Cameron: Smoking Cigarettes in Avatar Comments on Obsessive Gamers

James Cameron responded to anti-smoking groups by claiming that the smoking in Avatar [http://www.amazon.com/Avatar-Two-Disc-Blu-ray-DVD-Combo/dp/B002VPE1B6/ref=sr_1_1?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1282154703&sr=1-1] was meant to critique obsessive gamers.

The character played by Sigourney Weaver, Grace Augustine, is a scientist who demands a cigarette as soon as she is awoken from cryogenic sleep. Anti-smoking website, Scenesmoking.org [http://scenesmoking.org/frame.htm], slammed Avatar for the scenes depicting Grace smoking as they believe such depictions encourage kids to start smoking. Cameron responded in the NY Times by stating that Grace was never meant to be a teen role model and that her character was an attempt to critique individuals who spend too much time in their avatar - online or in games - and don't care for their real human body the same way.

The reviewer at scenesmoking.org had this to say about the film, "In the world of Avatar, everything is modern and technologically forward, but obviously the creators were not thinking forward when they included smoking in several scenes of the movie." The reviewer is only identified as MP, and rates the film [http://scenesmoking.org/reviewdetails2.cfm?id=1169] a "black lung" for its portrayal of smoking.

Director James Cameron said that Grace was not "an aspirational role model" for teenagers. "She's rude, she swears, she drinks, she smokes," said Cameron. "Also, from a character perspective, we were showing that Grace doesn't care about her human body, only her avatar body, which again is a negative comment about people in our real world living too much in their avatars, meaning online and in video games."

He continued to rail against any possible censorship of smoking in movies by saying, "I don't believe in the dogmatic idea that no one in a movie should smoke. Movies should reflect reality. If it's O.K. for people to lie, cheat, steal and kill in PG-13 movies, why impose an inconsistent morality when it comes to smoking? I do agree that young role-model characters should not smoke in movies, especially in a way which suggests that it makes them cooler or more accepted by their peers."

Cameron's final statement says it all. Smoking "is a filthy habit which I don't support, and neither, I believe, does Avatar."

I have to say, the point is awarded to James Cameron. Well done, sir.

Those anti-smoking folks seem almost as intelligent as P.E.T.A...

Yup, I fail to see there logic...

I think Cameron is throwing us under the bus so he doesn't have to argue...

Though I disagree with smoking in general, those people need to chill the fuck out.

i would go that far, myself...
it seems these day that almost all smoking onscreen is done by 'bad guys'
i for one don't mind it, so long as one is polite about not doing it in front of those whom get offended by it, but these days it seems like that's most people..

OH MY GOD, SOMEONE HAS A CIGARETTE!!! Call the fire department! Call the Justice League! Call the Ghostbuster!

C'mon! People are murdered and raped in teen movies, and most of the time it's made to look cool. It's not like if someone who has never smoked sees a person smoking they're going to buy a carton that instant.

I think the anti-smoking groups just commented on Avatar because of its huge success and they want to try and steal some of the limelight and money.

Anti-smoking people are just folks who enjoy telling other people how to live their lives and have found a socially acceptable way to do it.

So... instead of complaining about issues like, say, the use of guns in film, these sunday school moms take great offense to someone smoking... Oh noes... Sounds like an official Board Of Trolls with no lives.

Anti-anything groups will look at anything they can see that goes against their beliefs, and turn it into something terrible. This is nothing new, and something that'll never change.

Cameron's a dick.
Don't blame us because you don't have the balls to tell the anti-smoking groups that teens should be smart enough to make their own judgements and not copy a cfictional character.

I dont care if they were potraying us badly. Was Han Solo a role model? no. Do people still adore him? i think that question answers itself.

Scenesmoking-dot-oh-are-gee is probably protesting because most of them quit the habit, and watching a beautiful woman like Sigourney smoke is like watching porn with all the best bits cut out. Frustrating!
And what about all the other age groups as well? Groups like this make me sick when they single out one demographic to attempt to make a point, when all it turns into is the sounds of someone trying to talk around their foot.
This would be why I enjoy people like James Cameron. They won't be petty in leaving out details in a movie which they might be against, but know omitting it is hypocritical and debilitating to the story in some way. Richard Donner of Lethal Weapon fame is strongly against the NRA and is for strong gun control, but he didn't let that stop him from making 4 great movies(ok no.4 was just ok, but the series altogether is great). He was even able to sneak a message into LW3 with great taste.
My hat is off to Mr. Cameron, for making an awersome movie, and being sneaky as well. :D

If anyone goes out and starts smoking purely because of that film, I will;

Firstly, eat my own face.
and secondly, thrash them to within an inch of their lives.
