A Hip Hop Game, Minus the Thug Life

A game that celebrates hip hop culture but doesn't revolve around violence isn't just possible, according to Heatwave Interactive, it's coming.

But most modern rap lyrics involve; drugs, guns, women and gang culture (yes I know some don't but they are the minority) what will the in-game people sing about. Also T.I? I couldn't pick someone less deserving of a Grammy/video game guest appearance (except maybe Mr. Cent).

Although to be honest putting some more positive messages in a rap/hip hop game isn't the worst idea (much better the the aformentioned Mr . Cent blowing up the middle east for a skull, which is just what the delicate situation over there needed) but I don't see it being very successful. Also trying to break into the MMORPG market is hard enough but to do it with an idea with this just seems to playing it a bit to dangerous

yea, it might be a nice fantasy to have violence free hip-hop, but people in reality know what version has the appeal.

Otherwise, you're just listening to Will Smith. Makes about as much sense as christian metal

SEEENT DOWN FROM HEAVEN, SPIIIRIT AND THE LOOORD!!! \m/

Actually, I have to agree. The only group that used rap and it wasn't about violence was Black Eyed Peas. And maybe Gorillaz, out of all groups I know.

An MMORPG? I sincerely hope that's just a typo. I could easily see this being a single-player RPG, and if so then they've got an interesting idea going there. But an MMO? I really couldn't see it working, not without significantly deviating from the MMO patterns people have come to expect - which, in itself, wouldn't be a bad thing, but without some level of familiarity a lot of people wouldn't even try it.

In either case, it brings to mind some of those weird Japan-only Saturn games (I'm particularly thinking of that Soccer RPG), and we need to see more games with this sort of mindset. Here's hoping it doesn't disappoint.

So it's...basically a game with really bad music?
Also, are they going to gloss over the drug use which practically every performer ever has indulged in?
I mean, that's something genre-spanning: Cocaine.
Doesn't matter if you're singing about bitches and ho's or how you accidentally ran down your dog with your John Deere, everyoen does coke.

Maybe this is a way to bring the music industry together...
But, what is a rapper's life without his story of shooting someone? I thought their goal in life is to become "gangsta". And, I would much rather have battles in Gurubashi Arena then Rap Battles in some bar's basement. It will end up like a more serious version of Parappa the Rappa, except not as weird.

Once 50 cent joins the project, the whole thing will take a completely different direction...

Yay! Yet more close-mindedness, I thought all I was going to get was from the guys over on the DJ hero thread...

The majority of mainstream Rap is what's known as Gangsta Rap, which yes, is largely concerned with guns, bitches and bling. Gangsta Rap is to Rap as Black Metal is to metal. Just one take on a HUGE genre.

Max... You might think rap is rubbish, I respect your view. I happen to think that the majority of metal is rubbish, and could be made better by turning the distortion down and singing instead of screaming. The difference between you and me, however, is that I didn't reject Guitar Hero and Rock Band out of hand. I listened to some of the tracks, and actually learned to appreciate the technical skill that some metal songs take.

And of course, paintball games outsell shoot-em-ups by what ratio now days? 5:1? 10:1? My point is, why suggest that the only non-violent rapper releasing records is Will Smith? Pretty much the first line on Lupe Fiasco's first album is
"I ain't tryin' to be the greatest-
I used to hate hip-hop. Why?
Because the women degraded
but Too $hort made me laugh
like a hypocrite, I played it
a hypocrite I stated
but I only recited half"
Seriously... Before you leap on the "lololololol rap iz shit coz its all gangstarz", take a step back and listen to some of the decent stuff. If anyone wants some pointers, I'd be happy to send them.

Sadly, the Wu-Tang Clan won't be taking part. I'll be in the corner guys.

Okay, that's not as bad as most, but I still can't understand a word he's saying, which is another problem I have with rap.
Though it's less due to slang and more due to the accent, I imagine.
Which one did you listen to? try "H", that one has a British rapper, might be easier to understand.

IMHO the lyrics are easier to understand than your average metal song as far as I can hear. Not to say that it's all screaming, but they seem to take too much of a back seat to the point where I can't really hear what they are saying. And that song, is one of many more that don't involve 'bitches guns and money'.

That being said Maxwell, what type of musics appeal to you?

Meh, You would be surprised. Hip Hop is huge. Gangsta rap isn't the most minor subgenre, in fact it's a big one, but the rest of the genre dwarfs it. Hell the underground hip hop scene dwarfs it. But it's underground, you'll never hear any of it on t.v. or mainstream media, that's just the way it is.

Cool story brah. You should do an article, based on your knowledge of hip-hop music, it would be awesome. And if you did some research before you trolled, you would know that they claim to be 'gangsta' before their hip hop careers even start.

Either way, T.I. is hardly deserving of such a thing IMHO.

What do you mean "that" song? You make it sound like there's only one song there.

Well, the Asheru track that first popped up as you click the link. And you spoke of British Rappers? We may have quite a lot to talk about. ;¬)

trust me, I'm not the biggest hip-hop fan, and certainly not of British hip-hop , the only one I know of is dan le sac vs scrubious pip, and one of their songs is under the letter h.
