Soooooo basically he's saying that the game reviewers suck, instead his games sucking.
Well to be fair most of the time when I read a game review I'm thinking "Did this person really play the game? It reads like they (choose your adventure time) A) didn't get paid enough to like it B) got a fat paycheck and think it is gold."

When I was younger reviews seemed a little more opinion based. Now if people aren't getting something for free, or a check from the game company itself, they don't like it.
I have to agree have you ever sat down and watched a review after already playing the game most the time you are just sitting there trying to figure out what in the heck game the guy was actually playing.

Reviews are opinion based which is why I do not use them as a buy or not buy decision maker. Although I have always had an idea for what I would consider a great review system.
1) 2 people review every game for the published review one person who is a big fan of the genre and another who does is not really that interested in that genre of game. The 2 review scores are averaged for the final review. with comments from both reviewers in the text/video review.

2) total of 5 points are available for the final score although the (need to work on figuring out a unified review score card for the reviewers though) When displayed on the webpage it is ranked as a (game should be buried),(game is bad and has game breaking glitches), (only the most die hard fans should rent/buy), (fans of the series should buy), (Rent it unless fan of the genre then must buy), and (Everyone should buy or rent this game). The actual score number would be displayed after the recommendation text so that it can be tallied for metacritic.

Something like that but alas I do not have the money to put into developing this idea into a actual system. But I think it would be nice to see it reviewed by two people especially polar opposite people because then you would know which one you are siding with and if they both like or hate the game then you know it is probably pretty good or pretty bad.

I agree with the man. I haven't trusted main stream game reviewers for awhile.

The main reason most game reviewers are shit is being the majority of reviews come from gaming websites, which rely exclusive interviews, information and clips from new games. Where as people in the movie biz rely on movie reviewers the game industry works quite the other way around. If a game from a big name company get's a bad score that company can simply choose not to allow that website exclusives. Website looses exclusives, looses viewers, looses money, goes offline.

It's why most game reviews just seem to be advertisements with a list of features rather than someone saying "This is brilliant, this is ok, this is shit". At least that's my reasoning.

Do reviews even matter for GOW3? It's a hyped up sequel to a major series, which always get high scores even when they shouldn't.

It's going to be Goty with a ton of 95% scores even when it turns out to be utter crap like MW2.

This man gave the gaming world Twisted Metal and God of War. He is a genius and is entitled to not give a rat's smelly ass about what game reviewers think. Even though he was not involved with God of War II and III, he started the series and left it in very capable hands. He deserves points for that. Also, I too want a new Twisted Metal game.

"Don't get me wrong - a good review makes my night, but I no longer find myself connecting with what a lot of reviewers go for and so it doesn't matter as much to me anymore."

This guy is utter BS. He is fine with good reviews and he still cares somewhat about them cause they "Makes my night" but bad ones he can't connect with?

I wouldn't care about reviews if I made games that were incredibly popular both critically and with the general public either.

Sheessh. A lot of people think the dude is a douche for basically stating that he doesn't care what people think of his work.

I don't know if it is because I am much the same but I don't give a rat's ass what people think of me or what I do. Now it always feels nice to hear good things about your work, but that doesn't mean I would be bothered if someone thought what I did was shit.

Hmm.... I dunno. I can't think that they could fuck up God of war too badly. Give solid platforming, very spectacular set pieces and death sequences, make the story sum up in an acceptable way, and give us the last bits of mythology they haven't already torn apart in gruesome ways to do so to.

I think that's all gamers are asking for.

if you're asking for more, you aren't their ideal customer.

I hope that he uses reviews to not rate himself on a "did I do good?" basis, but instead as a "what can I do next time to make it better" basis, a critique of himself and learning to change things that don't work into something that does

Like how AS2 seemed to listen and remove or edit gameplay mechanics that were crappy in the first game...gaming is a learning experience that requires input to get better and evolve into hopefully the greatest games ever...

I like David Jaffe. Not sure why, he seems to be a cock at times, but atleast he's honest and outspoken about it.

Game reviews are basically worth less than dirt anyway. The commercial nature of the industry almost demands reviews to be biased at best and laughable at worst, if I was a developer I'd give the major sites some cash and wouldn't care about the rest. It's been a long time since I've read an honest review, the whole idea of objectifying reviews is pointless anyways. I want them to be subjective, aggressive and blunt. Yathzee comes close, he admits his biases but doesn't seem to have an agenda which makes his argument seem much more honest.

The whole idea of judging games based on a Metacritic average is sad to say the least, rent the game and see what you think. Hope Jaffe delivers an awesome game.

Having watched the DVD that came with the God Of War strategy guide, which featured Jaffe doing commentary through an entire playthrough of the game, this does not surprise me...he does tend to come across as a jackass. An honest jackass, though, and one who does make some pretty damn good games...
