Hot Coffee Lawsuit Checks Are In The Mail

Good news for all you people who were psychologically traumatized by the infamous Grand Theft Auto [http://www.amazon.com/Grand-Theft-Auto-Andreas-Playstation-2/dp/B0001VGFK2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1278952683&sr=1-1] Hot Coffee mod: Your check is in the mail!

You might remember the Take-Two [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hot_Coffee_minigame_controversy] recalled the game and eventually re-released it with the code removed and, inevitably, the lawsuits flew fast and furious.

After years of legal wrangling, Take-Two finally May 16, 2008 [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/94376-Take-Two-Settles-Hot-Coffee-Lawsuit-for-20-Million]. And now, after a half-decade that has seen the release of Liberty City Stories, Vice City Stories, Grand Theft Auto 4, The Lost and Damned, Chinatown Wars, The Ballad of Gay Tony and Episodes from Liberty City, those San Andreas checks are finally in the mail.

According to the GTA Class Action Settlement website [http://www.gtasettlement.com/Default.htm], everyone who filed claims prior to the deadline will receive their payouts by April 15, 2010. The checks are accompanied by a letter releasing the claimant of "any and all claims... arising out of your purchase or use off the Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas videogame."

Have any of you received a Hot Coffee payment? If so, consider this while you're cashing your windfall: Less than three thousand people from across the U.S. filed claims in the class action lawsuit, adding up to an actual payout of well under $30,000, yet the lawyers who filed the case claimed legal fees in excess of $1 million [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/84673-NY-Times-Probes-Hot-Coffee-Legal-Fees]. Ain't the legal system great?

I can't believe they agreed to pay out in the end. I think Take 2 should've stuck it out till the end and watched the lawyer firm go bust.

Why are these lawsuits taking so long to get done?
Why did they exist in the first place?

To my knowledge the game was an 18, and you had to intentionally do certain things in order to unlock it. Nobody who accessed the mini-game would have done so without knowing exactly what it was.

Huh, hope that 35$ heals that big hole in your chest that unfinished code created every one who filled a law suit.

Yeah, I could not believe what had happened due to this... This is further proof that our governments do not understand how video games work. Hopefully as these politicians die off they will be replaced by people who are gaming-literate.

Same here actually...

OT: Wow, really?

Well I hope that the $35 helps the children that had to download the mod on their own free will and follow instructions on how to get it working.

I'm so glad that these checks are in the mail. I know that the 35$ I will receive will assist in alleviating the suffering, emotional trauma, and debilitating shock from seeing sex in a video game. This highly traumatic experience has forever changed my view of the world, as I know understand that people enjoy sticking parts of their body into parts of someone else's body for pleasure, and procreation. I had always assumed that pro-creation took place by osmosis. However, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, with its hideously detailed sexual mini-game, has permanently changed my life, for the worse. Some people have pointed out that I would see far more sexualized images on TV and in Magazines, but I refuse to believe them! The TV networks are run by wholesome, upstanding people who care about my well-being! The callousness shown by Rockstar Games is nothing short of appalling. I am most thankful for the 35$, which will finally give me closure on this.

/sarcasm (I never took part in that ridiculous lawsuit)

Why do you think there are always those commercials of "want to sue 'such and such' for product 'this and that', call 'whoever-lawyer"? It's because eventually the payout will be crap for the person filing the claim, but the lawyers will get a huge ton of money.

That's the problem with our legal system, and that's also why people say that lawyers are "soulless spawns of hell". Sure, legal defenders, those that work for the people are good sometimes, but that's a low percentage as even many legal defenders that I've met and come across are shady crooks that are out for the quickest buck.

At least the money they're getting wont cover the price of the game or the GameShark they would've needed to unlock the code for Hot Coffee.

I hope that the fragile little minds destroyed by hot coffee never recover from the trauma.
One of the best games of all time and they sue for something that was taken out.

Eugh. I'd like to know the figures of people who complained and how much is getting paid out. I don't think I watched Hot Coffee. I may have done and it didn't stick in my mind.

Whoever did purposely went looking for it and I don't think people will be winning a 2 girls 1 cup lawsuit any time soon. Take 2 should have given them a code which unlocked a big 'Whatever' sign.

I'll never quite understand the seething hatred lawyers get.

Anyways, I'm glad that all they get is five to thirty-five dollars when they are being billed at least a million dollars. That should teach them a lesson next time and maybe, just maybe... they'll all learn the true meaning of Christmas.

Or maybe they need an angel to push them off a bridge...
