Has God of War Creator Given up on Reviews?

Has David Jaffe, father of the mighty Kratos, stopped caring about what reviewers say about his games? Well that depends on who you ask.

God of War creator David Jaffe apparently no longer cares what reviewers say about his games. Speaking in an interview with Official PlayStation Magazine he said: "Don't get me wrong - a good review makes my night, but I no longer find myself connecting with what a lot of reviewers go for and so it doesn't matter as much to me anymore."

However, on his blog [http://www.davidjaffe.biz/] Jaffe refutes the idea that he's given up on reviews, although bizarrely he does it by interpreting his own quote: "To me, this sounds like I DO care about getting good reviews BUT I'm not as vested in proper media reviews as I used to be because I don't feel I connect as much as I used to to what mainstream game critics like/want/desire. That was all I was saying and I THINK I got that idea across. "

Jaffe, who is known for having a tumultuous relationship with gaming journalists, seems to imply that the idea that he has given up on reviews is something that was invented the writer of the OPM piece: " I can't imagine someone would just make something up and attribute it to me...people don't do that sort of thing, do they?" The whole situation seems a little weird to me, but I suppose we'll see which one was right when Jaffe's new game, rumored to be a new Twisted Metal game, is released.

Well actually, it seems like he's both gotten some fairly decent reviews overall as both "God Of War" and "Twisted Metal" are pretty big successes. GoW for example set the standard for brawlers, and all of the current crop are more or less compared to it.

That said, I do tend to agree with him. It seems to me that most current reviewers have an agenda, and going back to the whole "Kane and Lynch" fiasco of a few years back it's become increasingly obvious that the amount of money spent advertising in a given source seems to have an affect on the reviews you wind up receiving.

Overall as someone who enjoys a lot of success and fandom, he's in a position that he can afford to be rather dismissive of reviewers. To be honest we already know God Of War 3 is going to be a big success, and even if it blows chips compared to the other next gen brawlers legions of fanboys will defend the brand name irregardless. Twisted Metal has been missing from the landscape for a while, but at the same token it still has a strong fanbase and will doubtlessly meet with a similar response should he release it.

Only if both of those games fail epically will he be in a position where he would have to start sucking up to reviewers to try and get their influance to win back his fan base, however I don't see it happening as he has a fairly secure position, even if I'm not a huge fan of either of those franchises.

I am actually a little surprised he backpedaled.

Fair enough, game reviews are just opinions anyway
Exactly. They are what that inidivudal thinks. I think they are important, but, you should only ever use them as guidelines

I feel the same way. Reading what most reviewers put I often feel they are missing half the points of games or are simply re-iterating what half a dozen other reviewers have already said (and usually said better).

The man is obviously an idiot anyway. You can't disdain something and then refute your disdain by interpreting your OWN disdain.
Except he never said he didn't care about reviews. The very first part of the quote is "Don't get me wrong, a good review makes my night"

How is that not caring about reviews?

When I first read the quote I was like, ok so he's saying he still likes to get good reviews, but he finds the reviewers are looking for different things in a game than he's looking for. (Like when they complain about the linearity in FF and the FF creater was like WTF? This wasn't meant to be an open world game)

And I looked at the interpretation and though "okay that's just understandable exaggeration to make a headline"

And ironically I'm viewing THIS article and THIS headline in the same way.

WELL, he OBVIOUSLY that is BECAUSE he does not look very HAPPY in his PICTURE.

Does the guy have a definition problem or something? Can't he just use italics like the rest of us?

To me it's very clear what he means: "I still like it when I'm given a good review, but if I'm given a bad one I just don't give a shit."

Oh so you've played it then? lol. As stated already Jaffe's not involved in GoW 3, his next project appears to be a new Twisted Metal game. And yes, Twisted Metal's effin awesome.

Sorry guys I missed that part. I wasn't trying to troll. It would have been an appropriate response if he was involved like I thought he was. Sorry that the title threw me off.

Well to be fair most of the time when I read a game review I'm thinking "Did this person really play the game? It reads like they (choose your adventure time) A) didn't get paid enough to like it B) got a fat paycheck and think it is gold."

When I was younger reviews seemed a little more opinion based. Now if people aren't getting something for free, or a check from the game company itself, they don't like it.
