Capcom Responds to Resident Evil Religious Criticism

Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles [http://www.capcom.com] promotes the occult, calling it "scaremongering and typical religious hysteria."

Released in North America last week, Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles is a Wii title built around the events of Resident Evil Code: Veronica [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resident_Evil_2] along with additional, original content. While it's nothing particularly new for the most part, three U.K. religious leaders, Bishop Mark Bryant of Jarrow, Archdeacon Brian Smith and the Rt. Rev. John Goddard, nonetheless felt compelled to criticize the game for encouraging interest in the occult among children.

"If we dabble in this area we open ourselves to influences and put ourselves at risk," Goddard said. "I would regard any encouragement for children to be drawn into this behavior with extreme horror."

But in a rather strongly-worded response, Capcom dismissed the concerns outright. "This is scaremongering and typical religious hysteria. You cannot blame society's ills on video games. It's just absurd," said Capcom representative Leo Tan. "Most games (and movies) like Resident Evil show characters fighting evil, not supporting it. Unfortunately the clergy is showing a lack of understanding of the videogames industry and is too quick to splash the holy water and lump videogames players into stereotypical boxes.

"

"Videogames are entertainment and like horror movies or other scary films they are covered by a ratings system," he continued. "Resident Evil, for example, is a 15 and not suitable for anyone under that age. Parents have to be trusted to adhere to these age restrictions and use common sense."

Ach! So close yet so far. Sadly, parents can't seem to be trusted if my headset while playing Call of Duty 4 is any indication. It's a nice idea and it'd be wonderful if it were true, but reality has a tendency to bite such concepts in the ass.

Which area would that be? Creative use of flamethrowers to destroy giant mutant plant creatures? Shotguns to remove the heads of zombies in a colourful, brain splattering manner? Trying to get in good with that hot chick who you rescued from zombies? Terrible voice acting and dialogue scripting? Okay, admittedly that last one is kinda scary.

I'm almost tempted to dust off my Wii for this game; I was a huge fan of Resident Evil 2 when I was a wee lad and I wouldn't mind picking it up again to get Leon and Claire through the ruins of Raccoon City, but it probably won't be worth my money. Might pick it up when it gets bargain bin'd though.

Good for them, about time somebody told scaremongers that they've got no clue what they're talking about.

If only someone could tell the the media and politicians off instead of just religous officials.

I APPROVE THIS RESPONSE!

Seriously, when the fanatic twats start ranting, the best thing to do is just smack them across the chops and shout "STFU!" in their face. Metaphorically speaking of course, this is what happened here. I like it.

Holy shit, an executive with balls. If this guy's statement isn't retracted for a more toned-down and neutered version within the week then Capcom just got some respect from me.......respect that replaces what they lost with the whole RE5 DLC fiasco.
