Juno
<img height=400>http://i52.tinypic.com/be81s1.jpg

Hold on for a second here...Juno was supposed to be a comedy? Just browsing around the internet, as well as from conversations with a few people, that's the kind of vibe I'm getting here. Really? I guess I'll have to say that Juno fails its genre then, because I did not see any comedy within this film at all. The situations weren't funny, you didn't care all that much about the characters, and nothing much happens that would be of any comedic value.

[Img_Inline width="275" Caption="'So, like, dude, I'm pregnant'" Align="left"]http://i53.tinypic.com/5lqv4m.jpg[/Img_Inline]

With that said, let's change the genre around to a pure drama. In this regard, it manages to be a decent film. It has deep, interesting characters, and tells an easy to follow story. It doesn't do quite so well in having an emotional impact on the viewer. This, I feel, is key to a great drama film. You can have a good one without that emotional connection, but in order to become great, something Juno isn't, it must be there.

It opens up well, with a creative, rotoscoped title sequence that seems like a lot of time was put into it. In fact, a lot of time was put into them. The title screen itself was put together in the timeframe of around 7-8 months. I'll call that dedication, and it shows that the people who made this movie did care about it. Unfortunately, as the story progresses, the film degrades in quality.

This may be due to the fact that I had heard nothing but praise for this film before I watched it, or maybe because of the opening title credits looking so great, but Juno did disappoint me once we actually begin to see what it has to offer us. Juno MacGuff (Ellen Page) has gotten herself into a bit of a predicament; she's pregnant. The father is Paulie Bleeker (Michael Cera), but he doesn't want anything to do with the child. Juno decides that the best idea would be to abort the child, but soon decides against that. She finds a couple (Jason Bateman and Jennifer Garner) who are willing to adopt the child, and they draw up preliminary papers. The rest of the film details the remaining few months before the delivery. The one twist that the film presents doesn't even have any impact on the final result of the film.

Juno's parent's don't do anything wrong in this story, and actually end up being very supportive of their "irresponsible daughter". The pregnancy didn't seem to have much emotional impact on them, and it doesn't change the relationship between them and Juno. Juno's seemingly singular friend (Olivia Thirlby) doesn't seem to be bothered by this event either, and stays with Juno throughout the film. The only relationship that seems to be greatly affected by the pregnancy is the one between Juno and her schoolmates. This is only touched on briefly, through short dialogue interactions, and never seems to be all that troubling to our lead character.

Juno is a strong lead character, that's certain. She's clever, intelligent and well-rounded, (in her personality, I'd like to stress). The thing is, despite the fact that you are supposed to care for her and her situation, you won't. She isn't a character you'll end up liking, because she doesn't treat anyone else well. She's sarcastic, insulting or apathetic towards everyone else, including her family. You know, that same family who has been supportive towards her for the entire time. She doesn't have any actions, save for one at the end of the film, that will make you want to root for her, and you quickly become aware that putting the baby up for adoption is the best solution. Had Juno needed to be a parent, I would have felt sorry for the child more than for its mother, just because of how she acts throughout the film.

That's not to say that Ellen Page's performance of her character wasn't great, because it was. In fact, none of the actors in this film did a poor job in their roles. They all played them as you would expect them to be played, and nobody did a bad job. While a couple of the characters will get on your nerves, it's more due to the fact of how they're written, than how they are acted.

[Img_Inline width="275" height="177" Caption="Is smoking a good idea at this point?" Align="right"]http://i55.tinypic.com/o6z3bl.jpg[/Img_Inline]

As I was watching Juno, I was often wondering how closely the actors were following the script. I kept wondering whether or not the constant use of the phrase "you know" was part of the script, or if the script was too hard to follow, so the actors had to use improvisation a lot of the time. Thankfully, a copy of the screenplay came with my copy of the DVD, and I was able to find out. The verdict: Yes, that particular phrase is in the script. That was quite annoying for me, and it really stood out while watching it. The rest of the dialogue, while it didn't come off as forced, it didn't seem as "real" as I had believed it would be going in. Maybe this is another result of something being way overhyped for me before watching, but it didn't impress me like I thought it would.

