I called it! I so called this as soon as she popped up on screen and lit that cigarette, I knew some group would be idiotic enough to complain about something that insignificant. People are stupid, I stopped being surprised long ago.

Cameron, you earned a cookie.

What's that? You can buy about 15 trillion cookies and still have enough money left over to pay some men to build a mansion out of them?

Well, have a cookie anyway.

OT: Smoking is a filthy habit but it also makes you look cool. Remember that kids.

So what else can we ban from movies? Nose picking, gas, burps, blinking. You must computer generate all blinking out of films! For THE CHILDREN!

Wow, I have never seen such idioticness on both sides of the argument. Cameron, your rebuttal is astounding in that it is almost twice as stupid as the argument you were countering!

Those anti-smoking folks seem almost as intelligent as P.E.T.A...
No kidding. While I didn't catch the reference to gaming, I certainly didn't see her character's introduction and think to myself "That's the person I wanna be". If anything, you're supposed to start-out the movie kinda hating her. She pops out of the little pod, demands a smoke, insults the only character we really know so far, then runs off to go ***** at someone else. You warm-up to her character later on in the movie, but only in the "I could see getting along with her now that she isn't such a *****" way, certainly not in the "I wanna be like her" way.

I'd also like to point out this is the same group that had several Tom & Jerry cartoons removed from TV because they contained smoking. The fact that these guys are fucking idiots is nothing new.

Cameron's a dick.
Don't blame us because you don't have the balls to tell the anti-smoking groups that teens should be smart enough to make their own judgements and not copy a cfictional character.
^This

Take your crazed anti-smoking groups someplace else soccermoms

And Cameron, take your shitty sub-par Dances with Wolves - Ferngully - Pocahonthas - Smurfs rip-off of a storyline and cram it back into the throat of the ignorant mainstream audience before you decide to blame gamers for their "nasty habits"

I find this to be pretty funny, and I never knew that some people could be so anti-smoking, there are far worse things in this world than smoking.

Cameron's final statement says it all. Smoking "is a filthy habit which I don't support, and neither, I believe, does Avatar."
I bet the temptation was high for him to add "They can put that in their pipe and smoke it!"
I totally would have :p

If anyone goes out and starts smoking purely because of that film, I will;

Firstly, eat my own face.
and secondly, thrash them to within an inch of their lives.
Thirdly, film it. Put it on Youtube. That will be quite the spectacle.

Also, these anti-smoking dudes are now officially another group that makes me lose my faith in humanity.

I can't stand these extremist anti-smoking groups. The kind of people who want to give every movie that depicts smoking an "R" rating (bye bye Alice in Wonderland).

Whether or not people smoke is not dependent on the media. If someone wants to start smoking, they'll do it regardless of what they see on TV. And I can guarantee that no one is going to start smoking because they saw Sigourney Weaver do it once in a movie.

Honestly, what's worse? Demonizing, condemning, and telling vicious lies about movies with cigarettes and companies that sell them, or a company that provides a product for anyone who might want it regardless of the potential long-term damage to their bodies?

I think the anti-smoking groups just commented on Avatar because of its huge success and they want to try and steal some of the limelight and money.
Yup, this.

I really have major problems with any organisation that bases it's entire argument on us as a race being so damn weak willed that we'll copy every last little thing we see. Most kids are sensible enough to take on board the health risks involved with smoking - hell i even know plenty of medical students and doctors who smoke because people do it for many reasons. Somewhere near the bottom of that list is 'because i saw it in a movie'

And for the record, what business do these guys have anyway telling people not to smaoke? The only people who have license to do that are medical professionals, otherwise it is purely a personal choice.

I hate these guys for the same reason I hate PETA:

I am a vegetarian, and PETA makes me look like an asshat for being so.

I do not smoke, and scenesmoking.org makes me look like an asshat for being a nonsmoker.

What gets me is the fact that they are trying to outlaw smoking in movies. There are enough anti smoking adds to tell children that cigarettes are bad for you. They don't need to start neutering the movie industry.
