Dark Void's Pre-Order Bonus Changes the Game

Dark Void's pre-order bonus item seems like it drastically changes the gameplay more than any other bonus in recent memory.

Pre-order bonus items are sometimes pure vanity - Gears of War 2's golden Hammerburst comes to mind - and sometimes they actually do change the way the game in question is played. Dark Void's pre-order bonus item deal with GameStop seems to actually be something of both, and possibly quite a bit of the latter.

When you plunk down a deposit for Dark Void at GameStop, you'll earn access to a golden jetpack which not only looks cool (though I think it's a tad garish), but also grants you unlimited boost in-game. While we're not completely clear on the specifics here, if we take the word of the advertising, this item gives you "unlimited turbo boost and special moves" and makes you an " unstoppable master of the skies."

Maybe there will be some kind of limit to how unlimited it is, but if there's not, essentially with this item in tow, you'll have infinite resources in Dark Void. No limits on turbo, no limits on "barrel rolls, quick 180s and more." For a game where you're rocketeering around quite a bit, I imagine that unlimited turbo would make the experience a bit more of a breeze than it would normally be. Oh well. You can always just not use it.

For what sounds like such a game-changer of a pre-order item, Capcom and GameStop have put together a bit more promotion than publishers usually do for these kinds of things. There's a fairly ridiculous we call that gold [http://www.gold4jetpack.com/].

It'll be pretty dumb if it has the effect that they've made it seem it has. Though I tend to not count my chickens before they hatch, which is why I have such an accurate count of chickens.

I'm... not buying that game, it's not up my alley. But that is a REALLY great commercial.

Yes, but the real question is... what's Dark Void? I've never heard of it o_O
Probably the coolest game you've never heard of. Hopefully.

Well I'm definitely gonna try it out. I've been interested in this game for quite some time, so hopefully the finished product will be worth it. It does strike me as odd why they would put that as a pre-order bonus. Hopefully there will be a way to get this just by upgrading the jetpack in the game. (if you can)

He sounds like a used jetpack salesmen, once you preorder the pack'll just fall apart on you and you'll need to spend thousands of in game dollars to fix it. And we all know gold is heavier than most metals, so it'll probably accelerate slower or something to even it out.

Funny (and stupid) commercial...crappy incentive. Really, gold anything seems cheasy. Though I put it a bit higher than Gears for atleast having some use. Though Im no way gonna get it if I get the game.

I thought I might buy the game before, but now... I can't start pre-ordering games now, just because they give you an insanely cool advantage that sounds like it would make the game teh pwnage master of the skies.

This had better be available on a gold version or something after release or I'll be seriously cheesed off.

That ad is seriously annoying though.

A good commercial parody of Cash4Gold commercials... but I am extremely displeased at the WAVE of pre-order bonuses that developers are making. It seems that soon, the only way to buy the latest games is going to be pre-ordering it from a specific shop.

I get the need to guarantee advance sales, but pre-order bonuses that dramatically alter the gameplay like this are a slap in the face to people who buy the game later, because then they're not receiving the same experience. At the very least, devs should offer the bonuses as DLC a month or two after release, when all of your major sales are already accomplished.

that's an awesome commercial

at least they're having fun with the preorder stuff and frankly i don't mind all the preorder hype, it's an incentive to buy the game

Unlimited? That's completely pointless. I'm dying to grab this game, but this confirms I won't be pre-ordering it.
That completely screws up the original gameplay of the title.

Hmmmm... If I didn't hate GameStop so much, then I might actually preorder this. Oh well, I'm going to call and see when BattleToads for the Wii is coming out!

1) How have I never heard about this game until now?!

2) Some of the designers worked on Crimson Skies, one of my favorite Xbox games...hell, one of my favorite games ever. I loved the world it was set in and it made arcade dog-fights really fun and easy to get into. Dark Void looks to be an extension of this idea, pushed forward on the timeline quite a bit but the same concept seems there (you can see some futuristic-looking dirigibles in some of the screenshots.) This certainly looks and sounds like a game I'd be interested in.

3) Judging by this guy's "testimony" it would seem the infomercial speaks the truth: it's unlimited in use.

...Might make things a bit lopsided, but then controlling that much power is still the player who's reflexes are as good or not-so-good as they'd be with a regular jetpack.

Well...
Might make things a little unfair. But I don't intend to buy it so it won't matter.
Kudos for putting so much effort into the commercial though... at least they are trying.