Sadly, Juno disappointed me. It's not a bad film, and ends up being passable entertainment, but it doesn't have the emotional connection that is required of a great drama film. It certainly wasn't funny enough to rely on being a comedy, so drama seems to be all it has going for it. It has good actors playing interesting characters, but the character of Juno was far more unlikable than she needed to be in order for the audience to feel any sympathy for her. The story is easy to follow, thankfully, and while some of the dialogue did get annoying, it was a fairly well written piece. It's not a great film, but it works as a decent drama about teenage pregnancy.

This is one of my family's favourite movies. I'm a big fan of Ellen Page, have been since Hard Candy. Though I disagreed with you, I still enjoyed your review.

Glad you liked it. I figured it was going to be funny. :)
Is this referring to her small chest? If so, it's not funny, at all.

I enjoyed the film, but my expectations exceeded the actual experience. Perhaps I'll watch it aga-... no, I don't think I will. It wasn't a bad film, as you said, but nothing that really made it stand out as a comedy or a drama film.

I didn't notice any grammatical errors, and overall another solid review to add to your ever-expanding list Marter.

No!

I was saying trying to state that I wasn't taking a shot at her for getting pregnant.

Well, usually I agree with you... but this time I won't.

Juno is a favourite of mine, and I ended up laughing hysterically at the movie... and I don't laugh easy.

As always, well presented, well written and nice tone. Even when you don't like a movie, you do manage a fair presentation, so... well done!

I kind of figured I was wrong with that one. I blame lack of sleep, and it being extremely early in the morning. Okay, good! It was funny after all. :)

This did not happen I say!

"you didn't care all that much about the characters" "it has deep, interesting characters"

So when its turned to a drama, you suddenly start to care about the characters? Or do you still not care but it isnt important in a drama?
I personally think it is a quite great comedy, it has a lot of humour in it, there are no brutal "i beat you with slapstick and vulgarity till you laugh" scenes, there is this believable little everyday humour everywhere, little bits and pieces and phrases, that are just charmingly a wee bit out of mood, mixed up with the lovely sarcastic protagonist and some unexpected personalities accompanying her, it makes a pretty fun watch.

>did you get a soundtrack CD too? Its nothing i would call "my taste of music" but it followed me for weeks. Good choices there.

I stick by what I said on both accounts. And it isn't all the characters that I didn't care about. I felt for the situation that Vanessa was in, even though she's not on the screen that much. She is a sympathetic character.

The character I was mostly referring to was Juno herself. Her character makes no attempt to endear herself to the audience, and comes off as extremely unlikable. She doesn't really have any "redeeming" qualities, save for what she is doing for Vanessa. Her general attitude and actions all make me dislike her.

And genre doesn't really have anything to do with it, although characters are usually far more important in a drama. A good comedy can work without being character focussed, and instead just feature insane situations.

No, I didn't. The DVD version I got came with 2-discs, one is a digital copy, and the script.

I thought the film was good. It manages to finish on a good note that makes you smile every time. Therefore, it can succeed as a "feel-good" film. The comedy was small. This results in characters that doesn't look too serious.

My only big bad point of the movie was the soundtrack. Yes, it fits with the film. However, the songs are not the best thing to listen to with an Ipod or in your car. They tend to be "that" annoying song that stays in your head.

It was a well written review, but tell us: why should we pay attention to your reviews? There are a billion reviewers out there already. What can you offer that makes you more worthy of our time?

I'm not trying to be rude, I just think that there is an oversatuaration of reviewers on the net, and for anyone of them to hope to get a following, they need to have some kind of hook or approach that makes them unique.

The thing I liked about Juno was that it doesn't have a massive tragedy strike or some twist to the plot. It tries to tell a comparitively realistic story the way most Hollywood drama's and, in fact, soap operas are entirely unable to do. Any other film, and you'd have car crashes, miscarriages, statutory rape, post-natal depression and probably teen drug use all being thrown into the mix to create a giant explosion of drama. Juno handled everything maturely, and went for emotional impact instead of dramatic.

The dialogue is one thing that's wrong with the film. I often cringe when I hear the teens talk, as it often seems forced. But then again, I'm 24 and Scottish so have no idea how American teens talk these days. For all I know it could be littered with pop. culture references, possibly-ironic slang and retarded flavouring particles (such as "like" and "y'know"). But I know people who loved the dialogue, so it must be a matter of taste.

