Arkham Asylum Inmates Escape Into Batman: Arkham City

Batman is back and in deep trouble, with an entire portion of Gotham City now housing Arkham's inmates.

Warner Bros. and Rocksteady Studios have officially announced the title and details for the sequel to 2009 hit Batman: Arkham City [http://www.amazon.com/Batman-Arkham-Asylum-Game-Xbox-360/dp/B003C1I0CO/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1281023417&sr=8-3], Batman has to face thugs and villains in an entire city district.

The title of Arkham City doesn't mean that Gotham City has been taken over by criminals. Arkham City is described as a "maximum security 'home'" for the average thug and criminal mastermind alike set within "the heavily fortified walls of a sprawling district in the heart of Gotham City." So, basically, it sounds like Rocksteady found a way to create a more open-world Arkham Asylum by popping it in a city district. The rent must be super cheap there.

Warner Bros. says the game introduces a "brand-new story" and an "all-star cast of classic characters and murderous villains." Two-Face [http://gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2010/08/05/september-cover-revealed-batman-arkham-city.aspx] and Mr. Freeze, along with a returning Joker, are villains said to be making appearances in the game.

Further details are only whatever we can glean from GI's two Arkham City covers. One shows a freshly punched Batman and a chained up Catwoman, raising the question of whether Batman will have to save her at some point in the game. The other [http://media1.gameinformer.com/imagefeed/featured/warner-bros/batman/arkham2/bat2-1280.jpg] features Catwoman and Batman back-to-back with what appears to be Catwoman's whip wrapped around Batman's arm. Catwoman has always been one of those characters that plays the line between hero and villain, so she may reprise that role in Arkham City.

Batman: Arkham City is currently scheduled for release in Fall 2010

Aww...I was hoping for a full city. Driving the Batmobile from run-down warehouse full of thugs to run-down department store full of thugs would be fun.

Both covers are absolutely amazing. Which only serves to make it more painful that this game is so far away, if reports of Fall 2011 are true. It seems unlikely for it to be out this year when we have so little information.

You know what would be amazing now? If they based the look and design of this district on the Narrows from the Nolan Batman reboot, and so Arkham Asylum could still be a playable location but the entire Narrows island (in the middle of the widest point of the river) would be used for the majority of the game. Cause you know, the Nolan films and the first game do actually have plenty of thematic similarities, using the Narrows as a basis for the district would make perfect sense and be totally awesome to boot...

Usually the sequel introduces multiplay, so Catwoman may be the Alyx Vance of these.

Will not be happy if Harley isn't there though.

And here I was hoping he'd be fighting the horrors of Lovecraft. This should still be a lot of fun though. Or just a completely pointless rehash. Only time will tell really.
Edit: Imagine "You must stop the Joker from summoning Yog Sothoth!" That'd be awesome.

Harley's in the trailer they released a while back, though she might get pushed to the side by some of the other villains so I doubt she'll have as prominent a role as in Arkham Asylum. Still, if the first game is anything to go by, this one will be pretty damn good.

I'm so happy about this game, I loved the first arkham but I do think perhaps they are rushing this game too soon I'd perfer a well done and different game to a rushed clone.

Still, those cover pictures are fantastic.
