Meridian 59 Publisher Closing Down

Meridian 59 [http://meridian59.neardeathstudios.com/] publisher Near Death Studios announced today that it is shutting down, surprising industry observers around the world who had assumed that Meridian 59 crapped out years ago.

Near Death Studios [http://www.neardeathstudios.com/] was founded in 2001 by former Meridian 59 developers Rob Ellis and Brian Green, who bought the rights to the game from original publisher 3DO. Meridian 59 had actually been launched all the way back in 1996, one of the earliest MMOGs to hit the market, but was shut down by 3DO in 2000; Near Death relaunched in the game in 2002.

On his personal blog [http://www.psychochild.org/?p=884], however, Green wrote that the company has been on "life support" for the past five years and while they were able to keep the game running, there was never enough money to do much else with it. "I haven't taken a regular salary from the company in many years now," he said. "There's enough money to keep the server running and someone to do the minimum maintenance required. But, little work has been done on the game, and believe me the fans have noticed. :)"

The company has faced numerous obstacles over the years but the "killing blow" has a vaguely Al Capone-ish [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al_Capone#Conviction_and_prison] ring to it: The loss of its billing provider. "We no longer had a credit card processor for subscriptions. We talked to another company, but after several months of false starts they told me they were dropping the project since they had sunk so much money into it without result," Green explained. "While deciding how to handle the situation, it was decided that closing down the company was the best option."

It's always sad to see a game developer go under, particularly a small one that's struggled for so many years, but I'm not going to pretend that this doesn't have some real comedy potential. A mid-90s MMOG in 2010? "Near Death" Studios? It'd be a shame not to riff on that somehow, but I want to change things up a bit and get some audience participation on this one. Hit me with your best "ba-dum tish!" zinger for this story and don't hold back!

Oh, and for anyone who might actually care, Meridian 59 itself isn't going anywhere. "The game will continue running," Green said. "It just won't be running as a commercial concern with Near Death Studios owning it."

OP: That's sad, I remember my dad showing me that game when I was 5 to show what the internet could do.
Hurray for inside jokes.

I laughed don't worry.

ot:I've heard of many games, but I don't think I've heard of this game or these companies. But from what I saw above they must have been well known.

I actually played Meridian 59 when it was in beta, but there was no way I was going to pay for it. Yup, I've hated MMOGs that long.

Also, re: zingers: You guys suck.

Ouch! Andy, you know how to cut to the core of me.

On topic: It's too bad they weren't called 'Coma Studios', because this would be like pulling the plug after years of tube feeding and limp, awkward sponge baths from the intern. With 'Near Death', it makes it sound more like a rest home where the orderly would forget about you on the toilet and steal the cookies your family brought you before you finally decided to wheel yourself into the duck pond to end it all.

I am amazed its been able to carry on for this long, more than a decade? It has outlasted Tabula Rasa and Hellgate, no small feat considering considering how obsurce it seems.

They should just re-market the game as "Meridian 69", and make it like some online ERP love fest.

The amount of sex offenders that would bring in alone would keep the servers running, and maybe that guy could get payed for once.

Payed with dirty ERP monies.

Actually people have tried making Porn MMOGs. I haven't been interested enough to find out how "Red Light District" and "Naughty America Online" actually turned out. It would be interesting though if someone DID make an Adults MMORPG that wasn't a total sex comedy that featured material/animations/etc... from the adult games, while still being a totally playable and serious fantasy RPG like WoW or whatever. Not only would it keep kids off, I could see how somethinglike "Gor Online" could be seriously entertaining.

As far as Meridian 59 itself, at the time that was new I was playing Dark Sun Online: CRimson Sands (which was awful) since I was a fan of the single player Dark Sun games. I then moved on to Ultima Online when it first came out. Never really tried it.

I'm truely surprised it still exists because I remember it being advertised in the menu of one of my old "Might And MAgic" games (where you would click on a door to play that ad). I thought it went belly up pretty quick. I'm pretty surprised there was the dedication to keep it going this long.

In some ways it makes me sad because I was a fan of an old game called "Earth and Beyond". I had to stop playing for a while (I was working at the time and very busy) and when I tried to come back it was dead. If there had been similarly dedicated employees and creators it might have lasted longer (sighs). As much as I hated the warping, I thought it had some need stuff. I still remember the whole "Tada-O" schtick and their mascot "Meagan". :)

As a current player, I wish these articles would emphasize the fact that the game is still around and will in fact be operated by some pretty high profile names. The original creators bought the game. We don't know their plans yet.

But I will say, Meridian 59 is still around because it literally has the best MMO PvP ever designed. That's what happens when your game lasts 15 years. You get 15 years of balancing until it's exceedingly perfect. The major problem in this incarnation was that Near Death Studios was undercapitalized from the very start. They never had a chance to advertise, and the owners had to get jobs instead of work on the game. This change of ownership could be a huge revitalization.

At the very least, I'm happy the game will still be around. It's like a badge of honor walking around the nerd world as a Meridian 59 player, being completely justified in laughing out loud when people talk about 'how great they are at WoW PvP'. It's like a Vietnam vet overhearing a security guard talk about 'how much action he's seen'.

He was truly a psycho child to run the game that long!

Geddit? "Psycho" because he'd be craaaazy to keep the game running for little to no pay? And his nickname is Psychochild!

I slay me!

Pseudo Edit: I briefly met Mr. Green once back at our Escapist E3 party years ago, very nice guy. While it's sad to see the game finally fizzle out, it's amazing how long they've held on.
