BioShock Infinite Takes to the Skies

[gametrailers=702794]

Irrational Games' next title is another BioShock game, but it takes place as far from the ocean as you can get without leaving the planet.

Irrational Games has announced that its secret BioShock [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/102697-Ken-Levine-Confirms-New-Shock-Reveal] game that takes place on massive constructs that float in the sky instead of those sunken on the bottom of the ocean. I know what you're thinking: "So it's BioShock in the air?" Yes, but I wouldn't write the game off so quickly.

BioShock Infinite takes place 58 years before the original BioShock in 1912 on a floating city called Columbia. Though it starts as a symbol of American strength, an international incident exposes Columbia as a "Death Star" armed to the teeth, forcing it to retreat to skies unknown.

Players take on the role of Booker DeWitt, an agent sent to Columbia to rescue a powerful girl named Elizabeth being held prisoner. Players will have more freedom than they did in BioShock's Rapture, able to move around and explore the city of Columbia rather than being stuck within an underwater environment. They will still have to avoid Big Daddy-like enemies, though they're described this time as "a metallic beast with an exposed, beating heart contained in a glass chamber in its chest and a face straight from turn-of-the-century 'strongman' posters."

As you can see in the game's CG trailer, Elizabeth and Booker will have powers that are not unlike plasmids, though Irrational hasn't made a direct connection between BioShock and Infinite other than their names. Talking to Final Fantasy [http://www.1up.com/do/previewPage?cId=3180831]. He said: "The franchise is not just about Rapture. It's a much broader franchise. And not a lot of franchises have the freedom to do that."

Levine also interestingly said that BioShock Infinite will have a more "wild west" feel, so that players walking into a room will not know if the characters inside are going to attack or be friendly (via CVG [http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=259747]). At first glance, BioShock Infinite may seem like the same old game in a new coat of paint, but Irrational is obviously trying to evolve the gameplay while sticking with a franchise that many people enjoyed. A playable demo should be made available at GamesCom next week, though BioShock Infinite isn't expected to be released until 2012.

I still want my BioShock prequel about the fall of Rapture that mixes elements of Prototype, GTA and the original BioShock to make a truly new BioShock game, not just a simple BioShock 1 clone.

It would be about a disgruntled fortune seeker who tries to fight for justice during the rise of Atlas' movement and ultimately the civil war, expanding on the "A man chooses" theme presented in the first game; you either join up with Atlas in the end (when you find out what it's really about) and give in to your anger and bitterness, or you keep true to your idealism and leave his cause.

I'm telling you, it'd be absolutely brilliant.

That being said, this looks pretty fréaking awesome. I'm a sucker for steampunk, and this game seems to delve a lot in it. I'll be keeping my eye on it for sure.

That is amazing looking. It's looks...dare I say...steampunk. I can't wait. Also, the teaser of another underwater Rapture in the beginning was well-placed.

This. Whilst this game looks amazing, I'd still rather know about bioshock as it was being build. Still, Infinite looks extremely good, and who knows, they may have another studio making that prequel...please?

Wow, color me impressed and in anticipation! I especially like that it's not going to be just Bioshock 1&2 in the sky with the exact same formula. Familiarity with a twist seems quite pleasant.

So they went to Turn of the Century Steampunk, eh?

Actually if you look at the original Bioshock design docs, Bioshock Infinite is actually a remake of the original but abandoned concepts they wanted for Bioshock. An open world where not everyone was hostile to you but possibly was, as well as the story being about rescuing a powerful heiress.

... So bioshock has changed hands again, and now we get something even less in line with the original. "Okay, oaky... we saw bioshock 2 kinda tanked, so we're going to make it better. We're going to make it in... THE SKY! YES! You are also, instead of being a (twist not withstanding) normal guy thrust into the entire situation, a secret agent! Fuck yea!!"

They, seriously, need to just stop calling them "bioshock." If not for that name, I'd have expectations more in line with the generic shooter this looks like it'll be.

Also, big Daddies were a big step away from the whole 'SUPER SOLDIER WITH EXPOSED PULSATING INTERNAL ORGAN WEAK SPOT.' Thats a big reason they were so impressive. Early on, you NEEDED to avoid them. There were no tricks or gimmicks to killing them. They would literally fuck you up if you so much as got near a little sister. It did well to establish they were serious and killing one was pretty much an honor. Then they introduce the whole "research" bullshit and the game pretty much started going tits up from there. But at least the story didn't completely shit itself and die until you were deus ex machina'd out of the original confines of the twist so you could fight the guy from the cover of atlas shrugged.

Huh... This looks good, but all this tech that American seams to have lieing around for the last 58 years makes a lot of plot holes for the rest of the Bioshock series unable to explain, like why does everybody still have the "normal" tech of the 1940's when we were capable of making FLYING CITIES without adam, or why didn't Andrew Ryan mention the thing once? If it was kept secret... SOMEHOW (which it isn't), wouldn't he be the guy to find out about it no matter what for the construction of his own city away from the ground?

Nice, i hope they do clearly link it to Bioshock though, maybe it inspires Ryan. i just dont want them to use the IP to generate sales, hopefully it will be lighter in mood, because the original scared me to much, lol

Raptures fall is, to some extent, covered in bioshock 2 multiplayer. But i would want to see what you described come into a game.

OT: looks great but whats with the american flags? And nobody looks up to see the floating air city? Dont they ever need to set down to refuel or restock on supplies?
But thats just me nitpicking.
