id Teases Doom 4 Details

id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead has teased a few details about what Doom 4 will be like, as well announcements of "new stuff" to come at this year's E3.

In an interview with Gamespot [http://uk.gamespot.com/news/6207773.html] id CEO Todd Hollenshead dropped a few hints about the upcoming Doom 4 as well as some big announcements coming at E3, but don't get your hopes too high: the game's not coming for a good long while.

"It's not preproduction, but we're still early on in that," Hollenshead said. "The team is relatively new. We're still actually hiring people for the team as well, so it's not completely built out. But we really just started on that last year. It's very much deep in development."

Being "deep in development," id's got to have a pretty clear idea what the game's going to be like, right? Hollenshead seems to: "It's not a sequel to Doom 3, but it's not a reboot either. Doom 3 was sort of a reboot. It's a little bit different than those, and if I told you why, I would get my ass kicked when I got back."

So it's going to be different but not different? Hollenshead assured that fans that Doom 4 will still be as Doom as any other game in the series. He's not afraid of fan backlash - which I suppose we should take as a good sign. "Everything I've seen on it is classic Doom, so I don't really have worries that people aren't going to like it and start talking about it," he said.

As for what the company will be showing at E3 (they won't have a booth since they're not in the ESA, but will have games on display at other publishers' displays), all Hollenshead will say is "that we'll have some new stuff at E3 that we haven't announced yet." Apparently id are working with some "partners" on this new stuff and Hollenshead has to talk with them before he says anything, otherwise "that would be another subject of me getting my ass kicked."

Boy are these guys slow on releasing games....And people complain about Valve being slow, iD last game was back in 2005.

Rage is not coming out this year either...

New features: Instead of attacking when you get near the health, enemies now wait until after you've picked it up and turned around to leave and then teleport in behind you! How frightening!

Remember how much you loved holding a flashlight with both hands? Now you can do the same with your weapon's magazines! When you want to reload it's as easy as switching to your mag, picking the weapon you'd like to reload from a fun real-time menu, and then watching the animation play out as the demons take a few nibbles. Don't forget to switch back afterwards!

Also, more darkness!

I hope I'm wrong, but will definitely wait for reviews.

That means it won't be a direct sequel or a reboot. Just another Doom with nothing to do with the old one. Think Farcry 2 (like farcry never happened) yet with fewer added innovations. To be honest I hope Doom doesn't go all GTAIV on us and forget it's roots.

well at least it's better than their excuse for not releasing quake when they wanted to. that time it was "sorry we've been busy playing it"

i will say their games are well worth waiting for, The Carmack is an amazing coder and makes things run well on crap hardware and orgasmicly unbelievable on great hardware

There was so much backlash against that, I think iD is smart enough to give the game a few more lights, and maybe a roll of duct tape or two.

If they have a miraculous return to the old style Doom games then I will be overjoyed beond believe (if it isn't then I shall get a friend to film me doing the Macarena in a pair of speedos and post it on Youtube).

I honestly want a return to the good old fashioned shoot 'em ups where you run around a spooky looking compound and blast everything that doesn't look friendly into multicoloured chunks with a plasma shotgun before knocking Saten out cold with a single, well aimed roundhouse (what the hell happened to them?).

Yeah, I understand the retarded logic behind the idea of a flashlight, but the idea was so it would build suspense. You could only see in the dark while leaving yourself vulnerable, etc.

Doom 3 was a little...eh. Hope 4 can up the ante a little bit.

My simple 3 step plan to make a good new Doom game:

1. Try to replicate the fast pace and feel of Doom 1+2
2. Repeat step 1
3. Have some cake

And by that he meant that it will feel like a combination of slow, dark horror creeping and silly fast-paced monster killing? Even Half Life feels more like a Doom title than Doom 3.

As DOOM as DOOM 1 and 2? Or as 'DOOM' as DOOM 3? Cause there's a VERY big difference between those. Personally I think that the chance that DOOM 4 will surpass the original two games is negligible. But hopefully it will at least be a step up from DOOM 3, or should I say 'Resident Evil In Space'.

No, Dead Space has that honour. This is "REALLY Alone In The Dark, In Space".
