Super Mario Galaxy 2 Started As Galaxy 1.5

If Nintendo had stuck to its original plan, Super Mario Galaxy 2 [http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=75083] would have been Super Mario Galaxy 1.5 - and would have come out a year and a half ago.

You've heard it all before: Galaxy was awesome, Galaxy 2 looks great, do very, VERY want [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/100490-Glimpse-Gobs-of-New-Mario-Galaxy-2-Gameplay-Goodies], etc - my excitement for Super Mario Galaxy 2 is no secret.

What was secret, though - at least, until now - is that we could have gotten Galaxy 2 much earlier ... but it would have also been a much smaller game. Speaking with Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata, Mario's creator Shigeru Miyamoto said that he originally told his staff to think of the game as Super Mario Galaxy 1.5 so they wouldn't work themselves too hard, according to Andriasang [http://www.andriasang.com/e/blog/2010/05/11/iwata_asks_miyamoto_about_mario/].

The original plan had been to deliver something like Zelda: Majora's Mask: A smaller sequel, with a development time of approximately a year - Galaxy 1.5 was intended to be in stores at the end of 2008. Of course, once the team buckled down and got to work, they looked back at the original game and noticed "areas where they felt they hadn't fully utilized the qualities of the sphere-based design."

Before long, "over 90 percent of the courses were new, and it was difficult to see where the old stage layouts were" - what started as "1.5" had officially become "2." Since they had already nailed down the problems relating to cameras and Mario's movement with the first game, all of the development time was laser-focused on new stages, items, and the tuning thereof.

Unfortunately, it also meant that the game took an extra year-and-a-half to develop than had been originally planned, with the game now scheduled to come out on May 23rd. On the other hand, it may well have been worth it - Galaxy 2 garnered a 10 from the notoriously harsh Edge [http://www.edge-online.com/magazine/review-super-mario-galaxy-2].

Personally, I'm satisfied with waiting an extra year and a half for a great game. I mean, I'm a fan of both Blizzard and Valve - it's not like I'm not used to it.

Wow, SMG2 is shaping up to be really quite good. Oh, and I larfed at the little crack at Blizzard and Valve at the end.

Admittedly, I'd take Episode 3 over SMG2 any day but don't tell Nintendo.

I'm all for developers delaying their games, it just means they're making sure it's as good as possible. Unless we're talking about Duke Nukem Forever, anyways.

They should have done what most devs do, Release a game, then release the REST of the game on DLC.

I mean, most games now seem like a "1.5"

I still can't get over how disturbingly Rule 34-ish Mario & Yoshi look.

A bad game is always bad. A late game can be good. Nintendo knows this; they delayed OoT.

I'll second that. Waiting some extra time for a good game is fine, but then again, waiting 10 years for Too Human or 5 years for Alan Wake - not so fine.

Quoted for truth.

This always seems to be the case now. Release a half finished game and the rest come on DLC. I hate that system, i'd much rather wait for polished, if delayed releases that have been given the full works.

As a side note, i hate episodic content. It's like DLC, but in meatier chunks, and it almost *never* works out. Anyone remember SIN Episode 1? I really enjoyed that game, but guess what? It bombed. No SIN episodes to come after the first. Half Life 2: Episode 3 also seems to have gone to the dogs. No idea what's happened to that, another thing i'm pissed about. I'm sure there's other examples out there, but you get the idea.

Say no to DLC and Episodic Content and yes to polished products.

Looking forward to this more and more as the days go by. I thought galaxy was a fantastic game, and the Edge review was pretty damn positive...

I'm going to get flamed for this I just know it, but I'm always up for a challenge.

It still is Super Mario Galaxy 1.5. It really needs an actual story to be considered a true sequel. Look at Majora's Mask, it reused a lot of material already found in Ocarina of Time but with its gameplay enhancements and story it became a whole new experience. In today's age of gaming story plays a massive role, and leaving it out feels somewhat lacking I suppose. From what I've seen of SMG2, it just looks like the first one with a few new powerups and Yoshi thrown at it. Doesn't mean I won't get, I loved SMG, but I wouldn't call it a true sequel.

So... SMB3 and SMW aren't sequels?

Good point you have there. I suppose most people don't play Mario games for story, but that doesn't mean it should be completely discounted altogether.

I would argue that SMB3 was so different from SMB that it is a true sequel. Plus back in the 8bit era stories weren't anywhere near as important and big as they are now, so I probably should've mentioned in my original post I'm talking about today's era of games.

And I would argue that SMW is another game in the series but not a direct sequel, in the same way most of the Zelda games are set in the same universe but not directly related to one another.

What I mean is I don't think it should be discarded either but most people probably would care even if it existed. I happen to agree with you, I enjoyed that little side story the first game offered. A little backstory is nice.

Well, I know for a fact that this one won't replace SMG1 in my heart without Rosalina...

Isn't she supposed to be in SMG2?

Sorry if I spoiled that for anyone.
I haven't seen her in any of the trailers or promo materials... have you?

I thought I did somewhere. You'll have to forgive me if it's not true. I've been boycotting all media of this ever since Nintendo's Media Summit. I want to know as little as I can before I get to play it.
