Final Fantasy Versus XIII Has Had "Many Difficulties"

Tetsuya Nomura is working hard on Final Fantasy Versus XIII, but there's still going to be a wait before it comes out.

Square Enix's Tetsuya Nomura has indicated that the next titles in the Final Fantasy XIII compilation aren't going to be released for a while. Through the Parasite Eve spinoff The 3rd Birthday's Twitter account, Nomura put just about every other one of his projects in front of them, and said that development on PlayStation 3 exclusive Final Fantasy Versus XIII [http://www.amazon.com/Final-Fantasy-Versus-XIII-Playstation-3/dp/B000ZK9QBY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1281370234&sr=8-1] hasn't been progressing well.

"Versus has had many difficulties," he said. "Past methods of production have been completely inapplicable, but these are the difficulties of birth, so we are working hard. We have a lot to announce, but because we're going in order, I can't say too much yet."

Square Enix's policy is to promote games in order of their release, so he's keeping mum on Versus XIII until it's the game's turn. He did say that navigating Versus's world is "like the 2D [Final Fantasy] games in HD" though. He had previously said that airships [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/99284-Airship-Travel-Returns-in-Final-Fantasy-Versus-XIII] are making a triumphant return in the title.

Nomura also said that Versus XIII and the PSP's Agito XIII won't be shown at this month's Gamescom conference. For now, he's only going to talk about 3rd Birthday, Re:Coded [http://www.amazon.com/Kingdom-Hearts-Re-Coded-Nintendo-DS/dp/B002I08UPC/ref=sr_1_6?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1281370297&sr=1-6], and even titles that haven't been announced yet. He also tweeted: "There are a number of unannounced titles. These will come before Agito and Versus. Some have finished voice recording. Announcements will take place in Japan." Could this mean we'll hearing about them at September's Tokyo Game Show?

As much as I'd like to get on a Final Fantasy airship in Versus XIII soon, it doesn't look like that's going to happen. The titles seem to be buried deep in development secrecy. We'll just have to wait until Versus gets to the point where Square Enix has gotten through all of its "difficulties" so it can finally show off how the game will play.

For me, this is the last chance I'm giving Square-enix to make a final fantasy game. If it sucks then I'm done with final fantasy. I have been a lifelong Final Fantasy fan but from X on up they have been losing me.

FFFFFF.

I want to play this so badly and for it to be on the Xbox 360. I really don't want to go and buy a PS3. So far it looks awesome, especially since its a lot more open than FF13 but don't get me wrong i loved it but it was the linear game i'm guessing for the FF13 compilation. I'm a bit confused as to what he meant by "navigating Versus's world is like the 2D [Final Fantasy] games in HD".

And how come unannounced games are going to be released before announced games? That must mean that Versus is either being a pain to make, is really big/long or both.

I only hope that Airships are not the only things that the sly bugger is bringing from the old titles. So long as it comes out in my Lifetime im alright.

I actually want to play this aspect of FFXIII. Oh well. What was it Miyamoto said? A delayed game is eventually good, but a bad game is bad forever? I'm willing to let them work out the kinks so that they get it right.

Also, wasn't this supposed to be Team Kingdom Hearts practicing on the PS3 before KH3?

I thought FFX was good, its FFX-2 that started the bad FF's for me. Who in the 7 hells wants to watch 3 tarts in short skirts running around speading girl power? besides a select few from the Female Population, not that many...

I didn't think x was too bad, but for me previous ones were better. And yeah x-2, f-ing painful.

Sigh I'm with ya man, loved the old school final fantasy's and with the exception of FF8 i can go back and play any of them anytime. FF13 was the first game in a long time that I played and not just thought that it was bad but also that I was ripped off, I want my $60 back. I'm going to try this game, but I'm borrowing it off someone before i buy it.

Well, I mean, if you ignore the "Girl Power" parts...

Actually, it's ridiculous - the thing that drove me nuts about that game was that the ability tree concepts they used in X2 were interesting and different and hearkened at least somewhat back to Tactics, but they portrayed it in the most emasculating way possible, which even now is tough for me to deal with as a man... and then they packed it full of obnoxious voice acting, a sappy story that I thought was resolved well enough at the end of X, and these pop-song scenes that just... hurt...

Really though... gaining different abilities by changing your clothes? I may not have a problem with trying to attract more female gamers, but not only did the whole scheme bug me, it also felt like it would be demeaning to the average female gamer anyway. It just seems... I dunno, unnecessary and a little sexist.

Here's a thought: Scrap these lame excuses for Kingdom Hearts games and go straight for Versus XIII and afterwards Kingdom Hearts 3.

I hear ya on that one. Honestly, all it would take for me to forgive them is a decent combat engine.

I don't get the hate for X-2

It was fun, light way to re-use the assets from X. The jobs system was a throwback to 6 (or tactics if you want) and that always worked. The fusion summon system was "meh" because you only every had to develop one fusion form.

I'd still take FFX-2's outrageously stupid "Barbie's Angels" gimmick over the "Boring, goes nowhere, but lets copy FFX's mechanics again" setup of their later games.
