Dragon Age: Origins Originates Oct. 20th

Bioware's upcoming Dragon Age: Origins has a brand new teaser trailer - and a release date: The totally metal RPG will hit store shelves on October 20th.

[gametrailers=49796]

I'm just gonna say it right off the bat: I think Dragon Age is a horrifically generic and bland name. There's no hook to it - if I had to choose a game to play just based on the name? Dragon Age: Origins would be pretty far down the list.

So it's a good thing that what we're seeing of the rest of the game more than makes up for the uninspired name. Sure, it looks like your standard High Fantasy fare, but since when is that necessarily a bad thing? Dragon Age seems to be essentially what you'd get if you took the works of Tolkien and had them rock out to Iron Maiden for a while. And you know what? That's totally fine by me.

Dragon Age will be joining Brütal Legend another heavy metal fantasy (with significantly more emphasis on heavy metal, and less on fantasy) set to release in October. Or should we say Rocktober?

YEEEEAH!
I'm super psyched for Dragon Age. Bioware hasn't disappointed me in the past, and I doubt they will here. October 20th? Red letter day.

That was just pure awesome but i can't shake the felling that the "dark metal" setting is gonna ruin it somewhat. But im still excited about this gonna get it no matter what, it's Bioware after all.

I was initially interested in the game but since I found out they would be marketing it to the consoles most of my hope of this game being a somewhat 'complex' follow up to Baldur's Gate have faded. The absolutely retarded Marylin Manson trailers certainly didn't help.

'This is the new shit'...the irony is staggering.

Iron Maiden?
The riff in the first bit (While that guy's walking) sounded more like If I was your Vampire by Marilyn Manson.

And the second song is definately This is the New Shit by Marilyn Manson (again)
Clever choice for song name there..

Look, dont pay attention to marketing, it's silly. This is a bioware game in a dark fantasy setting. It'll be fun to play, but it's not gonna have heavy metal music blaring in the background in the game. It's going to play like Mass effect/Baldur's gate and it'll have your typical fantasy music.

Interesting marketing choice, but I can see EA wanting this game to try and reach more then the Bioware faithful. If Bioware was still allowed to make the game they wanted and talked about then I still expect this to be an excellent addition to my RPG library.

I have to say that the heavy metal in the trailer has put me off this game somewhat... although not terminally. The fact that it'll be coming out in my first term of uni may be more of a problem though.

In fact, I won't go into it.

Game looks good though, will be worth a try.

Speaking of generic names, the villains are called the DarkSpawn? Really? They couldn't come up with anything more creative than that?

I'm working on the assumption that the whole "mindless violence" angle that the trailers seem to be working from is to bring in a wider audience. Because, for a game that's being proclaimed as the spiritual sequel to Baldur's Gate, that kind of OTT, bloody violence really doesn't fit, in my opinion.

Oh, well. BioWare have always done well in the past, and I expect that trend to continue. I'm very interested in Dragon Age, but I'm still a little sceptical because of the trailers.

I read a preview that said the game is much more RPG than these trailers suggest. They're clearly just trying to get people to buy it for the violence.

Excellent. I don't think false advertising is a good thing, but if more people end up playing BioWare's games as a result of this, then I'm not going to complain.

I'm still really happy that they've gone for the top-down isometric viewpoint they had in Baldur's Gate. I just hope it keeps to the spirit of those games more than the trailers suggest. Although, judging by your comment, Oblivious, I think that will probably be the case.

Well, since it's a Bioware RPG with a dark setting and Bioware's got such a good track record, I think I'll look past the bland name and pick this one up when it comes out. I'm excited already. :)

In a strange why it actually does make sense though. Say your living in a fantasy world and a big group of baddies decided to rise up, burn down your house and attempt to bite your face off. It seems more likely, you are going to call them by a simple descriptive. A name that your average other still face retaining peasant is going to understand, rather than something overly complex.

Funk that is without a doubt the most apt summation of DA i've heard.

I'm going to wait till I see how it all pans out.

Wait, how can you not like the name 'Dragon Age'? Of course, it is bland, unoriginal, boring..but it still tells us this is a game with dragons.

Dragons.

Ok, on a more serious note: every fact I've heard about this game sounds good to me, and so does the gameplay, setting, etc. Pretty much everything. The weird thing is: normally trailers have to get you enthousiastic for a game. But in this case it looks as if the trailers try to scare me off.

Mweh, I suppose it really is a good marketing choice. After all, there is simply no chance a crappy trailer or 2 can scare me away from a Bioware game. And there is indeed a good possibility that it'll attract gamers that wouldn't have bought this game otherwise.
