on Xbox 360 is likely even bigger than 11 million.

This huge figure obviously doesn't include the 4 million players on PSN, or the unspecified number of PC players, bumping the actual number of people who played CoD 4 to far beyond 11 million.

Infinity Ward's take on the Call of Duty franchise has been a huge success on all counts, thanks in part to its combination of fantastic single player campaign, and what's arguably one of the best console multiplayer experiences available.

Before Call of Duty 4 launched, I really don't think anyone expected the game to be this successful. Kudos to Infinity Ward.

Really, though, 11+ million? That's a pretty staggering number, considering that there are only ever 80,000+ people on Multiplayer at a time.

I hope CoD: MW2 does this well.

Not surprisingly, really. COD4 is a great game, and the multiplayer maps are a lot more interesting than those in the Halo games. Not to mention having a great, ever-changing single player campaign.
I played all the way to level 55...then got bored.

Well infinity ward certainly did their jobs well with COD4:MW. It is one of the best FPS games i've ever played.

I just can't wait to get my hands on COD:MW2.

Example? In terms of online shooters? Halo - no. CoD5 - no. CSS - close, but even then not console. TF2 - no. L4D - yes IMHO but v. atypical.

Ive not played kill zone 2 but that will nerver get 11 million players. Looks interesting though, even if ZP didnt rate it, not much he does like.

Ive spent soooo much time on COD 4. Ive not played like that since Quake 2 when I got the gloom and action quake mods. Fun times, shame about the 56k modem.

The one single thing that takes away greatly from "arguably one of the best console multiplayer experiences available" is frag grenades/martyrdom. They make me so mad I wanna eat the dang disk sometimes

Left 4 Dead is certainly better if you like co-operative zombie shooting! Personally I'm not really into real war/WWII shooters but CoD4 is so good it don't matter.

Its part of the game along with last stand, juggernaught, RPGs and Noob tubes. You have equal acess to them, embrace them.

Just dont ask about me taking over kill to get more noob tube rounds...

I hate CS and always have. Not bashing anyone who does like it and it certainly has enough people to prove that for most people it's a great game.

I love CoD4. The single player is easily the most gripping I've ever played and was executed perfectly. The multiplayer is fantastic and after playing it since release I'm still not tired of it because I keep changing what game mode I play and the level I play it at. Easy for me to understand why there have been so many people to buy it.

I agree, WWII is so overused that even if you use a new interface and combat system(like WAW did), the atmosphere and weapons feel old and boring.
