Couple Gets Married Beneath Life-Size Gundam

What's the only thing better than marrying your soulmate? Marrying your soulmate with a ceremony involving a 60-foot-tall giant robot.

We here at The Escapist have been dutifully bringing you all the news about the since construction started [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/92322-Japan-Finishes-Life-Size-Gundam] back in March, partly because we feel that we have a duty to inform the world about Japan's secret military projects hidden in plain sight, and partly because it's awesome.

To celebrate the final days of the Gundam statue before it gets torn down and moved to a military base where it will be made fully functional, one lucky couple was chosen from over 500 applicants to tie the knot beneath the behemoth giant robot. In a ceremony held yesterday, in front of thousands of onlookers, tie the knot they did.

Fittingly enough, the groom was dressed as Amuro Ray, the protagonist of the first Mobile Suit Gundam, though his bride-to-be was wearing a boring plain wedding dress instead of getting dolled up to match. Perhaps that's for the best, though, given the notoriously low survivability rate for pilot love interests throughout the Gundam metaseries. This isn't to say that the lucky lady didn't share her new husband's enthusiasm, though - they named their baby daughter Seira, after Sayla Mass [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sayla_Mass].

Apparently, merely getting the opportunity to say one's vows beneath a giant robot wasn't good enough on its own, as a surprise visitor came to wish the newlyweds well - Gundam creator Yoshiyuki Tomino, bearing framed and signed artwork of the good ol' RX-78-2 as a gift.

While this may seem a bit strange at first, consider that Gundam is as iconic and influential in Japanese pop culture as, say, the Star Wars trilogy is in the West - with Char Aznable as immediately recognizable over there as Darth Vader would be over here. Now imagine a couple here in the States (or in Canada or the UK, wherever you please) having a Star Wars-themed wedding. Still a bit nerdy, but not unthinkable, right?

We here at The Escapist wish the couple well, and wish them the best of luck in freeing their souls weighed down by Earth's gravity in order to become Newtypes, the next evolution of humanity (in space).

See a full gallery of pictures from the ceremony here [http://shibuya246.com/2009/08/26/odaiba-gundam-wedding/].

Can we trade then? Gundum sounds much more awesome then Star Wars. I'd rather have people obsessed about giant fighting robots then Star Wars.

Isn't "life-sized" a bit of a misnomer? Since that's one of the only ones to exist in real life, no matter how big it was, it would still be "life-sized".

As for the ceremony...to each their own I guess. But in 10 or 20 years, I bet they'll look back and ask "what were we thinking?"

Rather, it is a 1:1 scale to how big the Gundam is supposed to be, as opposed to the 1:144 or 1:100 scale models.

I would think they mean it's 1:1 scale with the fictional machine. Otherwise wouldn't the models be "life sized" by your definition if there was only one? Or something.

I'm waiting for when they build Wing Zero Custom and Tallgeese III. Deathscythe Hell wouldn't be too bad either. (If you couldn't tell, I have a thing for Gundam Wing's machines)

Tallgeese III, word up.

I loved all of the OZ suits, but the Wing Gundams have never really done it for me. I much prefer Gundams from UC/CE/AD, personally.

It's only a matter of time before people start dancing around it singing songs and performing crazy fertility rituals where they sacrifice foreigners and live stock.

The creator came too? Nice.

When they make a DeathScythe Gundam, I'll book my wedding under that.
Now the regular Deathsythe [http://www.staats.us/sonle/gw_deathscythe.jpg], Deathsythe Hell [http://www.staats.us/sonle/gw_d_hell3.jpg], or Deathsythe Hell Custom [http://members.fortunecity.com/heero195/wallpaper51.jpg]?

If anything I'd want mine under the MS-07 B3 Gouf Custom [http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u205/tallgeese2/Gundam/_111.jpg].

I like ones from the other series too, but it's never really more than one per show, if that.

I'd also take the EZ-8 from 08th MS Team (one of my favorite series), Nu Gundam, possibly Blitz from SEED, and definitely Exia because I like swords.

I'd prefer a Zeta Gundam personally, or your basic Astray cannon fodder frame, but hell I'll be damned if that's not made of at least 7 kinds of win right there. You can't get much more iconic than the RX-78-2.

Aww, I forgot the Gouf Custom. Was too caught up in listing actual Gundams (and Tallgeese III).

Norris Packard: most badass character in all Gundam continuities.

I'd have to go with the Nu, Freedom, Exia, Strike Noir, or the Kampfer, myself.

Deathscythe Hell. I think it was too much after that. Looks better than the Tallgeese though. Amirite Funk? Amirite?

I hope the couple are happy, but a question just appeared in my mind.

What the hell is that statue made of? Metal? Plastic? Ceramite Armour Plating?
