Sony Announces Star Wars: Clones Wars Adventures

LucasArts [http://www.station.sony.com/] have teamed up to unveil Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures, a new kid-friendly, free-to-play virtual world coming later this year.

The new virtual world will be a "fun and safe online environment" featuring mini-games and activities, "social gatherings," numerous customization options and more. Kids can join with their friends to battle the forces of evil alongside "iconic" Star Wars [http://www.starwars.com] characters like Anakin Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi and Ahsoka Tano, while parents will be able to put limits on the action with built-in parental controls. Clone Wars Adventures will be free-to-play but monthly memberships and microtransaction options will also be available to gamers who want to "take the galactic action to the next level."

"Working hand in hand with Lucasfilm, LucasArts and Sony Online Entertainment ensures that Clone Wars Adventures will be the most authentic and accessible Clone Wars experience for kids and families to play in their very own living room," said LucasArts Vice President Mary Bihr.

Calling it "the ultimate destination for fans of The Clone Wars [http://www.starwars.com/theclonewars/]," SOE President John Smedley added, "We've worked with LucasArts and Lucasfilm to create a virtual world that is seamlessly integrated with the TV series and a true extension of the show. It's also just flat-out fun to play."

All of which may be true, but I'm having trouble wrapping my head around the idea of Ahsoka Tano as an "iconic" Star Wars figure. Really, Sony? Is it fair to call a character iconic if I have to hit Google to find out who she is? Ah, but maybe I'm just old and out of touch. I'll have to ask my sister's kid if he remembers the time little Anakin crushed a dude's throat [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vTnj-pkWN18] with one hand just because he was in a bad mood.

Star Wars: Clone Wars Adventures launches this fall, exclusively for the PC.

The only thing they say she's 'iconic' is because of a marvelous technique called Shilling the Wesley. [http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ShillingTheWesley] They want us to think Ahsoka is someone to idolize rather than denounce as an annoying brat.

As for the game, I highly doubt it will do well if it releases and then has to compete with SW: TOR. More people are going to want to do the latter because of the promise of better gameplay that doesn't cater to the demographic the original Star Wars wasn't really aimed towards.

I'm one of those losers who actually LIKES The Clone Wars and I've always said there's some good video game potential in there.

It's sad all of it is wasted on shovelware. This seems to be no exception, now we're not just ripping off kids by selling them crappy video games, now we have to go the extra mile by having them waste money via micro transactions -.-

Seriously Sony, not cool. Micro transactions as a concept really pisses me off but if that's the way you wanna go, fine. Just keep it the hell off games aimed at kids!

Whu...?

I am totally confused by this. The Original Star Wars demographic was kids, but the movie transcended that demographic. SW:TOR is (best I can tell) aimed at the current MMO generation (a lot of youngsters in that crowd) and older grown-up fans of SW (who, unless they have kids of their own, may have missed the part about SW ultimately being for kids).

SW:CWA sounds like a great fit for older SW fans who want to get their kids playing in a kid-safe MMO environment. I don't think it's aimed at (or even going to compete with) the more adult/teen oriented SW:TOR.

Its surprisingly gained the status of "cult hit".

I was surprised as well, but there are a decent amount of people who like the TV show. Of all ages.

Well... I don't know. I mean... I want to cry out against it, but I see nothing morally wrong with it. Aside from the micro-transactions... that and children should not be in the same sentence let alone the same room. Other than that, I have no qualms with this.

I like that people die in it; it teaches kids that there are consequences when wielding a blaster and I can appreciate that.

Actually, if you have any sense of taste, it goes something like this:

Original Trilogy > Clone Wars >>>> Prequel Trilogy.

Clone was isn't half bad, really. It captures the Star Wars mystique a whole lot better than the prequel trilogy. Of course, the original trilogy is the best, simply because it was quite cutting edge for its time.

(Personally, I think the most brand damage to the Star Wars license probably comes from Star Wars Galaxies. Here's hoping Old Republic can counteract some of that. I doubt Sony will repeat the same mistake with Clone Wars Adventures -- for one thing, the war-like setting is considerably less prone to the virtual worldly focus that proved so very incompatible with the license.)

O.O

My eyes are burning. I must Cleanse them with LittleBIGPlanet.

Sorry, but Clone Wars? Is that even any good, the show? I watched that one that was in Cinema and it was so boring. It's like every 20 minutes it reset itself and changed writers.

The Dark Side did feel more Bad-Ass though, much more than they did in Episode 2.

Calumon: Especially more than that clicking lizard, tentacle thing.

I never saw the Clone Wars Show, But I've seen the movies so I guess I can't be too out of touch to play it. A free Star Wars MMO is still a free Star Wars MMO. So perhaps I'll give it a go if the base pack isn't too expensive. Although the young kids who like The Clone Wars may not be the same people that I'd wanna play an MMO with.

Sony, I normally don't say this, but today you have disappointed me.

I'm going back into my corner until this crappy game blows over. ;_;
