WALL-E
http://i69.servimg.com/u/f69/16/09/70/40/poster38.png
If you do not enjoy the first 30 minutes of WALL-E, stick with it, because there's a good chance that you'll enjoy it once the story actually picks up. If you like Pixar films, this will almost certainly be the case. If you do like the first 30 minutes -- moments completely and utterly devoid of dialogue, watching a robot go about his business attempting to clean an already abandoned Earth -- then you might end up finding yourself bored when the real story kicks in. Not necessarily, but it's a big change from the first third, and for me, far less enjoyable.
[Img_Inline width="275" height="177" Caption="I want one." Align="left"]http://i69.servimg.com/u/f69/16/09/70/40/wall-e10.jpg[/Img_Inline]
The first portion of the film involves a little robot names WALL-E (Waste Allocation Load Lifter - Earth Class) attempting to clean up the Earth. He's akin to a trash compactor, gathering up bits of debris and piling them into squares. He stacks them on top of one another, creating buildings, and later, entire cities. There's something amazing about watching him do this too. There is no dialogue presented, just the face of one sad little robot. And WALL-E collects things too; he gathers up little keepsakes from the piles of trash, taking them back to the shelter he calls a home during the night.
At one point, he takes home a little sapling -- the first "living" thing that's been on Earth in years. This prompts another robot, EVE (Extraterrestrial Vegetation Evaluator), to come down to Earth and do its job: See if the plant is actually a plant, and if it is deemed to be one, take it back to a human ship. Yes, humans are still alive, with the population seemingly existing on a single, luxurious cruise ship somewhere out in space.
But the humans of this ship are obese ones, having lived with the ship's luxuries for hundreds of years. They don't even walk; the live in an automated chair that takes them everywhere. Is this a statement about the way obesity numbers are increasing on Earth nowadays? Probably. What I don't get is the overall plan of these people, and why they believe that a single plant means they should come back to Earth.
[Img_Inline width="275" height="189" Caption="EVE gets a blaster for...some reason." Align="right"]http://i69.servimg.com/u/f69/16/09/70/40/wall_e10.jpg[/Img_Inline]
That is the idea though. EVE eventually brings the plant back to the ship, and the captain reveals that they needed a plant like that in order to go back home. I guess they needed proof that things could survive in order to go back. The thing is, this isn't a smart idea. There are no resources left on Earth for them to gather, nowhere to live in, and since they've never had to do work in their lives, (the captain can hardly even walk when given the chance), there is little chance of sustaining life.
Then we go back to the robots, who get to have some sort of love story. They actually get some slight dialogue, with EVE being allowed to say "WALL-E" and WALL-E able to say "EVA". That's as far as they come to speaking properly, but they don't need to. Their story, not the one of the humans, is what we want to see. Their characterization is built almost solely on body language, and it works. We care about both robots, far more than the humans, and we want to see them live happily ever after.
Scattered throughout the film are bits of humor, mostly coming from the other robots we meet. One running gag that I enjoyed was one where a robot on the ship continually detects "foreign contaminants", and leaves his track in order to clean them. This usually involves him crossing paths with either WALL-E or EVE, and often ends up being funny. Other fun bits involve robots not understanding human life, and the rather large humans acting like, well, large humans. There's a lot of self-deprecating shots taken at our race here, most of them coming from the point of view of the robots.
[Img_Inline width="275" height="200" Caption="Look at those eyes. LOOK AT THEM!" Align="left"]http://i69.servimg.com/u/f69/16/09/70/40/walle010.jpg[/Img_Inline]
As with most Pixar films, WALL-E looks great. If there was a film to show off how great animated films can look, it's probably this one. Sony used it to market how amazing Blu-ray can look, and there is good reason for that choice. But good visuals can't always help a lackluster and sometimes boring story. Especially when the ending felt forced and comes from a completely different place from the rest of the film.
If you don't want to know anything about the ending, skip the remainder of this paragraph. I'm not going to spoil it, but I'm going to give away the essence of the ending. I didn't like the way WALL-E ends. Not because it's a bad ending, but because it's completely different -- that is, it's happy -- from the rest of the film. Most of the film shows the future as bleak, while the ending gives us a feeling of hope, something not there at all for most of the film. It comes out of left field, and seems to be there only to make sure none of the children watching the film are sad after it concludes.
One can't label me a large fan of WALL-E, but I'm not going to say that you won't enjoy the film. There are good things at play here, and there are certainly parts that are enjoyable. The change of tone from the first third wasn't something I appreciated, and the ending actually left me with more questions than answers. WALL-E and EVE are good characters, and I would have liked the story to focus more on them than the obese humans. The robots actually have more soul and depth than the people do, and since they're the stars of the film, giving us more of them would seem to be a smarter idea. I'm not going to say you should pass on WALL-E, but, for the most part, it wasn't my cup of tea.

WALL-E
http://i69.servimg.com/u/f69/16/09/70/40/poster38.png
