WoW's Money Receives Real-World Port

Blizzard is putting out some real-world versions of WoW's in-game currency, but it is neither cheap nor for the Horde.

Stories about World of Warcraft players paying real money for in-game gold are a dime a dozen these days. However, up until now, this has all been virtual cash that people have been buying. All that's about to change, though, since Blizzard is teaming up with DC Comics to put out a physical collection of the game's coinage that is designed to appeal to any hardcore Alliance member.

The coin set was apparently unveiled at Comic-Con, and you'll be able to order them from DC Direct come August 25, provided you're OK shelling out $69.99 for them. According to the site, the coins sound like they're pretty high-quality productions:

The 24 karat gold-plated coin features the Human Military Leader of the Alliance: King Varian Wrynn of Stormwind and measures approximately 1.625" in diameter. The sterling silver-plated coin features the Dwarven King: Magni Bronzebeard of Iron Forge and measures approximately 1.375" in diameter. The copper-plated coin features the Night Elf High Priestess: Tyrande Whisperwind of Silvermoon and measures approximately 1.25" in diameter. All coins are approximately 0.125" thick and are removable from the box. A non-removable commemorative metal plaque with the Alliance emblem is also included.

While $69.99 might sound like a lot to spend on some coins that don't actually have any real-world value, that amount is nothing compared to what serious fans of WoW have bought and sold in the past for in-game gear. Presumably, if this sells well, a similiar Horde-friendly version will hit the market at some point in the future.

(Of course, we all know that High Priestess Tyrande Whisperwind actually hails from Darnassus. Shh, nobody tell DC!)

So blizzard now prints money in order to make money, making that phrase no longer figurative.

Sigh.

So WoW and Glenn Beck now have something in common? They both encourage you to overpay for gold?

Is it bad the main thing that sticks out for me is:

Seriously?

That's directly from the DC Direct site.

[small]so, yeah, she's actually from Darnassus, and not exactly a good friend of the folks in Silvermoon[/small]

Err, Darnassus was created long after Tyrande was born, she is from Suramar.

Sure, the point is, she is not now and never was of Silvermoon, and currently she is from Darnassus. Much like I was physically born in Richland while living in Prosser, moved to Olympia when I was four, moved to Hobbs for college and now I'm from Spokane.

Edit: and was never a fan of folks from... I don't know, Butte, Montana (hypothetically).

That's right, night elf population, you've been put on the copper.

There were plenty of jokes on the official forums about "Gold sales".

Hmm, I wonder if it'll be Sylvannas(Lor'themar, more likely) on horde copper.

There will be a Horde set, too (unless things have changed since this was first announced).

Well...at least these are collector's items. Even at their price, they are still better than That Retarded Horse:

Anyway, while these items clearly weren't made with lore in mind, it's interesting to speculate whether the coins would appear as such in the WarCraft universe proper. While Wrynn and Bronzebeard are kind of obvious choices, I can't imagine them including the images of Tyrande Whisperwind. I mean, the currency probably stems from the human kingdoms, so they are bound to include imagery that is more familiar to traditional members of the Alliance. Someone like Vereesa Windrunner would probably be more appropriate.

Oh well, just some random thoughts. The coins do look nice, though.

Really Blizzard is that how you want to go about looking for more cash to boost the slaes figures?.

First you release WoW and pay to play a month crap that i myself once fell for and still retained repetitive gameplay, secondly you release the expansions at what would usually cost a player a console game, and thirdly you decide since Cataclysm is near its release you expect more players to rush in a pay and then decide to top it off with coins which look nothing like the ones i game and claim they are and slap on a stupid price.

I'm expecting only a few people who play WoW not to fall for this gimmick because its too damn obvious to go for shiny coins whic do not represent the currency in WOW besides the actual colour, and despite that the coin sizes in the game are all the same.