Ultimately this movie was built up wayyyy too high after the Oscar win. It became an overnight indie darling which everyone expected to go in and love which only ever create impossible expectations or (indie) resentment (either hating it because it became popular or just because).

Your review was good and well-balanced though, although I find it weird you found no comedy in the film. Definitely not pure comedy, but there are a few good lines in there. Hey, at least the music is good if indie rock is your thing.

Couldn't have said it better.

I laughed at Juno, quite a bit in fact, but I can see where your gripes can be. I do disagree with you but I appreciate the way you present your arguments.

Why are you in the User Reviews section? I mean, surely you wouldn't notice this oversaturation so much if you weren't hanging around areas like this?
I was talking about the internet in general, and not just the reviewer section of the escapist. I'm sure every reviewer at least hopes somewhere in the back of their imagination that they will find a large audience. I was only offering some advice to make that possible; it wasn't necessarily just for him - it is aimed at any aspiring critic, of which there may be many in this section of the forums.

...no, he doesn't need a unique hook or approach. If you have to rely on gimmicks to get people to read your reviews, you're probably not a good reviewer.
Practically every popular reviewer on the internet has somekind of gimmick to hook the viewers and mark them out as unique. Here are a few examples:
That Guy With The Glasses. His trick is to review crappy, nostalgic old movies. It works because it brings back our childhood memories, and offers amusing, in-depth critiquea on the kind of movies no one considers anymore.
Yahtzee. His whole, spartan presentation is radically different from most reviewers, and his mentality to video games is so unforgiving, it seperates him from all those 7-9/10 reviewers at most other gaming sites.
Confused Matthew stands out because of his tactic of challenging people over why they think movies are good.
Mr. Plinket provides a parody of the youtube reviewer, all the while blending his review with his own, bizarre life story.

These guys all have realised that to stand out, you need to do things differently. Note that on That Guy With The Glasses website, there are a whole bunch of other reviewers who's output is of varying quality and popularity. You'll find that the more popular ones tend to be the more unusual in terms of subject, format and approach.

This kind of thing doesn't just apply to reviews either. If you want to sell a book or a movie script to publishers/agents, your work will have a much greater chance of being accepted if they can see a big hook to your story. That is what captivates an audience.

I understand that people might just post on here with no intention or expectation to become famous, successful critics, but I can still offer advice for you to take or leave.

Well, I don't know why you should care, to be honest.

I don't review for other people, I'll be honest. I review, strictly speaking, for myself. Yes, I do like it when people read and comment on these things, and it warms my heart to hear that I've done a good job or convinced someone to watch a film they otherwise would have avoided. I do enjoy that.

But the thing is, at the end of the day, I am in this for myself. I started writing review due to my already failing memory. I am writing them, so that in a month or two from now, I can read these and remember why I liked/dislike a certain film. That's the main reason behind writing these reviews. Yes, it is purely selfish.

However, people seem to like them, for the most part anyway. I created my user group because people seemed to like them. The group has grown to 35 members plus me as of writing this, and to me, that means I'm doing something right. At this point, some people do seem to care what I think about certain movies, and this make me feel good.

And, like I said, if I manage to sway someone's opinion as to whether or not they should watch a certain film, then that is a bonus to me.

If you don't like them, no reason for you to read them. Like you said, there are a "billion" other reviewers out there. I don't have a gimmick, save for not giving a rat's ass about what those other billion reviews think. I write what I personally thought about the movie, and I don't care if every other critic out there disagrees with that opinion.

I'll also state that I have absolutely no intention of becoming a film critic for a living. While that would be an excellent job, and one I certainly wouldn't pass up, it isn't a goal of mine. This is a hobby, one that helps my own memory, as well as allowing me to learn about films. I am enjoying myself, and therefore will continue writing these reviews.

I hope that was sufficient enough. Any more questions for me?

Nice review Marter.

There is not a single word I can use to describe my opinion of Juno. I can't enthusiastically say that I liked it, but I defiantly didn't dislike it.
There were only two parts in the movie that made me laugh. But yet I do think it was worth seeing. I dunno...Maybe it was what you said, perhaps it was Juno's personality that made it difficult for me to feel anything really for her. :/
