PS3 Sales Fall Sharply After Slim's Release Spike

The launch of the PS3 Slim may have sparked the console's biggest-selling week ever in Japan, but demand for the system appears to have fallen dramatically after the initial rush, with sales down two-thirds.

The launch of the smaller, cheaper PS3 led to massive increases in sales worldwide, with a particularly impressive spike in Sony's native turf of Japan - the PS3 Slim sold more than 150,000 units [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/94525-PS3-Sales-Soar-With-Release-of-the-Slim] in just three days. It was the PS3's single best-performing week in its lifetime to date.

Of course, what goes up must come down, and so must PS3 sales. The console has seen a sharp slump in sales if Famitsu publisher Enterbrain is to be believed, falling 90,000 units to a weekly toll of 57,056. It's not entirely unexpected - the price point was the major sticking point for many people (no matter the region) and with that barrier lowered, it may have been easy to justify picking one up. Now that a large portion of those who were "waiting for the price cut" have picked one up, it's likely that we'll still see sales fall over time.

Even though a reduction in sales of 90,000 units is no laughing matter, this isn't actually as bad for Sony as it sounds. For one thing, sales of 57,000 puts the PS3 squarely in second place behind only the mighty DSi (66,000), and well ahead of the competition (PSP - 19,000; Wii - 14,000). This puts the launch week's tremendous sales somewhat in perspective - if your sales can fall by almost two-thirds and you're still selling almost quadruple that of your nearest console rival? That's a job well done, mate.

Hardware sales for the week ended September 13 (for the two weeks ended September 13):

DSi - 66,416 (125,524)
PS3 - 57,056 (207,888)
PSP - 19,572 (42,117)
Wii - 14,556 (32,643)
DS Lite - 9,206 (14,765)
Xbox 360 - 4,927 (9,541)
PS2 - 3,100 (6,788)

Yeah, two of my friends each bought a ps3 slim over the weekend.
Is it true that the slim one runs faster than the fat?

Doesn't sound too bad. The only complaint I see about it is how ugly it is. And really, that's just being shallow.

Are those numbers in Japan only? I'm asking because it seems like the other console, Wii and 360 have very small sales.

Also, I wonder what the definate reason is for the sale drop? I guess the rest of the people who didn't have PS3's bought them would be a good reason, but shouldn't it still be selling really well?
I mean a 2/3 drop in sales is very steep. The PS3's a good system and it's now got a low price.

/does not compute.

Bah DSi, no game made for to utilize it's gimmicks will ever make me buy one.

but anyways on topic. I never really understood how consoles have large ongoing sales. most other things like games, movies, ect. will sell like 75% of there total sales in the first week or so and dribble down to nothing after that.

Well I said it wouldn't last, price drops only spike sales, then they start to decline. But those sales are still pretty strong. Also

That's a good point. Some believed that a lot of people who had PS3s traded in their phats for slims (no clue why, slim looks a tad fugly if you ask me).

If that were true, that could explain why the drop was so sharp. Besides that, it'll probably see some steady rise up to Christmas then maybe a drop, like all consoles. Gran Turismo usually sells really well, so when that comes out we'll probably see a rise again.

Um... Playstation 3 isn't really competing with Playstation Portable, so why do you state it as the "nearest console rival"?

It just seems a bit odd...

He's talking about the Wii, not the PSP.

that's actually a bit higher than normal sales for the 360 in Japan.

the PS3 sales dropped probly cause a lot of people got on last week or maybe they are running low in stores

Just wait for the release of Final Fantasy 13 in Japan on PS3. Then you will see sales that are going to go through the roof.

Those who were intending to get a PS3 waited because they knew the slim was coming. they bought it enmasse and now those intending to get it got it and aren't buying any more. Big spike now a drop back off, higher than normal sales are probably people who want the slim but last week wasn't a paycheck for them.

Well, truth be told, the Slim version is really damn ugly.
You get used to it after awhile, on the plus side it runs quieter and may or may not be slightly faster in terms of processing
