NPD: More Female Gamers In 2009

Female gamers are on the rise this year compared to last, according to a new study by the NPD Group, and it's not just the Wii that they're playing.

Well, it's mostly the Wii that they're playing. The NPD's Gamer Segmentation 2009 report, which tracks activity across several categories of gamers, found that females increased by five percent in the category of Console Gamers, increasing from 23 percent to 28 percent in 2009. At the same time, usage of the Wii increased by 19 percent from last year, which the NPD sees as underscoring "the finding that more females are using console systems, especially the Wii."

The percentage of females increased in other categories as well, moving up by four percentage points in the Heavy Portable and Extreme Gamers categories. The growth of the console demographic, however, is the most significant, the NPD thinks.

"Last year was one of the most transformative in history in terms of defining the audience for gaming, said Anita Frazier, analyst at the NPD. "Even with the increased competition from mobile and social network gaming, the console gamer segment added the most new participants to its ranks in the last year."

So what's an Extreme Gamer, you ask? It's got nothing to do with whether or not you skateboard or listen to noisy music - apparently someone who plays an average of 39 hours a week qualifies as Extreme. These people, the NPD says, buy more games than any other category of gamer (despite having the lowest income), but actually have very little impact on the industry as a whole, since they only make up four percent of total gamers. Hate to break it to you guys, but I guess you're not so extreme after all.

Well, that's not really that important, since as gaming become mainstream more and more layers of the populations will obviously become gamers, until its use becomes more or less homogenous by the time it's not considered a novelty any more. Also, why can't I find any of those gamer girls, I mean, seriously.

Lol. Extreme? 39 hours? Not anymore.

But I used to do that... When you just play 12 hour sessions or longer, and don't really take much in the way of breaks inbetween... Yeah. It's possible. >.<

Interesting overall trend though.

Only 39 hours a week?
There are 168 hours in a week, so that's about 23% of their time, including sleeping.

I suppose it's not surprising they only make up 4% of total gamers, 39 hours a week pretty much means they don't have a full time job. Which would also explain having the lowest income.

So the punchline of this article is that now our wii-waggling jokes should include girls? =)

Because you don't live where I live. I am friends with several girls who play anything from pokemon to SSB to Halo. Their not that hard o find, but if you want to get a girl to play the games you like, then you have star off with something that doesn't require you to use every single button on the controller.

I'm a gamer girl. Granted I don't play every single hour upon hour but I do love to play video games to relax and gear down from a long day. It's always full of fun times.

I'm lucky enough to not have any girl gamers as friends that could get a real kill in any given game, much less beat me.

My friend's ex once tried COD 4 and never once touched the right stick. Guess which way her K-D ratio swung?

Five and a half hours a day is "long"? Whoo-boy, you must have one of those "job" thingies.

Gamer Girls existed before this, they were just very very good at hiding themselves. Like Ninjas, only better.
