It was a good year, and the book was good as well. I suppose it would have to a good book considering how many times people have made that same "big brother is watching" motif for a movie/game/painting/book/...archie comic.
I wish I went to your school.PersianLlama said:Me too, the only decent books I've read so far in high school are Lord of the Flies and Romeo & Juliet. If you consider Romeo & Juliet a book. Eighth grade we had to read 3 Edgar Allen Poe stories, Fahrenheit 451 and The Martian Chronicles. (And some other stuff I don't remember) We also had to choose a classic to read for a project, I did Frankenstein. English was just amazing that year.crimson5pheonix said:I wish I went to your school...mydogisblue said:. . .Well thats interesting because that just happens to be the next book we are reading.PersianLlama said:Edit: Also, read Animal Farm if you enjoy 1984.
Edit: How could I forget this? We also read Catcher in The Rye has part of our summer assignment this year.

darthzew said:Things Fall Apart was dull until about 3/4 of the way in. The end was good, but not unpredictable. The writing was unique and all, but it's not worth replacing 1984 over.PersianLlama said:Definitely, I loved Catcher in the Rye.darthzew said:I'm reading Catcher in the Rye right now and that one's really good too. It's not dystopian or anything, but still worth a look.
My school used to read it every year in 10th grade, but most of the kids didn't like it, so they stopped and made us read Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. Such a boring book.crimson5pheonix said:Why didn't your school read it? Mine didn't because it was about white people.PersianLlama said:I found To Kill a Mockingbird boring. >_>galletea said:Don't get your hopes up, overhype kills anything. That said 1984 is a fascinating read, and is pretty good. It's not 'To kill a mockingbird' but it is an interesting story.
I second that, and I also had to read it on my own.crimson5pheonix said:If you like it, read Brave New World.
EDIT: I wish we read 1984 in school. I had to read it on my own.
It still is prophetic, that can't be denied.Baby Tea said:This. Great read. And while you could argue, as mentioned in the quote above, that the book has lost some of it's 'prophetic edge', I'd say with today's more 'scary' internet laws and such, it's becoming more of a possibility.
Just read it. It's good.
Nothing except books written for liberal white guilt. If white people didn't feel sorry for ourselves afterwords, we didn't read it. Except for books that only involved non-whites. I try to forget so please don't make me recall the specific books.PersianLlama said:What have you/did you read in high school?crimson5pheonix said:I wish I went to your school.PersianLlama said:Me too, the only decent books I've read so far in high school are Lord of the Flies and Romeo & Juliet. Um, George Orwell was a socialist I believe.harhol said:1984 is nothing but pro-capitalist propaganda.
I would suggest reading Brave New World instead.
Oh well. At least were both pirate supporters.RAKtheUndead said:Ninja'd. Which is strange, because I'm a notable supporter of pirates.PersianLlama said:Um, George Orwell was a socialist I believe.harhol said:1984 is nothing but pro-capitalist propaganda.

Besides The Dark Knight Returns?PedroSteckecilo said:1984 is a pretty good read, though the best part is the analysis of the totalitarian social system that runs Oceania. Still, probably one of best books you'll ever read in a High School English Class.
Seconded Catcher is an amazing book haven't read it fully because in a momant of stupidity lent out the book and doubt i'll get it back.darthzew said:1984 is really good and so is Brave New World. I liked Great Expectations. Not the first time I read it (8th grade) but now that I look back, I think it's a good book.
I'm reading Catcher in the Rye right now and that one's really good too. It's not dystopian or anything, but still worth a look.
mokes310 said:1984 is my favorite book. I was actually thinking about picking it up and reading it again. Probably the only book that I enjoyed reading in high school. Just pray to the gods that you don't have to read A Tale of Two Cities. I'd rather read the dictionary than that piece of garbage!
