FTC Shuts Down "Criminal" ISP

For the first time ever, the Federal Trade Commission [http://www.ftc.gov/] has sued and shut down an internet service provider it claimed was a "haven" for criminal activity ranging from identity theft to child pornography.

Moving with unusual speed thanks to a "parallel criminal investigation," the FTC sought and was given a temporary restraining order by a federal judge that shut down the operations of San Jose ISP Pricewert before the company could respond; the judge also ordered anyone providing Pricewert with services like data storage or connectivity to halt those services immediately and without notice.

Although the ISP was based out of San Jose, the FTC said the company was incorporated in Oregon and listed Belize as its base, while all the employees it could track down worked from either Ukraine or Estonia. It also operated under the names 3FN.net and Triple Fiber Network, and apparently connected with clients through ads posted on Russian-language forums specializing in "identity theft and other crime."

The Spamhaus [http://www.missingkids.com/] claimed the company ran at least 17 botnet "command and control" servers. "They are notorious," FTC chairman Jon Leibowitz said yesterday. "Almost anything that you can find that harms consumers on the internet, this ISP was involved in."

While some observers have suggested that the FTC could send a strong message by deputizing Steven Seagal [http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000219/] and having him snap the necks of a few IT guys, the agency indicated that it would not pursue that course of action, opting instead to freeze Pricewert's assets pending a preliminary injunction hearing scheduled for June 15.

This won't necessarily stop them completely, but frankly it's about time there was proactive action taken against a provider like this. It's scary to think of an actual ISP being behind such a criminal act. Usually I think of just a website or somebody with some email accounts.
I can see Steven Seagal doing a movie like this, though of course the true story of the takedown would be plenty boring.

A step in the right direction perhaps, but I can't help but wonder if this will further develop into some serious power abuse. I guess a little cleaning up of the internet can't hurt, though it seems like an awfully futile job.

I'm really glad that they stepped up and took down this ISP. Child porn has no place in our world.

No, 4chan bans people for CP, so the party van doesn't show up too often.

I'm upset that we don't get cheesey Segal action.

How about the jail?
That's for the child pornographers(hopefully getting karmic justice). The actual pictures don't belong either.

I don't know why, but it makes me feel uncomfortable that you used an acronym for child pornography.
I don't like typing realy long words, like misunderstood, so I use abv. when I don't want to type them. This usually happens when it's late and I'm tired.

Why does tis bother you anyway?

Lies! Lies and deceit.
You would know this from personal experience? They had to do this so the party van wouldn't shut them down for good. It's sort of like the ESRB that way.

It may seem futile, but some effort is better than none. Might make others think twice before doing this crap in another isp in the US. Guess it will all funnel somewhere. Wonder where?

Say what you will, but I see child photography on /b/ regularly. I hardly ever see people getting banned for it, seen people banned for saying 'cracker' but not for posting CP.

for spam, yeah that's a pretty apt description. when they closed down McColo the same thing happen cept they had enough time to pull everything out first

i mean it's pretty easy to deny traffic from a lot of insecure proxies that would curb the amount of spam AND it would cause a lot of admins to fix their broken systems

I can't help but feel this is an ill omen, while file sharing is a far cry from kiddie porn in the legal world that gap isn't as big if someone goes on a crusade against file sharing. All one would have to do is convince a judge a website host is a "haven for criminals" and the whole damn thing could be shut down.

Granted it sounds like this particular host seems have catered specifically to criminals and should rightly be shut down. I'm sure there's more of an argument here, but I just woke up and complex thought won't be clocking in until 10am.

Although it could lead to power abuse, for now it is simply just setting standards.

Maybe it's the mods posting it. The mods there are really weird and more inconsistentthan the ones here. I haven't been to 4chan lately, though, so things may have chainged.

Also, are you sure it's CP, and not just anime with people that only look young? (i.e. Lucky Star. I got really creeped out when I learned they were in high school)
